I'm going to try making a memory quilt for my mom This is my first time quilting. My dad passed 😢 in July. I know this will be a difficult holiday time. For her and I want to make something special. I am working on 3 memory quilts for my friend's kiddos from her husband's shirts. He passed 10 years ago, and we were going to make a quilt for her, but she was very emotional and just couldn't do it. He was a size 17 to 18 shirt plus long sleeves of 35 to 37 inches. I got (50) 5" blocks from each shirt. A couple I got (60) 5" squares. I know, it sounds like a lot, but on fabric with no direction, it was quite interesting. I never thought that there would be that much. I am making HST's as there are so many pattern configurations to do. Plus, I have pieces that are 2 to 2.5 inches from the sides that I will use to make dogs for each of the 6 grandkids. I got a free pattern on Pay It Forward for 2 different dogs. Any pieces left over will be a scrappy border or binding. I also bought a bolt (20" x 48 yds) of Pellon 44f for stabilizing. I used that on 6 memory bears that I made out of my friends' shirts for her grandkids after she passed this year. Thankfully she had kept her husband's shirts so that I can do these quilts for her children.
That’s wonderful! I would love to see them when they are complete. It is such an emotional process for the family members and so emotionally rewarding for us when we see how happy they are when they receive the quilts and bears. Thank you for watching!
Hi Rosemary, Thank you so much for watching. I am so wasteful when it come to my stabilizer...I really should figure out a way to save on it so I could save some money too. I'm an apparel decorator by trade and love using my heat press rather than my iron it is so much quicker. :)
After my husband passed I cut his shirts in 2 1/2 “ strips and had enough fabric to make front and back of a queen size quilt. I call mine a comfort quilt. I am going❤ to put the name of all our family on the quilt.

Hi Chris Ann, I did and we lost the footage...so sad...but, we may have another memory quilt order coming in within the next month or so and we will make sure we put that sd card somewhere safe. :)

Hi, if we sew a plaid, and the piece of fleece is smaller than the project, how can we do ? we sew piece of fleece together ? but it's complicated to do that. If we add pieces of fleece it could be seen.

You can ramble all you want. Cut apart things you have held onto and cherrish is not easy. Take your time. I have found the easiest thing to do is pick one size you would like a block to be...if this is by cutting out a shirt into the largest size block you want to have in the quilt...then go with that...now take the smaller items and cut them into smaller blocks and then sew those smaller blocks together until you have a block that is as big as the larger shirt block you made. This will help make it a little easier then having a bunch of different sized blocks all over and hopefully keep from having you overwhelm yourself as to where to go next.

I would still use some type of fusible interfacing unless you are going to fuse the fabrics together. Otherwise if I am understanding correctly and you sandwich two pieces of the same material to help prevent transparency it can shift and cause other issues.
Efficient might have been a longer ruler and cutting strips to then cut into 4 1/2" blocks? I would be worried about cutting off a finger trying to cut the squares with such a small ruler :)

Hi Diane, Once you have decided how you would like your quilt blocks you can start sewing your blocks together with a 1/4" seam allowance. I start left to right sewing one row together at a time and then I sew the top to the middle and then to the top/middle to the bottom row. I press everything nice and flat and cut any stray thread hanging around. Once all of my 9 patch blocks are sewn together I do the same thing on a larger scale...I take the first 9 patch block and sew it to the middle and keep working from left to right or top to bottom it is your preference and however, it works and is comfortable for you. When all the blocks are sewn together and you have your quilt top completed I iron everything again and cut any stray threads. Now you can pick your batting and backing. I use a cotton/poly blend batting and I go for a backing material that has a pattern to it to help hide any mistakes in the longarming process. Let me know if you have any questions. I'm sorry we were unable to film parts 2 and 3. I will be making a t-shirt quilt within the next couple of weeks and a lot of the techniques used will be in that video. Kelly

You could make guitar blocks the size of your 9 patch and have them interspersed throughout.

I would cut 4 1/2 inch strips first then cut the squares from the strips.

Very true! I get chills when I think about it! I need to practice more patience and I’ll have a better chance of saving my fingers.

What temp do you have the heat press temp set at?
320 degrees…I do not even lock it in…just pull it down for a few seconds…check it…and press a little more if needed.
