So much knowledge and general track nerdiness on display here, it's a treat listening to both of you!

I appreciate the point about times regarding the era. Was debating with a friend about Allyson Felix the other day who kept trying to argue she wasn’t that fast compared to the times today. The reality is that she absolutely dominated the 200m for a stretch of time. The only female athlete with 3 World Championship gold in the 200m-in 2007, she won by the biggest margin ever at a world championship.
Also, Julian Alfred all-day. 🙌🏿 And I believe Britton Wilson (who has the 400m collegiate record and indoor American record) would’ve won more titles if she hadn’t ran the 400m/400m hurdles double with so little recovery time.

Julien Alfred has to be top of the pile. Dominant!

I love the collaboration! I'm going Alfred. She also pitched in on 4x400s when needed.

good point on her contributions to the 4x400

Julien Alfred is the greatest, IMHO, for her prowess in the short sprints and unmatched 60m consistency. Now, not for the sake of trolling, REALLY NOT, I feel that Steiner is over-hipped do to her skin color. I honestly feel this, and I hope I'm not offending anybody.

Respect to Duncan. She was really special but Alfred was to be the one. She dominated and was unbeaten and set records. There's no denying she is the GOAT of women's sprinting in the NCAA.

Why are you guys stuck on the most recent sprinters since the 2000s, what about the 80s and 90s sprinters. Dawn Sowell held both outdoor sprint records for nearly 30 years when she won both 100m and 200m at the 1989 NCAA Champs

    • @TheFinalLeg
      @TheFinalLeg  16 днів тому

Its just a discussion about the past decade. If we went back through history, yes Dawn Sowell would be right in the conversation as the greatest sprinter along with others like:
      Dawn Sowell (LSU)
      Florence Griffith Joyner (UCLA)
      Merlene Ottey (Nebraska)
      Angela Williams (USC)
      Sanya Richards (Texas)

The only right answer is Julien Alfred and 2nd I’ll give to Abby Steiner

Interesting so you have Abby ahead of Kimberlyn Duncan?
      Duncan won:
      2011 - indoor & outdoor 200m titles, 2nd place outdoor 100m
      2012 - indoor & outdoor 200m titles, 2nd place outdoor 100m
      2013 - indoor & outdoor 200m titles, 3rd place outdoor 100m
So 3 consecutive titles indoors, 3 consecutive titles outdoors, a few top-3 finishes in the 100m and she also ran times of:
      - 10.96 - #3 in NCAA history back in 2012
      - 22.19 - #2 in NCAA history back in 2012

The idea of only using wind converted times, respectfully, sounds terrible to me.
    1. It makes the sport feel even less intuitive and accessible to new fans who will all need to be introduced to the concept. In general, the more we complicate the least complicated sport in history (foot racing), the less people will be interested.
    2. Contrary to popular belief, not all athletes receive the same benefit from the same wind. This is primarily because wind resistance is based on cross-sectional area, and cross sectional area scales with more closely with height rather than weight/mass, which increases faster than cross-sectional area as height increases. In essence, what this means is that smaller athletes will be more affected by wind than larger ones. There is no wind calculator that adjust for these factors, and there is not good enough data to perfectly account for them. As it already stands, many wind conversion calculators still differ.
