  • I got this rusty antique axe head for $4. I this was a nice tool restoration project once again and I leaned a ton. This was my second axe restoration. Go check out the first one too!
    I started by polisihing the axe and sharpening so it shaves. I also restorerd the edge to better condition as the previous owner had sharpened it very badly. Rremoving the axe head turned out to be tricky as the eye of the axe was filled with something other than wood. I had to drill it full of holes but id didn't bread and it was still very tight. But luckily I managed to get it out after a while of hammering.
    The handle I made from local ash lumber which I sawed with my dad's giant DIY band saw. I dried the wood and shaped the handle. The smaller wedge I added last was actually a piece of wood that chipped when I was shaping the handle and I thought I'd put it back in right where it was. That turned out looking great.
    Thansk for whatching my project. Please let me know what you thought and subscribe for future videos! Remember also to turn on the notifications.

    Been watching this channel for about a week now, and one of the things I've concluded is don't break into this guy's house because he has a plethora of reforged antique legendary tools and equipment that he will smite you with. Hammers, axes, hell even Aquamans trident. Burglars beware 😂

    I watched a few other guys on similar channels and I got shunned because I said they used “acid” before they used grinders and I was told I was ignorant. I watched this man legitimately bring something back to life with what I can only assume is how it’s supposed to be done and he actually made it sharp and proved it was sharp. I don’t know much but why do people say someone else is trolling because they give feed back, but when they correct you it’s not trolling? Even though they were waiting for someone to say something to give them a reason to speak? This is what I want to see, you just got another subscriber

    Great video. I've just gotten into restoring old tools. I have an axe head I'm working on now and I'm using your videos as a guide. Can you tell me what the tools/disks you use for sanding/polishing? Specifically, I'm interested in what you used in your drill press. There were 2 attachments - one was approx 2" tall, and the other looked like steel wool. Then you used something red, like a rubbing compound. Can you tell me what those were?

    Hang on a minute, when you started making the handle the axe head still had a lot of pits and and scratches in it and then you went to fit the handle to the head it was all polished and shiny. How much work went into polishing that axe because I have spent 5 hours today polishing a meat cleaver and I have many more hours to go so how long did it actually take to get that beautiful shine. I’m trying to figure out if I’m doing something wrong, I’m to particular or it just takes a long time. Love your work so please keep the videos coming.
    Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

    • @OddTinkering
      @OddTinkering  5 років тому

      I don't remember anymore but rypically it takes a lot of time. With power tools it's quicker but you need to use water or have a lot of pauses to prevent the item from heating and ruining the tempering. Use very rough paper until the pits are almost gone and the start moving to finer grits. Also the whole blade of the cleaver could be hardened which of course makes it harder and therefore the process slower. On the axe, the hardened area is only near the blade. Other parts of the steel are much softer. The axe is also very thick piece of steel so there is less risk of over heating which allows me to grind it longer periods between cooling it down. I hope this helps

    • @scroungasworkshop4663
      @scroungasworkshop4663 5 років тому

      Odd Tinkering. Thanks it sure does. I started with flap discs and then the pads that I think you may be using as well. Black first, grey, red, white ect up to blue which is 1000 grit then I gave it a quick buff and saw straight away that it wasn’t good enough so started with wet & dry 240g and I’m up to 600g. I think I have most of the marks out of it so tomorrow I’ll use 800 and then back to the buffer. When using the flap discs and pads I had to stop and cool the blade quite often to avoid heat damage and that really slows progress but it has to be done. This cleaver is English made and now I’m polishing I can clearly see the tempering line along the blade at about the half way down mark. I’m a bit of a perfectionist so I’m told but I won’t be happy until it shines like a mirror. Thanks for your help and at least I know I’m on the right track. It does just take a long time. Thanks heaps, Stuart 🇦🇺

      Thanks! There really isn't a short answer to this. except for hard work and consistently creating content. I too have just go myself some spare time, ALL of which I now use making videos (previously I didn't have any spare time and when I got big videos, I couldn't be posting more anytime soon, so there went my breaktroughs...). However there are some tricks you could try, like making an axe restoration, you might get 100K views, or you might end up like this video , only getting a few views. But your best bet really is hard work. Remember, you are not only making a restoration, you are making a movie about restoration. If your movies are entertaining and well made, they will get more watch time and likes etc, which will eventually lead to success. Don't care about some people really hitting the algorithm while you only have a few subs. Try to figure out why they succeed and try out new things. And don't forget to check out your analytics page, that can really help you see e.g. what makes people stop watching your videos or jump ahead. Here are only some pointers, but I'm no master at this yet, I only have 7500 subs after this many videos.

      The new youtube studio which is in beta phase, but I think everybody can access it, has a tool which shows you how often your video is clicked if it is shown to a user. Often the problem is that your video is good but is its just not found by anyone. This tool will help you see what sort of thumbnail works. Also with thubnails and filming your videos you should consider that most people watch youtube on their phone so the screen is quite small and the thumbnails will be very small. You might want to really zoom in on the object in your thumbnail

    Good way to ruin the life of a file by sliding backwards over the teeth. Other than that, beautifully done.

    WTF is it with amateurs and angle grinders? I've been making knives and repairing shit for 40 years and I've never owned an angle grinder.
    Oh, and that axe isn't antique, it was made after 1988.

    Why not wear some type of gloves during all this?

      Good question. if he's like me at all, it could be he feels restricted by gloves and makes more mistakes when wearing them.
