H/H match update and preview of the week ahead: ... This is now week 229 of our favorite classic game show (the show ends with week 291 and episode number 1455). These episodes were taped on December 10, 1977, and originally aired in late January of 1978 (Jan. 23-27). Our stalwart regulars are all in their places with bright, shiny faces, and once again they're joined by two familiar faces and another MG newcomer: ~~~Semi-regular Betty White sticks around for a second week, her 58th now (of 75). Betty's excellent 50.0% track record is the best there is on this week's panel, but will that be enough to entice anyone to call on her for a H/H question? It wasn't last week. ~~~Debralee Scott returns for her 6th week (of 10 total). Debralee last filled in some blanks back in episodes 1061-1065, and in her 25 shows so far, she has yet to be chosen to answer a single head-to-head question. ~~~Last but not least, Joe Garagiola is now the latest one-and-done "Match Game '7x" celeb. Last week King Richard was the unanimous choice for the H/H, playing all six questions (matching twice). Reviewing the past 83 weeks, Richard has played *356* times. Everyone else combined played *54* times. (Charles had 17 opportunities, Brett 13, Fannie 13, Betty 3, Lynn Deerfield 1, Gary Burghoff 1, Rosemary Forsyth 1, Nipsey Russell 1, Meg Bennett 1, Scoey Mitchell 1, Trish Stewart 1, and Marcia Wallace 1.) Percentage-wise, Richard has answered an amazing *86.8%* of all the H/H questions over these past 83 weeks. Richard starts the week off with a very good track record, having matched 42.0% of his H/H questions, slightly behind Brett's accuracy score (42.3%), and further behind Charles's (48.6%) and Betty's (50.0%). Will this be another all-Richard week? I'd prefer seeing a variety of celebs answering head-to-head questions. Nothing against Richard who does well at the H/H, but it's more interesting and exciting to see someone else have a shot at it once in a while, and since everyone else has actually done a better job of matching in the past, it doesn't seem like a sacrifice to call on them once in a while. I wouldn't mind seeing Debralee get a shot at becoming only the 39th MG celeb to score a H/H match. Of course, if I were a contestant, I'd likely choose Betty, although there's an embarrassment of good choices. I'd also be thrilled to choose either Brett or Charles as I tend to match them a lot, but now after watching Richard play 774 times, I also tend to match him more than the contestants do! Time for another ______ week of fun and games with Match Game '78! ~~~Today's action: We'll start the day (and the new MG week) right off with a Super-Match, since our champion easily (6-0) won her second victory at the end of the prior show. And now she has a couple of new (for her) celebs to possibly call on for suggestions today. *Today's audience match question: "Twist________"* (My thoughts: & Shout, -er, -ed Sister*) *I'll fall off my chair if anyone actually says Twisted Sister! The celebs: Richard (-er), Betty (of the wrist), Charles (of fate) The choice: of Fate (The audience does not agree, and, although it's an established phrase, I'd be surprised if it's up there.) The answers: of Lemon, and Turn, and Shout (Ha! I had the top answer!) Our H/H week starts off on a depressing note. This was the first audience match fail since 1126 and 1127. Amazingly, none of the panel's suggestions showed up on the board. This isn't the first time, but it doesn't happen often. Now, on with the show! We might get to a second Super-Match today. ...Well, we did manage to get a full game in, but it was a rough one for our champ who failed to say "Tinkle" on her final question, finishing with a score of zero matches. She departs after winning two games and $700. Our new champion will have to wait for her debut Super-Match, and so will we! ~~~Here's our standing leader board showing the 11 celebs with at least 3 H/H matches, ranked by accuracy: (An asterisk before a celebrity's name signifies that she has "retired" from the show and her H/H stats are now complete.) (For tied scores, I consider the one with the greater number of matches to be higher; if the matches are equal, the celeb who first achieved that score goes on top.) Orson Bean - 100% (4 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: (*)Jo Anne Worley - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). TIE: Joyce Bulifant - 75% (3 wins in 4 attempts). Gary Burghoff - 71.4% (5 wins in 7 attempts). Betty - 50.0% (19 wins in 38 attempts). Charles - 48.6% (34 wins in 70 attempts). Fannie - 48.5% (16 wins in 33 attempts). (*)Jo Ann Pflug - 44.4% (8 wins in 18 attempts). Brett - 42.3% (30 wins in 71 attempts). Richard - 42.0% (325 wins in 774 attempts). Bert Convy - 33.3% (5 wins in 15 attempts). *These stats include every head-to-head match from episode 1 through 1141, excluding the missing/damaged/unavailable episodes: 31, 32, 33, 311, 312, 313, 324, 325, 645, 910, 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027, 1028, 1029, and 1030. *Also, note that episode 849 was never produced. (These stats do, however, include the H/H results of missing episode 968 as those results were revealed in episode 969. Note: There was no H/H in missing episode 1035, as we learn in 1036.)
Charles Nelson Riley was hilarious on this game, and in the sitcom The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. I watched this game when new, throughout my teens, during 1970s. I was 12 when it got really popular during 1973, and watched it then, too. Alot of famous celebs were on it. The rebooted version is not near as good. Gene was an awesome host.
watching the eps of MG, i realize that Betty White has one hell of an edge to her - and I LOVE IT!!..completely hilarious..no wonder she portrayed Sue Ann Nevins so well!...
Typically the celebrities are slow to go with recent popular music trends. A while back they had ____ Road (or was it the other way around) and nobody thought of the Beatles album. To be fair, in 1978 the Beatles were not regarded as the cultural institution they are today; in most circles the group was considered a great music group of the time.
4:12 -- Gene and the panelists, Brett most loudly, maintain their tradition of being obnoxiously unaware of rock and roll. Chuck Berry, "The Book of Love," SERGEANT PEPPER, Smokey Robinson, and "Twist and Shout," among other things, were all mysteries to them.
For the first one... I'd say TWIST and SHOUT(Beatles song). I paused before I gave that idea; lo and behold, after un-pausing, TWIST and SHOUT was revealed in the top spot!
I thought they used the over-the-shoulder shot much earlier because I remember seeing Brett's cocktail glass constantly at her side. Then they stopped and I figured it was because of the boozing. Isn't she on the wagon by this point?
PearlJamGirl627 There was no tension between them. Richard adored Betty. I'm pretty sure she was one of the few people that Richard remained friends with following his rather unhappy departure from MG. Betty even appeared in a few Celebrity Family Feud episodes.

I have said it before and I say it again, Betty is wonderful!!! :D
She was evil. Thank God she didn't make it to 100.
"Twist and Shout" was first recorded by The Isley Brothers, and then The Beatles... not Chubby Checker.
Chubby did the Twist way before the Beatles did
Before the Isley Bros. an obscure group the Top Notes recorded Twist and Shout in 1961 and the Isleys reworked the song just like the Beatles did!
"Aw Shhh-" I can't tell you how many times I've heard Charles almost cuss on air! :P
LOL!! Soft-boiled BACON was my very first thought!!
6:40... Betty White... naughty, naughty, aren't we...?
watching the eps of MG, i realize that Betty White has one hell of an edge to her - and I LOVE IT!!..completely hilarious..no wonder she portrayed Sue Ann Nevins so well!...
It was her trademark
The passage of time spares no one, except maybe Betty White...
Not even Betty White...The Grim Reaper got her on December 31, 2021...
You can tell that Brett, Gene and Charles are having a really good time on that show, especially Brett and Charles.
Glenn Marshall and Richard
Brett🤮
Charles is still puffing smoke as he lays on the floor.
"Twist and Shout"? Beatles classic.
How could the celebrities not know "Twist and Shout"
Love Joe's reaction to Tennis Shoes! XD
Joe Garagiola has passed on recently. RIP. This makes Betty White the only surviving panelist of this episode!
Yes, 23 March, '16.
Not any more: December 31, 2021
That looks like a shoplifter camera 😂
Debralee Scott comes back after the "school riot."
Wow ! I like this view and there other Episodes with that camera view and do you have anymore ? I like to see more like this in the future .
I was shocked nobody said twist and shout! And then I was right :)
And then there was none....
RIP Betty White. 😥💔
Chubby Checker's song was "The Twist" and also "Let's Twist Again".
Eric Clapton...Gene says oh you're just making stuff up!
@@jeffclement2979: Yup.
For the first one... I'd say TWIST and SHOUT(Beatles song).
I paused before I gave that idea; lo and behold, after un-pausing, TWIST and SHOUT was revealed in the top spot!
Wow, those questions were tough..
14:27 Gene Rayburn in Divorce Court. I'd watch it.
Gene was an excellent MC, but there are times he was really quite strange! 😝♥️
Ah Joe Garagiola had his own game show hosting successes. He Said/She Said, To Tell the Truth (through 1979 or so), and Strike it Rich.
newstarcadefan $ale of the ¢entury as well.
G$8605 I had forgotten about that. Though it's too bad most if not all of the 70's episodes were/are destroyed of that run of $ale of the century.
I was glad to see him until Brett kissed him, now I'm grossed out
Joe had the charisma of an old shoe.
Chubby Checker did THE TWIST, not TWIST AND SHOUT lmao
At least someone did say The Beatles. However, I suck at matching artists to their songs. I may know the song, but I often have to look things up.
it was the Isley Brothers AND The Beatles that did songs titled ''Twist and Shout''..just don't remember the year for either group.....
Agreed...questions SUCK in this episode...
I thought of roll over instead of tinkle and she cooked a golf ball, it's white like an egg.
#DrunkenSlur @ 1.53 FanShris Patrick? Gotta Love 'em.
Of this panel, only Joe Garagiola and Betty White are still alive.
And now it's just Betty...
Is that Johnny Fairplay on the newlywed game commercial?
(13:18) A really funny moment.
Soft boiled shells? No?
Poor Richard between Brett, Charles and Debra lee stealing his answers! I don’t blame Richard for wanting to leave.
Once again, the old reliable answer "Tinkle" is the definitive answer.
oh please!!! tinkle through the hoop. enough with the tinkle!!!
Tanus/Janice (tried listening several times hard to tell exactly what Gene was saying) is a good look'n young lady.
I thought they used the over-the-shoulder shot much earlier because I remember seeing Brett's cocktail glass constantly at her side. Then they stopped and I figured it was because of the boozing. Isn't she on the wagon by this point?
Twist and Shout:
"Whose song is that?"
Wft!
18:32 Brett is so annoying she is always saying mean things to everyone, and always says everybody s anwsers stink, I think she Stinks.
i liked the answer: firecracker until i saw RICHARD'S answer - bottle of champagne :)
I thought of a spring.
When I watch these shows, I can't help but feel that Richard and Betty have tension. Just their body language. I wonder if the two got a long?
PearlJamGirl627 There was no tension between them. Richard adored Betty. I'm pretty sure she was one of the few people that Richard remained friends with following his rather unhappy departure from MG. Betty even appeared in a few Celebrity Family Feud episodes.
+PearlJamGirl627 They got along really well. In most episodes, they're always kissing and fussing with each other.
Of course they did. Richard adore her like pretty much everyone does
SOFT BOILED CHICKEN!!!!
My first thought was golf balls.
But it's normal to boil chicken.
RIGHT !!!
5 people out of 6 on the panel are dead.
I don't like the new camara view.
Kashaslove It is a really weird angle...
Did NOT like this episode. hated the questions and especially that crappy camera angle.
Nothings perfect. Gotta have a few throw away episodes once in a while.
How do you really feel?
