I was cycling the morning when Jimmy and his wife were filming this video. I stopped by and chatted with them for a bit - they were super nice, stopped recording to let us talk for a bit. They even offered to let me crawl around the R1S! Glad I found the channel. You got a new subscriber!
I have been a 3.5 year owner of a 2021 Model Y LR, and I am just done with Elon's BS. Love the car though so it has been difficult to think about replacing it. I drove a Silverado EV this week and they are MASSIVE. Just not a practical daily driver to be honest. The Rivian R1S just seems to be my best option to replace the Model Y. Unfortunately, the nearest demo center is like a 2 hour drive from home. I am hoping the Philly area gets one soon. The EV9 GT is an option but the Tech/SW is not getting great reviews.
Would be great to see a video from the perspective of a Model Y owner. I think there are a lot of owners who have had their vehicles for 3 to (almost) 5 years now and are looking for something new that might not be Tesla. On paper there are a lot of good options but I am still unsure if there are any great options. Currently the R1S is at the top of my list.
Great Video! Thank you! Just picked up a R1S Trimax (1st ev) and love it so far. The cost is crazy, but our second choice was a BMW X7 at $97k for a comparable optioned suv wasn't that far off. My wife and I figured what we'll save in fuel and maintenance (say goodbye to oil changes and other costs) the Rivian would be worth the extra cost. We do have solar so we'll be doing the majority of charging at home. We both drove diesel motors vehicles (GM and BMW). Unless someone makes a EV that can tow a fifth-wheel I won't be replacing the truck!
Would love to hear a discussion on the standard with LFP vs the other battery options. Starting to think the Standard is actually the better option if you don’t care about the performance since the charging curve is a bit better and you can safely charge to 100. When accounting for that, not sure there is a major difference in the miles you can drive generally. First leg of a long road trip being the exception perhaps.
That's basically what I saw on my own recent road trip. First leg was the longest since we were at 100% but after would drive about an hour to an hour and half and then stop to charge for ~25mins repeatedly until we hit our destination. Charging curve (from my experience) still isn't to the level Rivian said it would be on the LFP batteries, but they're still trying to improve it. I'd say 10-80% is closer to 35 mins currently.
Looking forward to this as our next family ev- model y just isn’t roomy enough anymore! Biggest question I can’t find an answer to- how long does it take to supercharge from approx 20% or lower to 80%. With Tesla that does not take much time and keeps you moving moving right along, and would love to know rivian drivers’ experience with this.
I would love to have one of these, but I just can’t do it until they have a service center in Indianapolis. I’m not driving 2+ hours each way if it needs service that the mobile guy can’t handle. Ridiculous that they still don’t have a service center in a major metro area like Indy.
Hello Sir, thank you for this video, I want to purchase a R1s at the end of 2025 how do I use your code and or May I use your wife code to purchase a use r1s ? Thank you from Tracy of Arizona ❤
Hi Tracy! I don't believe it works on a custom config. But for orders from their inventory, you use the code during checkout, or the link here while checking out: rivian.com/configurations/list?reprCode=SHEA1393082
Bluetooth was the worst sounding audio source I tried. High recommend trying another test drive on a “premium” audio configured R1S. The latest update fixes most of my audio complaints on the R1S. It sounds quite good now
Hey man, thanks for the review, well made and interesting. I am getting the same version R1S, silver with the 22" wheels. Were you able to make it from Houston to Austin on one charge with no range anxiety?
I get from Houston to Austin using about 75-80% of the battery on the 20" wheels. Buccees in Waller/Bastrop have Tesla charging stations with CCS docks. So it's really a short stop at Buccees and you're good. Will say though, CCS chargers in Austin suck, so I always end up at a Tesla station with an adapter or Buccees!
Based on the cars I’ve owned, all the EVs (Model Y, R1S, R1T) were just slightly more expensive than my Acura TLX. But the EVs were also more expensive. This is in TX though. Might be different where you are!
The Rivian is MUCH more practical and good looking the Tesla's "truck" offering. We've been holding off on an EV until a better charging infrastructure is in place (if I live that long). They're too expensive to just use for grocery shopping in town.
It's the TWRAPS MagSafe Compatible Dual Wireless Charger! It's not permanent and just sits on top but there are solutions that disassemble the old charging pad. Didn't want to mess with all this so went with this one.
When you take your foot off the accelerator and the regenerative braking kicks in, do the brake lights turn on to let the drivers behind you know that you are slowing down?
@@JimmyTriesWorld good to know! Technology Connections did a video on the Hyundai Ioniq and one of his complaints was that the brake lights don't go on if you aren't physically pushing the pedal.
For $75.000 plus this vehicle should be premium all around. That's the problem I have with the higher priced Tesla. They charge a premium price, but you don't fell you are getting a premium product. I'll rather spend that amount of money on a BMW or Mercedes, ICE or EV.
Agreed that the interior is not as luxe feeling as a BMW or Lexus, those are much nicer. These newer EV brands kind of focus on premium software features instead to make up for it, which might not be for everyone. The Ascend trim on the tri max R1S is probably where it gets close to a BMW or Lexus but that’s 100k 🙃
I had the chance to see the gravity in person (but not sit in it). It's very luxury focused, but the base model is lacking quite a bit of features. I like the R1S better because it suits what I like to do, but the Gravity is nice too if you upgrade it a bit!
4:19, that door close thump highlights my biggest complaint. The cabin is one big low frequency boom that gives me a headache. I'd try listen to music instead if the Premium audio speakers weren't absolute garbage. No, a software update can't fix Wal-Mart bargain bin speakers.
its a shame they lose so much value the minute you drive them off of the lot.... there are so many people who figured out they can't afford the payments and then find out they are under water on them so bad they can't sell them to anyone.... its really a bad scam....
Imagine having to replace your EV only after 3 years. Still driving my 2014 Porsche Cayenne.. feels like new inside still. Why is it EV's age so quickly? As if the latest mobile phone.
Love CarPlay/ Android Auto! While Rivian’s infotainment isn’t bad and makes for some experiences that currently aren’t possible on CarPlay or AA, having them in addition to the current infotainment would be great.
My wife and I are a Tesla family. We’re on vacation for the holidays right now and rented a Rivian. It’s a nightmare. The UI lags, charging at Tesla SC are 3x more expensive, the map is faulty and does not route well, the volume has a weird issue where the volume at the same level is extremely different for Dolby Atmos and non-Dolby Atmos files, finding Chargers using the UI is a shit show. Touching anything on the screen jumps to somewhere completely different. Completely unrefined at best. Beyond build quality, we’re not a fan of the design, UI, hardware and software quality.
Not gonna lie. I hated the front of the Rivians for a long time. But now it’s just “ok”. Same with the cybertruck. I mean. It’s ugly but in a “it’s so ugly it’s interesting” kind of way?
If you believe those reports then Rivian was also rated highest owner satisfaction. From my own experience it is the most “unreliable” new car I’ve owned due to software glitches here and there. But they do get fixed quickly and is otherwise has been my favorite vehicle to date!
@13:28 That's not a software or Rivian issue... That just how Atmos is mixed. Yes it's weird as hell. I have an Acura TLX and when I'm on android auto and play an Atmos track i have to buck the volume. Same using headphones or any other speaker you play Atmos through.
That's interesting to know, at least with Apple Music volume sounds similar for atmos/non-atmos through an iPhone with headphones. Maybe I haven't tried other methods enough but super weird. I used to own a TLX (pre car play/android auto) loved the thing :).

Love Rivian and the R1S . Can’t wait for the R2.
R2 looked fantastic in person. Looking forward to it too! 😀
Just ordered R1S Tri-Motor, our second EV. So excited for this vehicle.
Ain't no way I am driving to north Houston for service, Houston is too far away from Houston
You have to live in Houston to understand that statement. 💯
LOL classic comment
Last time I tried to cross Houston I died of dysentery.

Congrats on the major upgrade to a Rivian!

Thanks for this. I am interested in gertign a rivian in the future!
Picking up my SlateSky R1S in 2 days (hope I like the aero wheels my wife insisted on); thanks for the nice review
Such a nice interior! Congrats on the Tri!!!

Why no voice control over the car functions?
Many awesome things to upgrade from my Gen 1 but paying $30k + just for those few features is hard to do.
Woohoo! 🎉
I test drove a gen 2 S yesterday and had the same impression of the audio from drivers seat, just using Bluetooth from my phone

Hard to imagine living in a world where this is considered a “mid-size SUV”
Yeah, crazy stuff.
Almost no-one needs a car that large, but it became a standard and status symbol, especially in the US.
Is there a significant difference in the cost of insurance over owning a gas vehicle?

Just casually dropping 100k on a vehicle...
Haha. No. I couldn’t imagine dropping 100k. That’s why this is the lowest trim option with many internal debates with myself :)

Same thing in terms of HOD, a deal breaker. Why can't they put HUD on their vehicles. Even $30-40,000 vehicles have them.
100k for a vehicle that can’t do voice texting that a 25k Kia from 2018 can is still mind blowing to me
