  • After having some issues with the main generator on my 50 amp class A motorhome, I borrowed these two inverter style generators for a trip and was actually quite impressed with them.

    The dual fuel version of those 3400 Champions is a sweet unit, I have never and hopefully will never put gas in mine. Propane for life.

      Just out of curiosity, how long will a gen set like that run on a 30 gallon propane tank? I've considered that option as well...

      Champion claims 14.5 hours at %25 load while using a 20lb tank. Longest I've ever run mine was 4 hours at %25-%50 load while charging a manlift and running a corded drill. At 50% load with a 30lb tank, I'd expect it to last somewhere around 10-12 hours.

    TBH I would just take off the seal on the bearing and repack it from there. Not the proper fix but I've had that last a long time.

      I considered doing that. I think in this case though I'm glad I replaced it. The generator repair shop I had replace it showed me the old bearing once it was off and I'm glad I just replaced it. The bearing was pretty bad.

    I had a Champion generator for years it was great. My dad has the Predator inverter it’s super quiet but very temperamental. I wouldn’t run the A/C and microwave at the same time.

      Even with the on board 7500 watt diesel generator I try to avoid running the electric water heater and / or the microwave when both A/C units are running.

    I bet a lot of people who have travel trailers or fith weels use these because most of those don't have a built in generator.
    my dad has a fithwheel that does have the generator built in.
    and also, I just wanted to say how much I love your RV videos. keep them up!

    There's a guy on UA-cam called "
    James Condon" who does lots of generator repairs. not sure how far you are from each other but would be an interesting vid.

      Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up having a local generator repair shop fix it for me before I went on a trip, but with my luck with this generator it will need more repairs soon lol so I might check him out.

    I was starting to think you dropped off like many others have, glad to see you're still chugging along.... IMO eco mode slows the gensets down for fuel consumption and noise levels, turning eco off allows it to run full out like a standard genset.

    Did you try packing the old bearing with grease? You could stick a needle in it for temporary use also those are nice generators

    That joint box has nothing in it. The inverters inside the genarator can sync with incoming sinewave so the box is basically just like if u make a Y harness with two plugs joined together line to line and neutral to neutral. U don't even need that parallel kit to use this parallel feature. U can use any inverter generator with another inverter generator in parallel.

    Do you think you could make a custom exhaust system for the two generators and put them in the same compartment and just hard wire them like that? Might need electric start tho, or do you think the repair on the main gen is easy it's just inconvenient right now.
    But the diesel gen probally has better efficency.

      I'm sure a custom exhaust would be possible, but I went ahead and repaired the main generator as it is much more efficient and runs off the on board 100 gallon diesel fuel tank.

      @@DanielJaegerFilms that's fair. How does the onboard generator vent? It seems very quiet for what it is but I doubt it taps into the actual exhaust pipe. Does it have a muffler and a straight dump or does it vent out the side?

      It looks simple enough. If I had some experience replacing one before I'd feel more confident in doing it myself, but I ended up having a generator shop replace it for me.

    This doesnt have nothing to do with this video but great videos. I just seen your quadrasteer video I have a 2003 1500hd silverado 4x4 quadrasteer There is one guy in carolina i think that can rebuild that sensor for half the price he really knows those trucks he rebuild mine

      If I did the job I most certainly would have, but I ended up having a generator repair shop fix it because I didn't have the tools for it and quite honestly, wasn't comfortable working on that part of the generator yet. If I had a similar one to practice on first it would be a different story.

    Chose Champion generators are cheap China junk. Sure, they'll work for a while. If you want trouble free reliability for decades then Honda is the way to go.

      Not much different. Honda's small inverter generators now come from Thailand, and open-frames come from China. At least Yamaha has some Japanese production, and their larger engines were from a US company (Robin, which became Subaru Robin, which was purchased by Yamaha).

      @@straightpipediesel That's what people say until they own a Honda. There is no comparison in the longevity and reliability.

      Yeah I've heard mixed reviews on them as well as Generac (heard some people call them Generjunk lol) but you're right about the Hondas. My dad has one for his RV and there's a huge difference in the build quality.
