I have just bought this camera and this walkthrough has saved me hours of wading through the manual and still wondering what was what. Thank you so much for this much needed explication. Superb. I love the camera and the images it gets this is just the icing on the cake.
Just bought my very own PXW-X70 and was about to trudge through the menus and see what they're all about. Ran across your video. Glad I did. Very helpful intro. Much appreciate your time in producing this!
For those looking for an incredible easy way to manual white balance your Sony PXW-X70 by using an assigned button push please read: Please go to your menu, others, assign button, choose assign 3 (the picture profile button since it's right next door to WHT BAL), choose WB set. Go to camera's manual / auto mode next to EVF & make sure you're in MANUAL, find a white surface, hit WHT BAL, choose A or B with scroll wheel next to your menu button, then hit button 3 (picture profile) while in the white and bingo, you're manually white balanced. The lambs have stopped screaming.
amazing video!! thanks i would like to know if you have any other longer video like this explaining in depth when to use each function etc, i would like to use this camera to the fullest
All the videos I have on it are on the channel, there are no others, sorry. I would expect someone buying this level of camcorder to already know when to use the functions, as it's a pro piece of kit.
Thanks for the video! BTW Excellent explanation of the 3 SteadyShot options and other settings. Got me up and running quickly without having to open that owners manual :)
I have struggled desperately with the White Balance settings, thank you for that clear and concise explanation. I also realized that the PXW-X70 is quite versatile. Do you plan on doing a review of the PXW-X80 and X90?
Awesome vid. I just bought one. Have u found a need to tweak any color profiles? Or prefer a supplied preset? I'll be curious to see how it goes with led lighting Cheers
***** Yes, I've played with the profiles in part to try to tame the highlights. I'm not the world's greatest expert on all the tiny fine details but there's some excellent info on the DVInfo.net forum - take a look at www.dvinfo.net/forum/sony-pxw-x70-fdr-ax100/524300-sony-pxw-x70-announced-pro-xdcam-version-ax100-30.html#post1868584
Thought I'd peruse my menu settings, excellent video. Wish I had some biscuits, but I did have some Panda Express Chicken and greens. Great Covid video!!
Nice vid. Do you reckon the newly announced PXW-z150 will have the same type of menu with similar features? I'm wondering because if the X70 has some very nice options in Camera Set including color mode, gamma, knee and others, then the Z150 should have these, and possibly more, as well.
Hi sir i am now using sony nx 1 camcorder for live stream and it gives me very good output but Am thinking to buy an pxw x70 soo pxw x70 can give the same result for live stream outputs like nx 1
I don't recall offhand but at a guess, it would automatically use a slower shutter speed in darker, dimmer environments where it cannot raise the gain or open the iris to compensate. Would likely result in blurry motion though.
Thanks this was really helpful. I have PXW-X70 and I recently purchased an i7 MacBook Pro. I have found that downloaded footage on playback through my i7 is juddering on slow pans and I have been trying to resolve the problem. I never had this problem on my 27 in Mac. I am looking at settings in my PXW and wondering if it's the problem with my settings, my camera, camera cards or Mac. I am using Final Cut Pro X. If you have any thoughts I would welcome a solution. Also, how did you record the menu on the PXW to post?
I think I just pointed another camcorder at the screen. Check whether the same piece of footage (exact same file) plays smoothly on the old Mac if it judders on the new one, that way we can eliminate the footage as the issue.
UKAirscape Thanks for your response and help. My old Mac was donated for parts, so not an option now. Amazing clarity filming off your screen without getting screen image distortion. Nice work.
Just got this cam and was following your tutorial and all of a sudden my WB Set is grayed out....never really saw the "A&B" setting, just 'indoor-outdoor-manual'...any advice?
Could you please make a walkthrough of the v2 update. Mainly the streaming and ftp function. For example: How to use ur Sony PXW-X70 for Livestreaming with UA-cam. Step by Step. (or is there such or similar video). Thank you so much. :)
Unfortunately I can't because I only had the camera on loan from Sony and it went back to them a long time ago, sorry. I'll ask their PR team if I can borrow it again maybe.
Why might the AUTO MODE SET option be greyed out. Whether I set the switch on the back of the camera to auto or manual AMS remains greyed out. This camera is setup for 4k 100mbs. X-70
Unfortunately I don't know. It's a couple of years since I had the camera on loan. I can only unhelpfully suggest you have a read of the manual, sorry :-(
Hi I bought this camcorder ... quick question ... I'm getting a judder on my panning shots... that I only notice after I load to final cut pro x .... any idea why this is? thanks Barry.
Hard to say without seeing but pans can often look juddery, esp if you shoot 24p (are you?) or if the stabiliser is still switched on as it will "fight you" as you pan.
Thanks for getting back, yeah I've been shooting 25p so that might be it.... only really getting to grips with the camera so I'll keep playing with it....thanks again... finding your walkthrough video very helpful, Barry.
I know I am going to get a lot of flack from everyone on this question. Dose this have the option to record in 4:3 Standard Definition? I still have a need for this.
I believe (I could be wrong!) that no modern HD camcorder will do this as the HD standard is 16x9. Your option is probably just to crop during editing to a 4x3 aspect.
I was looking at the Sony manual, it says don't use nightshot during bright day light, as it can damage the camera! would this still be the case if someone put an IR filter on the front lense ? I have see quite a lot of guys doing this on youtube, using nightshot turned on, but with an IR filter on the front. so, which is it, any ideas ? I suppose the IR filter should protect the camera from the intense light. ummmm.
Norm Vigas OK, so what you mean is an IR-pass filter ie a filter than only permits IR to pass through, rather than what I took you to mean which was a filter that cuts IR (like a UV filter would which would be more conventional on a camcorder). In theory, using an IR-pass filter to block all visible light entering the camcorder would enable you to switch into nightshot mode but you'd need to be sure your filter was up to the job. Meanwhile, having watched those videos you linked to I think their author(s) would be far better investing in a decent tripod...
I agree about the tripod addition hahah I would like to think this new type tech in camcorders will help a little steady shot, slow motion and alike. But this filter side of things I admit is a bit gray for me, I have ordered a filter for the camcorder a 52 mm 950nm 950 Infrared IR Pass Filter, or have I got this wrong again. Sorry to be a pain here, just needing a few pointers as it were, from someone who knows far more than me, hahah.
UKAirscape I have to check the manual it seem many things get disable when i use 4k. thank you for your quick response. if you want to make some collaboration some day please let me know ;-) (so we promote each other channel)
Yes, I think the processing becomes too much for the CPU to handle when it's trying to compress 4K so it has to give up on other functions. I didn't get to try 4K when I did that review because they hadn't released the software at that time. Collaboration sounds good, not sure how we'd work that technically...?
UKAirscape I have a tech channel about computers so i was thinking I can make an interview with tips about cameras etc to make youtube videos and you may do the same about my skills ;-)
UKAirscape other question do you think i loose quality when i record with the SD card instead recording for instance RAW or less compress format in my hyper deck
Yogesh, you have not enabled "replies" on your account (in the Google+ settings) so I can't directly reply to your comment so I hope you see this. I did not try the DV mode but it would be extraordinary if it couldn't. All UK DV was 16x9 for years before the switch to HD...
Really? Thats neat, american tv was 4:3 pretty much right up to the HD switch! Also i looked at these videos and this menu list, really has sold me on this camera, I just got the rx10 mark 2 but i want my pro video features back! Sounds like its a pretty good camera, like a rx10 in a professional body.
This camera seems to have a manufacturing fault. I bought one about 8 months ago in London from JigSaw. I have used only a few times since then. I am not very happy with the auto focus and steady shot functions. And since yesterday when I took the camera out of its bag, I've been getting an error message E62:10. I have searched the Internet and found out that this is a common problem with the lens of this camera. I am in Istanbul now and I don't think they can fix it here. I paid 1,700 British pounds. I am very sad about it.
+Karl Ertunc It should be under a 2 year Sony Prime warranty which a local Sony dealer should be able to sort for you even if you're in Istanbul. The camcorder may have to be sent away for repair of course.

Hi there,
my company is buying me the PXW-X70 (what a name !) for Christmas. So I find your work very very useful ! Thanks for sharing !
Thank you! Enjoy the camcorder.

Just got a Sony NX80 and the menu is almost identical. Sooo this was quite helpful. Thank you very well done ...
Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful sir.
Many thanks for taking the time to do this, very informative and helpful.
Thank you for this great clip!
amazing video!! thanks

UKAirscape i had a panasonic hc-wx970 and i had to jump in something superior i make youtube videos and i wanted something good
Thanks for the video! BTW Excellent explanation of the 3 SteadyShot options and other settings.
Got me up and running quickly without having to open that owners manual :)
I'm very pleased to hear that!
Awesome, the focus display how can I keep it on the screen and after that it disappears
Well done and thank you for your time to make the video. God Bless you!
Good night, do you know how do I set the camera's Stabilizer mode? Thank you very much.
Very good and helpful. Easy to understand and no bull
s $@t.
How do I turn on Night Shot after its turned on within the menu?? Cannot figure this out!
1000 youtubers could really learn something here !!
I have the z90 and Auto Mode Set is greyed out. Don't know how to access it
When I assign the white balance to any assign it doesn't work any tips for solving this
hey there very helpful video. Thanks.
I needed to know how to adjust the shutter speed on that camera??
super useful!! thank you so much !!
excellent, thank you, what about the physical buttons and controls on the camera? Have you done a video on that?
If it's not on my channel, then I didn't. I don't recall doing one.
I really like this camera and planning to buy. Can we record in dv format in 16:9 aspect ratio?
I have struggled desperately with the White Balance settings, thank you for that clear and concise explanation. I also realized that the PXW-X70 is quite versatile. Do you plan on doing a review of the PXW-X80 and X90?
I wish I could but Sony's PR company haven't responded to my request for a loan unit and I'm too broke to buy one myself, unfortunately :-(
OK, but thanks again for explaining the custom White Balance procedure, I always had to default back to Auto White Bal.
Awesome vid. I just bought one. Have u found a need to tweak any color profiles? Or prefer a supplied preset? I'll be curious to see how it goes with led lighting
Cheers

Awesome walkthrough. Thanks heaps.
Nice tutorial! I'm trying to figure out why most of my camera settings such as WB are greyed out. Much more than what you had greyed out.
Hmm, they shouldn't be. You haven't left the camera in Auto by accident..?
@@UKAirscape I figured it out. I had a button set to auto. When I switched it to manual those menu items became available.
Please how do you clear the record status on Sony PXW-X70 when used for a livefeed video
Z90sony ki sating batayo plese sir
SUPER COOL
Thought I'd peruse my menu settings, excellent video. Wish I had some biscuits, but I did have some Panda Express Chicken and greens. Great Covid video!!
The one question I had was about timecode and if the camera can hard code it onto video in 60i mode and you skipped the timecode section :/
I have the same issue, can anybody direct me to somewhere useful?
Nice vid. Do you reckon the newly announced PXW-z150 will have the same type of menu with similar features? I'm wondering because if the X70 has some very nice options in Camera Set including color mode, gamma, knee and others, then the Z150 should have these, and possibly more, as well.
+Jason Johnston (Jason R. Johnston) Yes, pretty certain. The Z150 appears to just be an NX100 with 4K and the NX100 has a similar menu set to the X70.
Hi sir i am now using sony nx 1 camcorder for live stream and it gives me very good output but Am thinking to buy an pxw x70 soo pxw x70 can give the same result for live stream outputs like nx 1
Does it output 50p (at 1080) out of the SDI? The manual doesn’t say.
No idea, sorry
Thanks anyway
Thank you very much for making this! Just a quick question: what does the 'auto slow shutter' at 6:20 do?
I don't recall offhand but at a guess, it would automatically use a slower shutter speed in darker, dimmer environments where it cannot raise the gain or open the iris to compensate. Would likely result in blurry motion though.

Someone just lent me one of these, very helpful thanks!!
Do you have a tutorial on Picture Profile or have you seen a good one?
Sorry, I don't. You will find good (written) info on the X70 forum at dvinfo.net though, there was a huge discussion about the subject.
I can NOT get into the WB menus, do you know why?
You'll need to describe a bit more what happens when you try.
