This video was concise and to the point. Most welders don't need to see ten minutes of bead being laid down.

Excellent video, I haven't TIG welded since my apprenticeship 40 years ago, and now I have just bought a TIG because I have several jobs that need the fine weld performance of an AC/DC GTAW process. Was very pleased to see that I still remember most of the basics, and this video was excellent for reinforcing that knowledge. I'm looking forward to rebuilding forgotten skills, and Miller's excellent Welding Tips videos will help me along the journey. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos and helping your customer base grow and succeed.

Now that is a nice explanation! Thank you!
With so many of the other welding videos, the guys gloss over a lot of the details. Beginners don't know those details, so the details need some explanation. The chap in this video does a fine job of clearly explaining the nuts and bolts that a beginner does not know.

Basically, when you’re dealing with TIG welding aluminum in high humidity, you want to be certain that your base and filler metals are as clean and free of moisture as possible. In addition to typical degreasing and oxide removal, the base and filler metals should be kept above the dew point temperature so that ambient water vapor doesn’t condense on the surface. If this happens, it will saturate the porous oxide layer and complicate your cleaning procedures.
    Hope this helps! Weld safely.

This is a common application for a TIG welder. The wall thickness of the tube/pipe dictates the weld amperage requirements need. Both the inverter based Maxstar® 150 and 200 TIG machines are commonly used for this application. Personally, I would opt for the Maxstar® 200 based solely on the inclusion of and adjustability of the pulser feature in that machine. ... (more sent directly to the emails provided)

I might also add.. as someone that has TiG welded on and off for over 20 years... (I'm still a total hack!!) a good cheat with mild steel is to use stainless filler rod... make sure everything is clean.... if you can do as many test pieces if you have spare material... practice... practice... practice! In my peak I could free hand weld along the edge of a single edged razor blade... though it was with a very ancient Tig welder.... still got that blade somewhere lol... couldn't hope to do that with my 200amp inverter hack machine I have now.
Cheers for the tips... they all help!!

There are several factors that control the amount of heat input or puddle size:
Amperage - controlled either by a foot pedal or fingertip control - more amperage will result in more heat
Voltage - controlled through the arc length - a longer arc length will result in a higher voltage (which results in more heat)
Travel speed - slow travel speed (more time in the same) area typically results in a larger puddle
    (cont.)

Hey man get after it! Just one thing to keep in mind is that you should watch real TIG welders, not this scrub. You never point the tip going into the grinding wheel(it should be noted you need a separate wheel for tungsten), for aluminum you round the tip and for the Taper size on the tungsten it’s not up to 2 1/2 the diameter size, it’s actually 2 1/2-3x the diameter

Just a quick reminder to those watching that normally you should not hold a workpiece against the grinding wheel in that position as it can easily get pulled down between the rotating grinding wheel and the tool-rest. The wheel can shatter throwing out bits of material at a very high speed causing injury.

Helium will transmit more heat to the part than argon when both are set to the same current output. So, if an application requires deeper penetration, using a helium blend or pure helium are an option.
However, helium is known for poor arc starting characteristics. It is more expensive than argon per unit volume. It requires much higher flow rates than argon (about double), which makes it even more expensive to run. Unless your application demands helium, you're much better off with pure argon.

  • @MillerWelders
    @MillerWelders  11 років тому

Settings should be the same for any machine even if the interface is different. Set it for DCEN, remote (foot) amperage control, 100% argon shielding gas flowing at 15-20cfh, 3/32” diameter 2% ceriated tungsten ground to a truncated point, and you should have filler metal rods of alloys 304L or 308L. If you want the owner's manual, go to the Millerwelds website, resources, owner’s manuals, search by name to download the manual in PDF form for free.
