- The No. 21 Duke Blue Devils held off a hard-fighting Hofstra Pride in the two teams' first-ever meeting, 89-68. Kyle Filipowski had an incredible game, finishing with a game-high 28 points on 10-16 shooting, including 4-7 from three-point range. The big man also grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out 8 assists and blocked 3 shots in the win. As a team, Jon Scheyer's club assisted on 22 of their 33 made field goals and won the points in the paint battle over head coach Speedy Claxton's Pride 40-16.
Great win for Duke, also full credit to Hofstra because they played a great game and have some shooters on that team. Hofstra definitely looks like a tournament team. Dukes gotta keep working on getting some things better but definitely a quality win over a goid team. Lets Go Duke 🏀
Dubar on Hofstra was ballin tonight
Lets go duke they did great ball movement great shots and filipowski had a great game. That is a great player right there. Almost a triple double for him. Accomplish your dreams and keep trying if you want to go to duke or anywhere. GO DUKE #1 hope this helps. Pls like
Thats how Duke rolls. Much better ball movement and sharing the basketball. 3 point shooting was what we all have been expecting to see from the guys all season. Everything just opens up so much when the shots are falling. Defensively we are still kind of all over the place.I kept yelling at Sheyer through my tv for some full-court pressure and finally he had them start to pressure the ball which definitely changed Hofstra's comfort level but Sheyer didn't have Duke stick with the pressure, it was a here and there thing and i don't really get that because we all seen that just allowing Hofstra to slowly bring the ball up while the offense got set in their positions was allowing them to be comfortable and get wide open shots versus when Duke applied full court pressure and made it harder to set up because other players had to come back to help the point guard when he was trapped and had to pass the ball. I mean its common sense that the more uncomfortable you can make your opponent the better. I also have to give credit to Hofstra because even though they did get way to many wide open looks they also knocked down more than a couple of tough jumpers and heavily defended shots, for a little while those guys couldn't miss. Dukes offense was much better all around, defense has a lot of work still to do. Im hoping Jaylen Blakes energy and tenacity will spread throughout the team because that dude brings the energy every second of every game. I'd love to know why Sean Stewart isn't getting but 2 or 3 minutes a game still, i feel like he is being wasted sitting on the bench, the guy is a great rebounder(reminder he broke Zion Williamsons vertical jumping Duke record) with his jumping abilities, this kid is a lob waiting to happen plus he can shoot and get to the basket and also a decent defender, hopefully he and Powers start getting more game action. I bleed Duke Blue and this team has some work still to do but i have complete confidence in coach sheyer and the players that they will get there. Ok complete honesty this team has a ways to go to be 1 of the best in the country but i fully believe they have the coaches and the players to reach that height. Lets Go Duke!
Kyle Flipowski was probably the best player in college basketball as a freshman last year! Duke holds him back by trying to "spread the ball around." So, Duke has made him a very good complimentary player. If he plays the entire game facing the basket on offense, nothing could be better for Duke's opponents. Keep playing him out at the three-point line, away from offensive rebounds, and free throw chances! LOL.
Dukes not holding Kyle back. Dude is a really good player but has Big weaknesses, I love flip and definitely support him and the team but to say Duke is holding him back is ridiculous. I agree that having flip out guarding on the 3 point line is bad because as we've seen he consistently gets blown past by guards to the basket but Kyle also doesn't have the power or strength to play man to man against guys his size or bigger than him, we've absolutely seen Kyle get manhandled by guys stronger than him. His defense is very good and he's pretty slow and that's why most of his blocks come when he helps or doubles up on another player, he blocks best from the side or by coming from behind. Kyle is much better on offense than defense but he definitely struggles at times there as well, he commits a lot of turnovers because he still continues to hold the ball down low at times, or he tries to drive to the basket which 9 out of 10 times turns into a turnover or an ugly missed layup attempt, he tends to get frustrated easily and makes bad choices and will also at times turn into a ball hog and make the decision of taking on 2 or 3 defenders and missing instead of throwing to a wide-open teammate. I love Kyle and the team and Duke is trying to play through Kyle to get the team playing better, I mean we can't win if Kyle's the only 1 scoring, there has to be chemistry and playing inside out helps open up down low for Kyle tremendously if Duke can start knocking down 3s consistently like last night against Hofstadter, Duke starting hitting 3s and all of a sudden the lane wasn't clogged up with players, Mark Mitchell has been dared by other teams to shoot a 3, he will have the ball and they will leave him wide open on purpose because they want him to shoot and that leaves Kyle double teamed down low. You see the thing about Kyle is he isn't a true center and he's not a forward either. He isn't strong enough to bang down low with the big guys and he isn't fast enough to drive past defenders. To say Duke is holding Kyle back is ridiculous, if Duke didn't play flip the way they are then all his weaknesses and flaws would stand out 100 times worse. I mean just think about how many times you've seen kyle under the basket with the ball and your saying jump up and dunk it dude but instead he throws up a layuo that clangs of the glass and then rolls of the rim, most big guys absolutely would just dunk it but kyle normally doesn't do that until he gets frustrated and mad and then he will muscle up a 2 hand jam but then immediately go right back to missing layups. In the Arkansas game Duke went 13-30 on layups, i repeat 13-30 on layups, they missed 17 layups and guess who helped that stat be so bad?yes flip(also mark Mitchell).Point is Kyle is a really good player and definitely can get much better, Duke is doing everything to help him get better and also help hide some of his weaknesses. Fact is Mitchell at 6'9" defends down low better than 7' Filipowski and that's why they have flip out but that is absolutely something I agree with you on and it's not working because Kyle can't stay in front of a guard and to keep watching them blow right past him is starting to drive me insane. Kyle has work to do and this entire team has a lot of work to do before they have any chance of doing anything special this season. Nobody is afraid to play Duke right now... But they will be
DStone Dubar is him
You know Filipowski going in the first round, maybe top 5.
Why cant we play all teams like this?
Honestly we didn't play that great. Defense was still very bad for most of the game, it was wide open shot after wide open shot for Hofstra until late in the 2nd half. Offensively that's what we want every single game, except for the missed layups, I really don't understand why or how Mark Mitchell and flip are missing so many layups but anyways other than that the offense was great and the shooting was fantastic, Dukes defense still needs a ton of work, way to many open shots and our guys making mistakes allowing Hofstra to easy baskets. The defense has to get much much much better or we will never be able to compete with the best teams in the country. I mean Duke didn't actually finally pull away and seal the victory until late in the 2nd half of the game, Hofstra is a decent team but this Duke team at its best would have put Hofstra away in the 1st half. Duke is getting better though and that's what matters. Let's Go Duke!
