It will outlast the owner if applied to spec Some McLarens come with body filler from factory to smooth out the carbon before paint. 2. I will come out and address this as I’ve seen a handful of negative comments saying the painter is not at fault. I personally had a similar experience with this SAME exact painter/shop as to what Ryan just experienced…. Same guy….. Ironically enough my experience happened last year for also a SEMA car I built and revealed at the Toyo Booth. My situation ended with the painter more than doubling the total cost, going back on what was agreed upon, and threatened to hold the car until that was paid. (Went with cops and paid the AGREED amount and took the car which still wasn’t finished either from unpainted areas, work still needing to be done). Besides the point, this painter should not be trusted and to those saying otherwise, you’re more than welcome to go give him your money, he will willingly take it and give poor quality work OR try to give you the run around taking more than what was agreed upon.
More people need to hear your story as well. The painter kept telling me about @typicalstevenn and the situation. None of which I cared to hear... Poor business.
I am very sorry to hear you dealt with all the up charges that you experienced. Finding people with good character and craftsmanship keeps getting harder. Car looks amazing.
Is not that it's getting harder, is that people trying hard to convert what should be normal, good quality with integrity into normalizing crappy work as the normal to overcharge for a good paint job.
In 2009, I got my EK painted at Maaco for $1600. The paint job looked AMAZING especially for Maaco. I was insanely happy with it for many years. I eventually got my dream paint job in 2020 for $6000 plus another $1000 for a detail shop to sand the entire car down to perfection with paint correction & protection.
As a someone once in the autobody world and who has painted a couple cars, if the paint came out soft and still soft after a couple days heck even weeks, no amount of baking will cure the paint. That most certainly has to do with the mixture. Probably that "Painter" didn't add enough hardener to the mixture which is wild to me. Regarding "Bondo" there is this notion that it is the devil or some taboo ness with it. Body Filler/glaze is used from collision repair all the way to cars competing in the Riddler. Certainly you want the technician to get the metal as straight as possible and then add that last skim of glaze to get that panel laser straight. Now you mentioned you paid $10K for the job but the question most importantly is what materials were being used on the car. For example, One company Axalta formerly Dupont has several tears of paint. The economy line Nason all the way up to Spies Hecker which is used on Super cars and high end luxury. Last thing you want is a car sprayed with a cheap economy clear and 5 years down the road the clear fails and starts peeling. A honest painter will keep it 100% with you and show you the materials being used. Good materials are super expensive. Regarding the rough spots felt by the paint correction guy, that definitely sounds like he sprayed it in a garage with little to no ventilation or worse he panel painted the car because he didn't have a big enough compressor and just try to make it work in hopes you won't know. I don't know much else nor do I care, but if you spent $10K and super high end materials were used (highly unlikely) that would of been a good deal for you. Seems like this guy wasn't all that honest because no one should charge $1100 to DA a bumper lol unless it's this ultra rare 1 of 1 that is in need of a serious repairs/restoration. Right from the jump I tell the customer buy a new OEM/Aftermarket bumper I am going to scuff it, adhesion promoter and it's ready for paint. I don't know what's the deal with those "low points and high points" you were mentioning but that sounds more like the body work and you can't block the clear straighter. I also blocked cars down to a glass finish and I just can't role the dice on this one. Yes you might have sanded the top layer where it was soft, but you are still at a very high risk of failure later down the road. Paint correction guys are not painters. That's not his scope. Please feel free to get the paint brand/line used and contact one of the chemists from the company, they will confirm this with you. Btw, older Ferrari's until 2000's used BASF Glasurit, German paint which is superior and now used in Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi today. Lamborghini and Ferrari now have a contract with PPG. PPG is okay. Their Deltron line is a pain in the ass to work with. In my opinion, BASF RM/Glasurit is the best.
Hey Ryan, Dave Crandon here. Glad to see you've got the car better looking. Sad about how much hassle it took to get you there. I'll be K-swapping my S2k soon (using your wiring of course), but I'll be painting it first. I've spent the last year worrying about where it's gonna be done. I know of several shops that I've had repairs done at that do a great job, but none want to do a full repaint. I think I've found the place though..My initial quote, including welding on two new OEM quarter panels, was $11K. Bringing it down to the bare metal first is another couple thousand. .I'll stop by before I bring it in.

Hey brother I've been a supporter of yours for a while and bought your plug in kits. I have a chance to buy your AWD CRX. will you be willing to tell me everything about it if I buy the car? Thanks and kind regards
That’s Cali for you it’s so hard to find good shops. Most will take your money, over charge and do a half ass job and keep your car for ever. Also golden rule never pay all upfront. Do what you promised and then you will get paid. If you can’t do it just say so. Now I just do my own work much as possible.
In my experience its tough to navigate the paint/restoration process because their are almost always unforeseen conditions that have to be dealt with and fixing the unforeseens not only cost money but also time. With this being the case, you need to have some fluff built into your time schedule because asking them to fix a bunch of unforseens and restore additional pieces beyond the original scope of work without giving them any extra time to complete these tasks is also not really fair. I'm not saying they should be let off the hook on the quality work that they put out but there has to be some amount of give and take. Expecting a car to be "perfect" with super tight timeframes is not very realistic in my opinion. You should thoroughly vet the shop and then trust the process understanding that its likely going to take longer than originally anticipated. For $19,000 I wouldn't have let them off the hook on executing the color sanding and buffing part of what was agreed upon being a show quality paint job. I would have either held their feet to the fire on that or backed that out of their compensation based on your estimates to have it paint corrected. And if they didn't like that, then they should have executed it themselves. Its really tough to come behind someone as a detailer and try to fix some else's mistakes not really knowing what's been done to the car paint wise.
In my point of view did Ryan get scammed? Hell yes. First in for most it is very difficult to find a good paint shop. Recommendation can go so far. For a paint job worth 15k plus and it’s a solid white was high way robbery. White is the cheapest color so even a gallon of water borne paint (ehp, 100line or cromax) is no more than 800-900 as a walk in. I had to look through social media found the shop using valspar. Even clear coat was cheap, in which the painter either didn’t use enough activator or he added a shit load of coats at once. Luckly his paint correction guy was able to salvage the paint but in reality the car should have repainted. I’m sure that clear is still soft and will probably never harden. Take it as an experience, and browse around different shops in the future.
It is what it is. Sometimes you need to go through stuff like this to truly gain experience and wisdom. It's easy for others to criticize and say you should have done this, or that, or the other thing. When you're trying to figure something out for the first time, you hear so many differing opinions and all sorts of conflicting advice it can be hard to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you don't have someone you can trust with experience in said subject, there is no way to know who's advice to give the most weight to. The only TRUE way to find out, is to f*ck around! Unfortunately, this can lead to costly lessons. Fortunately, these tend to be the lessons you gain the most insight from. I bet going forward, you'll have a lot more confidence behind your decisions because now you'll have first-hand concrete experience why you are making them (as opposed to just second-hand theory). Great work. You're fighting the good fight. Live and learn, brother. Can't wait to see it when it's done.
A good paint shop is 90% trust 10% skill. Trusting a shop to do the paint, take care of your car, be honest, and fix the issues are hard to find. I'm sure the shop was recommended by good friends but some painters just cant be trusted..
In my experience, not even having had a car painted yet; finding a LEGIT painter who is not only HONEST but GOOD is nearly impossible nowadays. Everyone says they have a guy who's really good, friends or otherwise. I've heard SO MANY horror stories online and through friends. The good painters out there are not easy to find, and the "gOoD" ones charge similar prices, and take forever holding your shit hostage. I feel for you on your experience. It's disgusting what has happened to the paint and body work industry. It's absolutely horrifying. I'm glad you've found someone who is LEGIT and the car is looking great on camera! I hope it comes out looking as amazing as your asking and PAYING for with YOUR TIME AND MONEY!!! When it's done CORRECTLY, the results speak for themselves. 🙏🤙
I had my Integra painted by a friend 20 years ago, with me helping. More and more over the years I’ve come to realize how shit that paint job was. I intends to respray it again in the near future, but I’m starting to think I’m going to have to learn how to do it myself, because no one else will take the time to do it right, at least not for the money I’m willing to pay.
@@altena2036 yeah it's been going downhill this whole time. I found a lot of bad Bondo work all over the car, the hood had like 8 layers of paint and primer, and overall the surfaces just weren't prepped right.
Damn, that sucks. Sorry you went through that. I hear so many horror stories with paint jobs. I wonder what brand paint he used? You can get charged for a good high end brand & they can easily use decent to cheap paint.
All the work described would be worth $25k if it had been done correctly. Sounds like something I would have charged $18-20k for but it wouldnt have needed much for paint correction. Also, some show clears will tend to stay "soft" for a while, but what youre describing is clear that never cured. Completely different situations
Youre describing orange peel in the paint. Pretty common in a "normal" paint job. Cant be wet sanded and buffed to glass. Im glad i dont have friends like these. The paint guy needs sued. Hats off for not keeping thr name a secret. Good looking car nonetheless. A friend had thr same model we used to show in the early 90s.
There are so few quality paint shops remaining. This is just the unfortunate reality of the mid level paint shops these days. Try to vet your service providers better in the future. Lesson learned.
Ryan, as a Porsche shop owner I'm sorry to hear this happened. It's a great example of how even if you are well known in the space anything can happen. As for all the other silly comments in here, most people do not understand what it takes and the money it cost for a truly world class paint job. No you cannot spend a few hundred or even a few thousand... Think about it kids... Good material on its own can easily cost $5k.... How does your $6k total paint job make the painter any profit? It's because you don't have anything close to a world level paint job. And no, your 4/10 paint job is not a world class paint job. A quality Italian down draft booth can cost $250k. No shop that has high end equipment will charge less than $20k to do top level work. That being said, sounds horrible this happened to you. You didn't mention anything about his equipment and what materials he was using. I tend to ask these questions to help determine how legit they are along with getting with several friends in the industry. Sad to hear it won't be at Toyo. I'm bringing a Porsche build to Toyo this year and would love to see mine next to yours. Hope for better days ahead man!
You should have just built a paint booth and painted it yourself. It would be a learning experience and you could have reinvested that money in another vehicle.
Funny you’re not the first person I have heard of having bad experience with them. I know they do a lot of insurance stuff and that can be a bad mindset to have in a painter if you need perfection. Just get it in and out ain’t good all the time. I’m surprised because they probably knew who you are. Maybe not I just know they always got Hondas there.
I'm not even a "body" guy, but as soon as I heard this guy say, "I don't want bondo" tells me this guy has no clue of how body filler works and the whole body shop processes for that matter. All "Sema" quality cars have body filler, how it's worked is what separates it from backyard job or "show" quality work.
To be honest never tell them you have budge just ask how much it going to cost and that the price and it better off that way not the way you went just my opinion
Damm slick painter dude but we all learn from mistakes i personality get fuck up with my engine with one of my supposedly best friend have to change the hole engine internals
Rip off. I do paint for a living. High-end show cars usually end up being around 30k for a 3-stage paint job. Quick refresh with minor bodywork, should be around 10k-15k completely buffed out looking better than new.
Going down this rabbit hole for a bit. Looking at ulysses ig he definitely charged you by the word haha. He spends probably 50 percent of his time yapping to his coworkers. After seeing him aircraft strip the bumper. Not a big deal but to use a metal putty knife on a plastic bumper knowing full well you didnt want any bondo on the car is just careless 😂
The clear shouldn't be taking more than a few days to pass the fingernail test I hate to break it to you but it probably will have to end up being re cleared because if it isn't hardened after 5 weeks it ain't gonna ever cure correctly
@@victorsabala2108Acura of Pembroke Pines near Miami, south Florida. One of the best painters out there, with a real talent for teaching others (his day job is a school teacher). Scorpion on UA-cam is another good one, also in that area I believe.

So either way you are trying to correct a low quality paint job. That all together is a loss. This is pushing me to just learn and paint it myself. Sure i will be thousands but at the end i cant blame nobody but myself. If you want something done right or in your eyes "sema presentable" you have to do it yourself.

My buddy paints for a living and told me that a full paint job would be 15-20k if it were and insurance job and like 4-10k if it’s out of pocket
You know I was staring right at the engine bay wondering what’s in that then he said ELECTRIC my jaw dropped
You’ve fried your brain cells wtf 26k for a paint job is absolutely nuts!
Mitchel from Technique was the lifesaver on this project
@@rywireWhen it comes time for my build to be painted, I hope he's still around so I can get a quote and have him do mine! 😅🙏🤙
@@Patrick94GSR20yrs and you call it 💩?
@@altena2036 yeah it's been going downhill this whole time. I found a lot of bad Bondo work all over the car, the hood had like 8 layers of paint and primer, and overall the surfaces just weren't prepped right.
Why not use the shops you've used in the past?
Damn, that sucks. Sorry you went through that. I hear so many horror stories with paint jobs. I wonder what brand paint he used? You can get charged for a good high end brand & they can easily use decent to cheap paint.
Id love to see in person. With someone who wouldnt be offended if flaws were found
I would like to see this paint we sand all day have you guys used a ir lamps? Great video
Damn I’ve done a Sema build and didn’t charge that much smh 🤦♂️
Sorry to hear this nightmare. Too bad you don't have any bodyshops you regularly work with.
back when I had my CRX it was in the body shop for a year. by the time I got it back I didn't even want it anymore since I picked up a motorcycle...
Problem is people know who you are and so people will take advantage.
Dude ,it sucks that you had to deal with that. I wish that upon no one.
Sadly, this story reminds me of dumping a lot of money and being disappointed. I’m forced to work my project myself these days.
All the work described would be worth $25k if it had been done correctly. Sounds like something I would have charged $18-20k for but it wouldnt have needed much for paint correction. Also, some show clears will tend to stay "soft" for a while, but what youre describing is clear that never cured. Completely different situations
why not take it to a bodyshop that you already know like signature autobody, etc?
Youre describing orange peel in the paint. Pretty common in a "normal" paint job. Cant be wet sanded and buffed to glass. Im glad i dont have friends like these. The paint guy needs sued. Hats off for not keeping thr name a secret. Good looking car nonetheless. A friend had thr same model we used to show in the early 90s.
There are so few quality paint shops remaining. This is just the unfortunate reality of the mid level paint shops these days. Try to vet your service providers better in the future. Lesson learned.
I wish you came to us you would be soo happy in half the time.
and who are you?
@@davidcrandon2329 the name of the shop is BLVD collision in burbank ca
The last thing I would do is Ceramic coat this if it hasn't fully "cured"
Is that OEM tinted glass? Looked killer
Only paid $25k over!!! Not too shabby my guy
Man I'm struggling to find someone to paint my EK Civic so I'll probably just wrap it.
That fact that you covered the lowest paid workers yearly salary is batshit crazy.
what on earth is the powerplant in that thing??
Those painters are crazy! I wouldn‘t pay that ammount of money, EVER!!!
Sponsors pay for it , he don’t care the cost
You should have just built a paint booth and painted it yourself. It would be a learning experience and you could have reinvested that money in another vehicle.
Funny you’re not the first person I have heard of having bad experience with them. I know they do a lot of insurance stuff and that can be a bad mindset to have in a painter if you need perfection. Just get it in and out ain’t good all the time. I’m surprised because they probably knew who you are. Maybe not I just know they always got Hondas there.
So sad for a solid white cheap valspar paint job no more than 7k, especially not painting in a heated booth 😢
You need to put this guy on blast. You cant let him continue to scam fellow car builders.
The fact you paid or even contemplated paying 10k just shows ya kinda deserved this lol 😂
10k is normal in SoCal for a quality paint job , what are you talking about?
Sorry to hear this. That painter should've been stand up and cut the bill way down.
Rip off. I do paint for a living. High-end show cars usually end up being around 30k for a 3-stage paint job. Quick refresh with minor bodywork, should be around 10k-15k completely buffed out looking better than new.
Pd sounds legit but that painter hustled you.
6:56 is the shop's name.
sucks..like most shops you need to in house everything.
You could had shipped it to Mexico or Puerto Rico and would had gotten A1 quality work for 1/3 of the price
lol
Wow bro. sorry bro for it. that's a 3 k paint job in my country.
No i dont feel sorry, you told them you had money . What did you expect ? 😂😂
The clear shouldn't be taking more than a few days to pass the fingernail test I hate to break it to you but it probably will have to end up being re cleared because if it isn't hardened after 5 weeks it ain't gonna ever cure correctly
Probably could've gotten a low mileage clean EG for that much money!
Sunk cost fallacy is a pain in the ass.
I don’t think a single person in the comments agrees with you on this one coach
Ahh man now I need to paint mine black
I would got in contact with Brian from paint society from UA-cam
That would be great collaboration. A lot of people get great info from that.
No Idea who that is, but thanks for the recommendation.
@@rywire what so video and you well see 👀 he lives in Florida he work at Honda in Orlando I think
@@victorsabala2108Acura of Pembroke Pines near Miami, south Florida. One of the best painters out there, with a real talent for teaching others (his day job is a school teacher). Scorpion on UA-cam is another good one, also in that area I believe.
how are you a "professional" auto paint shop and your "spray booth is down" lol
I’ve seen your car on his IG stories and thought it was coming out good but damn I guess not 😳
Macco could of dun a better job ...sorry
oh my God is this going to be a long story???
sorry i think that 10k is super expensive
Paint shop bent you over id sue
Damn
80 hours on a paint correction . Lmfaooooo you got shafted on the paint and then shafted on the paint correction . Should have just spend the 7k on a resprays that comes out with only a denibbing . You got milked because of who you are and establishment
So either way you are trying to correct a low quality paint job. That all together is a loss.
This is pushing me to just learn and paint it myself. Sure i will be thousands but at the end i cant blame nobody but myself. If you want something done right or in your eyes "sema presentable" you have to do it yourself.
Seems like MOST Painters, not all Are Up charging and Doing Shitty Jobs these days
$26000 paint job??! Was the paint made out of pandas?
you got got
His a scammer, he knows what his doing.
