    a more structured approach is to start with the difference between the two sides of your objective, and show that it reduces to zero. to do that all you need is to replace c with -a-b, and just systematically distribute collect and cancel. my work was a bit briefer than yours, but more importantly a 14 year old with command of the binomial expansion formula could have anticipated my every step.
