This is a masterpiece. And only 943 views. Our world doesn't care for masterpieces. Heartbreaking --over and over. Whittle is a angel sent by God. A tale of redemption, very very hard won. A man whose character flaws caused tragedy after tragedy and who struggled to the very end to change and find redemption.

You get it right at the end as he did! Making rash decisions is on part with sweeping statements about who loves masterpieces and what exactly that is. Hardy had his detractors in his day. The fault is in the educational systems that fail to teach literature, parents that are functionally illiterate or the educated ones who are aliterate, and most urgently, now, the social media that does not encourage but rather undermines reading. Americans are particularly anti intellectual. The election of Obama , a learned person was a complete and possibly one time anomaly. Recent events underscore the effects of unthinking and unfeeling masses of people in low, middle and high places. So, there is no” people don’t love masterpieces.” People make mistakes and many are coarsened by their experiences and exploited by their betters. . Descend from your high perch and you may find more people on the ground looking up wanting more from life than up there with you looking down.

I just found out about it. :) I was only familiar with Hardy's work, Far from the Maddening Crowd. Loved that one. It brought me here.

When I first read "The Mayor of Casterbridge" by Thomas Hardy when I was a girl I fell in love with the poignant world of Hardy's pastoral England and his characters in this bittersweet story. I was enchanted and went on to read his other works.
This story is so full of the beauty and pain of life, and the goodness and woundedness in man. But what I love most is its setting. Victorian England and its rural life of harvests and market, bowers and rolling meadows and its simple folks.

I agree thomas hardy knew how to add suffering redemption loss such depths to his works , unlike jane austen who writings were rather tame and whitty

It's an amazing movie and so beautifully Hardy portrayes every character especially Henchard's character in the novel like his ups and downs so much similar to Macbeth. However Henchard is the cathartic character as well!!👍

I authentically say that Lucetta weaves around Farfrae a kind of attraction
    Open flirt with dirt look
No doubt he fell for her charm ignoring innocence and good natured love of Jane

This is so full of angst...complicated feelings and even more complicated relations.
Elizabeth liked Farfrae but he married another, that is kind of what reality is...love is not a one day affair.
Farfrae loved Lucette but he was unable to accept her flaws.
    People aren't perfect.
Elizabeth married Farfrae in the end accepting his flaws. She serves as a person to go by her own morals.

Life and death of this man remind me of Judah Iscariot who betrayed Jesus, he changed his mind about what he did, but did a lot of wrong and finally could not accept God s forgiveness.

I have never read Thoma Hardy, but the subjects are caught in the social/moral straitjacket of his time reminded me of Theodor Fontane, who whose main characters are women, though. What surprised me was that Henchard's character doesn't really develop. He oscillates flickering empathy or emotion only when it is socially acceptable. But he is evil through and through. Even his last will and testament shows neither insight nor remorse, Denying himself a burial and the associated rites, he spits in the face of those people who showed empathy and offered a helping hand to him even though he repeatedly bit and clawed at them to ensure their ruin every time.
