My mum was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 7 years ago, a condition that occurs when the coating that protects your nerves is damaged, causing muscle weakness, loss of sensation, and trouble with co-ordination. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life and unfortunately over the past 7 years my mums condition has worsened to the point where she is now in a wheelchair, with movement in only her head, neck and one arm. She is now classed as a primary progressive MS sufferer, which means her symptoms will gradually get worse over time.
The cause of MS is still unknown and currently there is no cure, but the research into MS is progressing fast. The MS Society puts money into research, both for finding out the cause of MS and for developing new medications that can help manage and in some cases slow down the progression of people’s MS. They also provide help and support to sufferers of the condition and their families, through advice and counsel, care support, and trying to inform others that don’t know about the condition.
I am aiming to raise as much money as possible for the society, not only to further help support people suffering with the condition, but also to help gain a better understanding of it’s cause, and eventually find a cure in the future.
