Thanks for watching friends! What's your WHY for farming, gardening, of whatever it is you do?! Please leave a comment below, we love hearing from you 😊

      Our why is easy:
      1. No poison free food available in shops
      2. Set example to other special needs families that freedom is available to them to.
      3. Less dependent on corporations
      4. Epic food
      5. Healthy work out every day.
      6. Losing gray hair.
      7. Seeing why God made us the stewards of earth.
      .... and so forth.
I am a 2de year vegetables farming gardener, still hoping to breakeven, in Africa 🇿🇦

The reason that we are starting our full blown farming activity at age 69, with a life of family gardening and agricultural engagement, avocationally, behind us is that we are doing the thing we think is most needed in the world right now. We are being the change we want to see in the world. That doesn't ignore any of your points, particularly the freedom to live life differently. It is precisely that "differently" that we are focused on. I am retired military, so I have income. We could be "following the established model" for consumption oriented, industrial, predatory, capitalist old age. We think that focusing on that life lived differently is critical for our society's survival right now. It has NOT been easy, acquiring and stepping into the life of resurrecting an old Amish farm, that (deliberately, for us) had literally none of the amenities of modern living - no electricity from the grid, no water from the municipality, no commercial or municipal waste management, etc. We have a house and a compound of seven other buildings that are gradually coming to life again. Getting the hay in from the hayfields at the right time, filling the hay loft, taking care of the steer, the new heifer, the sheep, rabbits, and chickens while we start to build out gardens has been the first productive year's return to self-reliant, resilient, sustainable living. So yes to freedom, but also a return to personal responsibility for where the food comes from, personal responsibility for the care and feeding of all that cohabits the farm with us, personal responsibility for the health and wellbeing of all the life happening on this 60 acres - deer, turkey, opossums, raccoons, rabbits, squirrels, right down to the crayfish in the creek (whose spawning grounds, it turns out is the milk tank in the spring house) and all the plants that fill the space. Reacquainting ourselves with the rhythms and flows of the natural world... with every freedom there comes responsibility. We are doing our best to embrace and nurture that.

Thank you Jean Martin. Thank you for your generosity of spirit. You are such a teacher to so many of us trying to find freedom in our own ways. I felt like I was walking down the row of cucumbers with you, us harvesting together, just talking to a friend. That was what I needed, and I’m sure I am not alone. Deep truth and a reminder of what we are striving for.

So very much resonates. Also in a contemplative mood as the season winds down. Going to be making a lot of big adjustments for the next year and for the first time scaling down and trying to put more focus on contentment for me and my family instead of purely generating income. I too enjoy the freedom of doing this work and being the master of my domain despite its many challenges. I also enjoy the iterative nature of farming, (hopefully) making tweaks and improvements each year. I think back often to Eliot Coleman saying how farming is like a mountain without a pinnacle, you can continue the adventure forever iterating and improving, never summiting. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and all you've done to promote market gardening. Happy Autumn!

The why question is exactly what has me wanting to leave my current career and become a farmer. Living a life you WANT and that you feel good about and care about is more important than money or status in whatever career you choose.

Great to hear your thoughts on that. Its so easy to forget about the choice we have when we slogging it out day after day. We often sit down and question everything just to check we're living how we want. I too love the freedom I get from being a producer and a steward of our little bit of mother earth!

And yes, I have found the same to be true. Physical repetitive work alternating with problem solving work. During the physical portion either the brain is working on the problem OR it's resting from it, but getting oxygenated and primed to solve the mental problem.

This video hits the nail on the head for me about what I wanted to leave behind and (far more importantly) what I want to work towards.
I stumbled across Six Figure Farming in 2016, and it struck a chord with me immediately. I was working overseas at the time and ever since then, I've been learning and drawing inspiration from you and others, such as Curtis Stone and Richard Perkins. My fiancee and I are coming home to Quebec now with a deep conviction that this is the life we want to build for ourselves and our new family; with all of its challenges and rewards.
We're reading The Market Gardner together (re-reading for me!) and wanted to thank you for planting the seeds for this dream of ours - pun intended :)
Merci et je vous souhaite de bonnes récoltes! (Hope my rusty French still works!)

How you can dislike a video like that? It's about celebrating a simple life! A peaceful life with no bs. I understood what JM mean by building a good environment for his friends, colleagues and family. That's don't mean you will not meet hard time and discouragement. My gosh, you provide all your community with good stuffs, work with mother nature and deal with good year as bad and move on. That pizza my friends is the gluten of a good relationship, rising with time and love. WHAT ELSE!

i find it strange that at least in my country, it feels like smalls farms are undesirable and met with alot of resistance. 120 years ago there were alot of small farms, alot of them quit or sold out after WOII becoz they became unprofitable ...and people were excited about letting machines do the hard work. Many regulations were set in place for the'benefit' of the ppl but really end up favoring large industry over small farms. I do not agree with any of it, there are many obvious and not so obvious downsides to large industry. The major downside which will prove costly is not being in tune with Earth and its rhythms. There is an interesting movie about native Americans about this called Aluna.

You know your vegetable sack that you have on your shoulders. Would it not be of some type of benefit to use a strap that was weaved with holes I know that sounds odd. But just so that it would breathe better on your body. Also using some type of breathable spandex as a cushion on the shoulder part. Because that has to put a lot of pressure on your shoulders holding that sack

You speak often of politics and your passion for debate and sharing ideas. Would you ever dare to see if your farming wisdom could help change certain policies and laws around sustainable farming? Do you ever invite a politician to pizza night to debate ;) ? I'm sure you have data to show to bolster any of your arguments immensely. What could governments do to help this industry, tax breaks, grants, etc?
Outside of politics, I know you're working with some wealthy people on your side project - is there a way to connect moral investors to permaculture farms/farmers without tainting the purity of farming being "freedom" (per your video comment)?
Regardless, JM, you're always an inspiration and have done so much. Thank you!

I remember years back when you and Curtis S. we’re tossing around the phrase“keep it in our back pocket” when developing successful market gardens.
I love hearing about what “It” (why we farm) is in your back pocket.
There is so much potential energy in “It” (the why we farm) maybe that is why it’s important to keep it in our back pocket….. to get/keep our butts moving 😄!
    Cheers farmer friend!

Spot on brother. Freedom results from living in accordance with natural law. Being disconnected from nature is a big step in the wrong direction. Being in square boxes concrete jungles eating processed foods devoid of nutrition, and we wonder why the most advanced, intelligent, civilized peoples suffer from the most disease. Not living in accordance with natural law, leads to slavery, in a nutshell. More or less the state of the world today. We think of that term in the classical sense of whips chains indentured servitude, when in reality, simply ask, what % of my labor is considered slavery? 100%? 90%? The answer is 1%, any%. Ben Franklin: “There seem to be but three ways for a nation to acquire wealth. The first is by war...This is robbery. The second by commerce, which is generally cheating. The third by agriculture, the only honest way, wherein man receives a real increase of the seed thrown into the ground, in a kind of continual miracle, wrought by the hand of God in his favor, as a reward for his innocent life and his virtuous industry.”
