- From the film "Trouble Brewing" (1939), starring George Formby, Gus McNaughton and Garry Marsh. Composed by George Formby, Harry Gifford & Fred E. Cliffe.
This scene takes place in the pub at the races after the horse that George Formby and his pal Gus McNaughton backed came in first place. Things soon take a turn for the worse as counterfeiters approach Gus at the bar and change his winnings for fake bank notes.
Lyrics:
Can't help grinning, I've been winning, had a real good do
And now I'm telling you, grey skies are turning blue
What a racket, what a packet I have won today
Trouble's over, I'm in clover, everything's okay
I feel like a millionaire, I'm all deluxe and how
I'm in the money, tasting the honey
Hitting the high spots now
All my frowns have turned to smiles, no wrinkles on my brow
I'm stepping out more, getting about more
Hitting the high spots now
Life is what you make it, so make it worth while
Whatever comes just take it
You've got to swing along and get in rhythm
I'm on top of all the world, I'm making good and how
Turning the switch on, putting the ritz on
Hitting the high spots now
I'll be living like a lord and Lord knows who or how,
I'm in the right school, going to night school
Hitting the high spots now
Horses, women, wine and song, and greyhounds too - bow-wow
When there's a cert on, putting my shirt on
Hitting the high spots now
Life is what you make it, so just make it worth while
Whatever comes just take it
You've got to swing along and get in rhythm
In the best society I soon will make my bow
Dressed up tricky, with a clean shirt on
Hitting the high spots
I'll be a big shot
Hitting the high spots now
Truly makes me smile, and his movies still pick me up when having a crap day,oor George when Britain was still great.
Love the wee shake he does when saying "I'm stepping out more getting about more"
I KNOW.
George brings back many memories for many.
This was the man that helped England get through those horrible years when a bomb could land on you at any moment. Keeping that in mind and enjoying this wonderfully cheerful song and his delightful delivery of it gives this an entirely new perspective. Thanks for sharing his always wonderful work! Michael
George is (was) top class, added to my GF playlist, super upload ! *****
ps my fave GF song is I'd Like a dream like that (when I'm awake), classic !
very best wishes,
Del :)
All Heart!
Not sure how to tune my newly aquired Dallas D to the right key to play along to this great song. . Any ideas anyone?
I just looked at the chords he was playing, then checked what notes match on my keyboard.
Tune your uke's high string to C# (and the other strings relative to that, so the next string is G#, then E then B). It's quite a high tuning.
Brilliant, as with everything else Formby.. but two things puzzle me about this performance (or staging, if you prefer to call it that):
a) why does he bother with the 'ooh is this yours? No. Yes!' routine at 0.35-0.39? It's embarrassing. Director's orders or Formby not being able to resist any joke opportunity?
b) Why is that man surprised at 1.05 when Formby takes the ukelele from him? He's been taking a collection in a hat on Formby's behalf for at least 15 seconds before that happens.
You can see that guy playing on the stage when they first walk into the bar, so I think the suggestion is that he's collecting tips for himself, having just finished, rather than George.
lol tell me you haven't seen the film without telling me you haven't seen the film
