    For anyone doing this. STOP
    Do not remove exhaust.
Remove lower engine mount and you have all the room.
    Takes 45mins to swap starter.
15mm bolts to the mount 1 I hidden under oil filter. Other 3 are easy to get to.
18 mm nut bottom and top of the Cushing for mount bracket.
Then you'll have wide open access to starter from underneath.
    Very easy

@@TK-ng9lj no. It's pretty self explanatory once ya look at it.
Remove oil filter. Then remove the motor mount. Then you'll have access to starter.
Most of motor mount bolts are accessible from under the car.
Use jack and jackestands to raise and support car.

@@AutoMotoMechanic Lifesaver, I did the way you recommended, it was a 13 buick enclave, I did not remove the oil filter, only the front engine mount, 4 bolts to the engine and the top bolt that attaches to the mount.
Not 100% it was needed but I did jack the engine putting a wood piece under oil pan. wasn't too bad unfortunately it didn't solve my issue

I didn't have to remove the oil filter. Only the sensor was blocking me from putting the new starter back in. She starts up just fine now 😄 video was super helpful 👌thanks

I just changed my starter out today, excellent video. Only difference is I didn't take my knock-sensor hex screw all the way out. That thing is horrible!! Back it our far enough to get the starter to drop. Its hidden in there really good. If I'd taken it out I'd never been able to get it back in.

Excellent video on the subject. I have a bad starter; car was hesitating to start for few weeks now finally it is dead. I check the resistence across the battery terminal it is "dead short", I removed the starter cable from the battery, the short is gone. Charged up the battery, power came back to the vehicle. I then check the starter cable with chasis ground, it is dead short. I want to tap on the starter without replacing it to see if it rectifies the short. I will then start the car and take it to the mechanic for starter replacement.
This video was great help for me to understand what is involved in replacing the starter. I can do it but I don't have supporting jack to stablize the car. Thank you very mut Bitter Pill: your video was excellent and you brought everything in the view with great efforts. Good job. Keep it up.

Discovered you don't need to remove sensor or oil filter to get starter out... Take cat convertor out completely ... Get a good light & twist starter just right - solenoid part of starter will slide just under sensor (white plastic) ... it will clear sensor bottom with enough room to be able to remove other end of starter from housing. Turn starter & remove power connections - then you can remove starter completely.

I would used copper anti-seize as it will handle 1400 deg, but the next time would make it a lot easier.
Hint if you remove the plastic cover for the radiator you don't need to use a wobble extension you can use just straight extension to remove those bolts on the heat shield.

That’s not a donut gasket. Lol. And never take off the positive wire first always take the negative off! Either one will stop the circuit from being completed but while taking off the red wire you can arc out accidentally hitting a ground with ratchet where if you did the ground first, and hit a ground nothing happens. And with the ground off now if you hit the red to body ground nothing will happen because it is no longer a ground...... and the one exhaust bolt you had to use a 16 on was from the previous person to take apart you say, but you previously took it apart lol. And if you take the manifold off all the way it will gain you so much more access. And every time you remove something especially exhaust, you always replace the gaskets no matter what.... hope this is of help to anyone who reads it.

My husband and son-in-laws replaced the starter and now it will crank but not start. They got it to start after messing with it a bunch and moved it before starting to replace the starter. Now they can’t figure out what is causing it to not start. Before it would just click every time you would try to start it and if you were lucky it would start up after so many tries, now after replacing the starter it cranks but will not start at all.

The reason you are having to change the starter for the second time is probably because you are using rebuilt parts from Auto Zone. I have been a mechanic for over 50 years and I am a federally licensed, USAF trained, FAA, air frame and engine, aircraft mechanic. I tried Auto Zone for a short time when they first came to my area near New Orleans. I had changed an alternator and two starters from Auto Zone. All three of them went out in 3 to 6 months. They did swap them out under warranty but the labor time to replace them was not covered. So I did some research and at that time I discovered they only repaired cores vs actually rebuilding or remanufacturing them. The difference is in rebuilding or remanufacturing a core, is that, ALL wear and electronic parts are replaced with new parts and the component meets new OEM specifications. For example a reman alternator will use only the two case halves and the armature. All the bearings or bushings and electronics are replaced with new ones. I have never seen an armature go bad unless the internal parts were tearing up. I only saw that happen once, due to a bearing coming apart in an alternator. When using reman parts I only use NAPA, and have never had to replace any of their parts reman parts. They may cost more but are well worth it.

Only things I have to do was a new water pump and thermostat housing gasket, a #3 coil, new plugs, new battery, new struts and outer tie rods, and sway bar links. Hopefully it goes much longer without any issues. Don’t let it get you down. I try and not worry about it but it’s hard. I have done a lot of the repairs myself and I’m no expert by no means. NEVER!! Buy starters and alternaters or fuel pumps from autozone or any of these side companies. If you can take the original one that you have taken off of your vehicle and have it rebuilt with superior replacements and that thing will last you another 200,000 miles but I warn you AutoZone advanced auto O’Reillys all of them will have you stranded in the middle of nowhere when you purchase their electrical parts simply because all of them pretty much buy their inferior parts from the same place. I learned this from a top technician. You cannot have the fuel pump rebuilt, but the alternator and starter you can and if there is not any such company around you that does this work I prefer you to go to the dealership. Yes, the part will cost you more, but you will get your original part with superior Quality made components inside. Imagine you and your family stranded on some back road in the middle of nowhere in the freezing cold all because you decided to go cheap and buy from the side companies AutoZone advance auto parts O’Reillys auto parts. I warn you… have your part rebuilt or go to the dealership and get that part.
