Catch 20!
Ain't that the truth!
Long-term American expat here, same exact reaction as you guys about costs in the U.S., it's horrifying. I'm currently living in Vietnam where I have ZERO intention of leaving any time soon. I eat out every single day, sometimes twice a day and still able to save $1000-$2000 every month on a teacher's salary (paid in USD). I also live in luxury 2 bedroom/2 bath apartment w/gym, pool, doormen, etc for $450 a month. Hell no am I going back to US any time soon, but hell yes am I investing in the US stock market.
You teach English there? And save $1-2k a month? Woww!

Greedflation sounds about right. Big Mac Meal on Door Dash here is $10.56 before the fees. $19.74 after fees🤦🏽♀️. Being able to make money no matter where you live is the goal. Thanks for another great and informative video.
Pick up yourself
Oh wow! The delivery is crazy!
Unless someone is incapacitated or doesn't have access to transportation, I don't understand being so busy that you wouldn't pick up your own food. I actually only used Door Dash one time. We had just driven for 9 hours and checked into a hotel which didn't have a restaurant. We were exhausted, and overpaying for the convenience of meal delivery seemed reasonable.
Fast food is as expensive now as a sit down restaurant! We just paid $15 at taco bell for our son for a single meal. It's gone bonkers out here.
Wow, taco bell was our go to in college for 59 cents!
@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel not anymore, prices went crazy. We remember paying $5 and being stuffed.
The really horrifying trend that’s made retirement out of reach is housing. I sold my house in a very well to do California community awhile back. Since then I’ve rented in three different communities in the US. I now pay more in rent for an apartment than I did for my house mortgage. Retiring outside the US has always been the plan, but it gets more and more urgent as I wrap up my career. Sad state of affairs.
This is what I was talking to my husband about. We own property in CA and are preparing to retire to Nev. I told him that unless we as a nation change the way we operate our lives, one if not more of our children's children will be homeless.
Before you sell, you always have to look at rent costs. I am sure you made a large profit on your house, so you cant compare what the mortgage was from years ago vs rents today. It takes baby steps before just leaving the US.
@@robertweisberg5570 Obviously. However, when your rent increases 45% in one year, and 30% the next, as mine did during the pandemic, that’s not something you can easily plan for - anymore than I could have planned for my husband of 25 years taking off with another woman and leaving me with $1 M + in business debts which forced me to sell my house. But, that’s the point of the video. In the US those things can be devastating. Other countries have better access to things like affordable housing, healthy food, and quality healthcare. If you’re willing to take the leap you can have a less stressful and better quality life elsewhere.
You have given me hope of retirement! Big Mac in SF Bay Area is $11.13 😳 -- crazy!!!
So 35 minutes worth of labor at the current $20 hr minimum wage. I don't think that's too much. In 1985 min wage was about $3 hr and a Big Mac Meal was $2.59, so 51min worth of min wage labor. It's actually more affordable now.
we buy half a beef at a time, shop farmers markets and grow some of our food. We can make a burger for less then 2.50 and way better ingredients, most of them organic. Have not been in a fast food resturaunt in over 15 years. We are retired and yes US is crazy but life is about choices and we just refuse to give cooperate America (when we can) our hard earned money. I think it is wonderful that you have found a way to enjoy life as well and share with others. Life is to short to not be enjoying your life.
Government printing money is driving up inflation
My family has stopped doing fast food because we can do a sit down restaurant with better quality and more food and actual service for the same amount as it costs to hit the drive through.
5/8/2024 Palm Springs, CA $10.20 for one Big Mac Meal - medium not large sides without tax.
Im not sure this is solid on the economics…especially the corporate greed angle. Corporations have always worked to raise prices.
What’s really different now? The government has flooded the economy with ‚free‘ dollars via entitlements, covid payments, building programs (and calling it inflation reduction), and now loan forgiveness.
Consumers have the $ to pay inflated prices.
The Japanese yen is depressed so that accounts for part of the lower price. Also Japanese salaries are relatively low, at least compared to the US. Still I agree with you that prices are out of control in the US. I paid $50 USD for two drinks at a NYC hotel (a good one but not five star) a few ,months ago. Insane.
Minimum wage jacked way up in California is what drove prices up.
Very encouraging comments at the end. Excellent 👍.
The dollar is strong now. I was in the Tokyo airport about 12 years ago and it was around $25 for burger, fry and drink at McDonalds.
I wonder what the employees at Japan”s McDonalds makes?
Its not just USA but Australia and many places in Europe all have similar prices.
Just looked up Big Mac Meal in MD, not including taxes and delivery fees and it's $10.75 for one meal. 🤮
??DELIVERY??
It wasn't that long ago when a Big Mac would be on sale for 99 cents.
We do Culver's, no MSG. 2 meals $19.76 . We too are investing our savings. We will still keep our home base, but our goal is to reduce our monthly costs at home, to a minimum. We only have taxes, insurance, utilities, and we winterize our Northern Michigan home before traveling. We were doing 6 weeks away. This winter we will do 5 months away. And we will evaluate it and plan to increase our time away. Our summer is awesome, so being home and out on the lakes is great. But we plan to travel as much as we can as long as we are able.
That’s a great plan.
MSG is perfectly nutritious. You would have to basically stop eating vegetables to avoid it.
MSG is destroying your brain. And don't live around mothballs or drink decaffeinated coffee. Of course, I don't know you...@@genericchannel5899
The reason for the rising prices is because they have had to raise the salaries.
Big Mac Meal in Fredericton NB Canada, supersized was ~$15 Cdn/$11 US.
A Big Mac meal in Miami County, IN is $8.59 before tax.

Very interesting, we've only been to 1 country without 1. How are the food prices there in general?
@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel They have a KFC and Burger King and are in line with US pricing.
When I was in Japan in 2019 it was 1 dollar to around 100 yen now it is 1 dollar to 154. Great time to travel to Japan for Americans.
It's just going to keep getting better. Japan's economy will not be fixed due to extreme stubbornness and xenophobia.
The best in like 30 years!
Just the thought of eating at McDonald's grosses me out
My wife had a meal at McDonalds in 1983 and still occasionally complains about it.
Big mac in Austin TX is $7.09/combo $11.65 before tax. 1 hashbrown is $2.37. Greed flation is real. It feels like a big scam. This is why I eat most of my meals are at home. I don't give into consumerism. I only buy what I need. I dont use delivery apps unless I'm ill or something.
Agree we only use them in the US when necessary
The yen has been extremely weak and falling against the dollar for a couple of years now, so when you convert from yen back to dollars I’m not surprised things seem pretty cheap compared to the US. I’d be curious what the Big Mac meal of 775 yen was as a percentage of median Japanese income in yen, and compare that percentage to the USD Big Mac meal as a percentage of median US income.
It’s disgusting how corp greed / post pandemic is out of control. It’s not uncommon here in CA to pay over $18 for a quarter pounder, fries and drink.
I've been using the Big Mac meal - model - for a while now worldwide. -- I'm in Lexington Ky. area & here it's $8.47 w/tax. -- My 'friends' in the Philippines just paid $3.85 for it - an hour outside of Manila. There has been inflation there & this is with it ! -- Other countries range from just under $2 in Venezuela of all places to your $17 example. Switzerland is said to have been the highest @ about $17.00 -- pretty pathetic - it's whatever the market will bear & to hell with whatever damage it may cause ! - - - Corporate greed seems to be the guilty out of control problem here ? - - - My desire is to move to the Philippines where it's about 70% cheaper than where I am ! These past 2 years have convinced me - the US is going to get worse - not better. All of Biden's sanctioned illegal immigration has exacerbated the affordable housing shortage crisis ? Now - record numbers of Americans are homeless and many more are soon to follow - as fixed income seniors can no longer afford the greedy rent increases ! -- Even many working can't afford the rent increases ? --- Quite a sad state. 😥 - - - - - At least you two offer some real alternatives to the doom & gloom many are facing ! That income of $5K / mo is pretty amazing for an extra income stream. Others may have different skills ? --- Oh - by the way - Cambodia is a very welcoming country and many speak English. I mention it because they have no McDonalds !!! > They do have Burger King - and a Whopper 'meal' in Siem Reap last week was $4.60. 🤗 Cost of living there is very low - and many of the 40,000 expats claim to be retired there 'comfortably' for less than $1000/mo. -- a few as a couple for that ! -- S R is a beautiful City by the way - if you can take the heat. ---- Keep up the good work you two & do take care.
As long as the clueless people of the US continue to pay the prices they will continue raising them. Lucky for me I am willing to not pay the increases prices. Life is still good for me. I trade down. Wendy's still has a 4 for $4 deal. Burger King has a buy a drink and fries and get a free Whopper with a survey receipt. That is $3.85. Outback has just brought back the steak and lobster for $19.99 and steak and fries for 13.99 on Wed. Deals are out there is you look for them. Simply refuse to pay the high prices.
I can get Taco Bell burrito for $2, and that fills me up. 😂
TN…Big Mac meal $8.09, pre-tax
I think that's the lowest I've seen in all the comments!
Then I will be thankful it isn’t as high as other locations. 😋. After watching your videos of prices for food, medical things and just prices of things in general it makes me feel the US is out of control. Your term ‘greedflation’ sums up the US very accurately!! 😞
Inflation is crazy now!
Oh yes, McDonald's is very expensive. It's no longer for people in a lower income, who are looking to save money and for convenience. It's a rip off. And there's no real alternative, everywhere prices are up. There's no way out (except leave the country!)
It makes me so angry whenever I go buy groceries or anything at all. The greed is astounding. My husband and I are retired and live on a fixed income. We cannot make it in the US and even if we could it has always been our intention to move to another country. We bought an apartment in Ecuador and we’ll be living on less than half of our retirement and we will be living very well. Only 2 more months to go and then we won’t have to worry about money anymore.
We live in Ky... debt free.. house and cars paid for...etc. Because we live in one of the pockets of cheap places to live in the US. You just have to look for them. But I believe everyone should find a cheap place in US if they are going to stay. We're retired because our bills are only extra stuff like vacations and events. And I tell everyone that they need to find a plan for how to become debt free and live cheaper. I'm not ready to leave the US yet. But I do love the idea of traveling the world. I will as soon as I can get hubby to agree to cross the water. He don't like cruising or flying. So I keep showing him y'alls videos. But in my heart I know if I can just get him to Europe on a business class flight. He'll get hooked. :)
Yes, those cheap places are out there, we started out in TN and it wasn't too bad at the time.
Numbeo also keeps up with these types of metrics. It will compare rentals, clothes, types of food, etc.
I bought 2 small fries and 2 apple pies at McDonalds and the cost was almost $10! Those fries used to be $1 not too long ago. What happened??
In New Haven county, Connecticut, a Big Mac meal is $10.19 -tax. As consumers in the US we need to stop supporting this company. I noticed the drop of demand for Dunkin Donuts products. It used to be, everyday it was packed; now if they are lucky you get more foot traffic on weekends. Also, people are realizing you are better of going to a casual restaurant such as Chili’s, or Outback.
I just had a filet of fish sandwich in McDonald’s today. Sandwich only is $5.07 in suburbs of GA. I no longer order combo meals due to the cost. This is why I’m going to retire this year and travel full time in the first year to see if I like it. Then continue or find a place to park myself half the year.
At this point, I am location independent and financially independent. Are their certain banks (for depositing income, etc.) that are better than others for slow travel in countries outside of the US?
Who would have thought that the U.S. would be more expensive than Japan?
Really interested in what you think of Yucatán peninsula
We loved it, we spent our time in Merida. We would go back!
@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel would you live there? Or temporarily only? 90 days kinda thing? I wonder how easy it is to go with a dog. ?
I would also look into the ingredients used for your meals as there are small differences between countries and their legislations that have an effect on what international cooperations are able to put into the foods they serve. For example (and this info is from a couple years ago when I did my research), the fries McDonalds serves in the UK only have potatoes, oil and salt. The fries in the States had that plus a foam reducer (that may cause cancer) and something else added in. I don't remember 100% but look it up yourself if you are interested.
United States foods are poisonous. The government lets it happen. people speak up. Demand better.

I was just wondering on what you do for federal income taxes each year do you declare a area in the USA or you give a travel abroad residence?

If you want to eat fast food in the usa, the secret is using the apps. If you don't you might as well get take out from regular restaurants. Better food same price.

Did you see that viral post of a Five Guys $24.10 receipt last month? $12.49 for a bacon cheeseburger, $2.89 for a regular soda, and $5.19 for a SMALL fry, plus tax. I walked out of a Five Guys without ordering last year because the prices we so ridiculous.
We had not, thanks for sharing
I saw that video. Fast Food used to be associated with low prices. I wonder how long before people decide it's just not worth it.
My mom and I went to a Five Guys last year in Chicago. The bill for the two of us was about $40. We didn’t order anything outrageous. We each had a small hamburger, shared a small French fry and each got a beverage. We haven’t been back. Ridiculous how much that meal cost. 😡

At what point do we say it’s to much and just stop buying products that are just to much? 😢
We save most of our dinning to mom and pop places or we wait until we leave the US for vacation
Isn’t it possible that the U.S. McDonald’s consumer is subsidizing the prices in foreign countries? Without knowing the profitability in each market it would be impossible to determine this.
That was a gut reaction of mine! There are many factors involved when comparing costs in the U.S. to other countries. As long as the dollar remains strong vs other currencies it will continue to be a bargain to receive $ in the U.S. and spend in other countries. Right now the $/yen is around 150; in 2020/21 it was 105-ish so living in Japan is becoming monetarily feasible and the products Japan sells in the U.S. are now less expensive. The downside of a very strong U.S.$ is that people in foreign countries cannot afford to buy products made in the U.S.and manufacturing in the U.S. suffers. What’s important - as you have said - is knowing what works for you and leveraging it.
I was trying order a meal in Chicago for delivery…one stinkin meal and my total kept getting higher and higher everytime I canceled and started over…like it started at $28! I went to bed starving bc if I left out at night in that Chicagoland neighborhood, I would come back to absolutely nowhere to park.
Watching you is not good for my health. I want to leave tomorrow!
I left the USA in May 2023 and came back in March 2024 and was absolutely shocked at how much fast food prices increased in less than a year. It is not wage inflation driving up prices nor wholesale food prices, it is corporate greed mostly. Yes wages are up but not as much as prices for food. What is really bad is retired people on Social Security, they really can't afford to eat out, luckily I am not dependent on Social Security to live. The only bad thing is even though healthcare is cheaper overseas once I am old enough for Medicare it doesn't cover outside the USA. Well I will be leaving the USA again in May to the Philippines and back to getting a Big Mac meal delivered for around $5 so about $5.50 with tip to the driver included.
I am not sure about a Big Mac meal but I got a Filet-O-Fish, fries and a vanilla shake and they said $16.70. I was floored😮 San Francisco.
Wow! That is incredible
I know you can go to a normal restaurant for that price, which is what I do. I go to my neighborhood eatery and get a super high quality dish for that price. Fast food is ridiculous. Five guys is really expensive too.
I absolutely never buy fast food without snagging a deal on the online app. We can always get BOGO Big Macs @ 2 for about $6. Take them home and eat with chips and drinks from the kitchen. I got a Burger King Whopper, small fries, and small Coke today for $3.48. (Get a free Whopper with the purchase of a small drink & fries.) I couldn't eat it all.
That’s still a lot considering their entire meal was $4 and some change each
Speaking of McDonald’s at Chicago’s Union Station, I went there to check out the prices. The cost for the Big Mac combo meal (as of 4/25/24) is $10.39. The cost for the Double Cheeseburger combo meal is $11.59. The meals don’t include taxes. It’s ridiculous how much meals cost. Where was the $17 meal from you mentioned? Curious. I totally agree about your financial plan to earn money in the USA and spend it in a less expensive area and investing the rest.
I think it was in CT. It's so high, and the Japan prices of $4 did include the taxes!
For people living outside of the US but still have access to US financials, inflation in US may be beneficial for them. Since they get benefit of high interest rates for our US bank deposits and inflation is mostly due to employee salary nowadays, so it is harder to export that inflation overseas. Therefore “inflation arbitrage” so to speak.
Bingo! You just described me 🙋♀ Keep those interest rates steady at 5% thank you very much. All that money goes Very Far here in Vietnam 😁
Not to mention the great exchange rate this year!
@@GroundedLifeRetirementTravel Yes, closely related as high interest rates set by the Fed to combat inflation attract international entities to exchange their currencies for US dollars to invest in US products like T-Bills, which offer high yields (to compete with other products paying high interests). This increased demand for US dollars for these types of investments leads to higher exchange rates against other currencies.
I love these price comparison videos, especially when they focus on a specific item. I have just checked the price of a Big Mac meal in the UK. The prices are £6.69 for a regular meal and £7.39 for a large meal. Xe currency converter tells me this equates to $8.39 and $9.26 respectively. This includes sales tax. So not as expensive as USA but still much more expensive than Japan. It seems that McDonalds feel able to rinse UK customers also. It would be great to see more content like this. 👍
Thanks for adding that data point! It's very interesting.
The Greed will be the end of us in the US.

In Illinois, each McDonald’s has different prices. The closer your get to the City/Downtown/Loop or certain communities (even in Pilsen) the price is nuts. Also, I never realized they charge for the drink in a meal that comes with a drink?!?!😵💫 in Pilsen, a Big Mac meal was like over $12 moreso 13.00 and I noticed the drink after I choose it was $1.30 extra!!!! Lol…how? But in the western suburbs it was .80 cents extra and both those were for medium meals…NOT LARGE. 😂👎🏽
It's crazy! We went back to McDonalds yesterday in Japan and the price was somehow lower, like $4.20 for the meal, some type of sale.
According to some politicians there is no inflation! HA! Clearly they do not buy groceries themselves. Yeah it's hurting us here. Groceries are so darn high.
They want their stock portfolios to keep growing, duh. They have plenty of money for groceries so it doesn't effect them
I can tell you as a franchisee that owners aren't making more. Our expenses are out of control. I'm sure the franchise companies are making more though. What's going on in the US is ridiculous.

We’re traveling through the Southwestern USA now. We visited a MacDonalds in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and they were asking $8.99 for the Big Mac combo with medium fries and drink. New Mexico is a very poor state with low wages. We live in coastal Southern California where an excellent hamburger combo from In and Out costs less. Some companies have kept their costs reasonable. Trader Joe’s in California has not raised their prices as much as other companies so we shop there. The 99 cents only stores drastically increased their prices over the past few years and now have closed all their stores.
