  • In this video, I’ll share with you my favorite oil painting medium formulation and how to make it DIY in less than a minute! I also discuss the five reasons why I like it so much more than the hundreds of other recipes out there. Stay until the end to hear my four-legged studio assistant’s big announcement.
Caution: Stand oil is actually linseed oil and does oxidize. In case you spill stand oil, be sure any stand oil soaked rags are kept away from oxygen to prevent spontaneous combustion!
This is the second video in a series called “Chemistry for Artists”. These mini-lessons are meant for intermediate and advanced oil painters who want to understand their medium at a deeper level. I took a lot of chemistry/science classes at the university. It’s only been since I graduated that I’ve learned oil painting…this video series is my attempt to merge my science training with my passion.

@@TirySalgadoFineArt not really. In the mid of tests and exams for a requalification process. Alarm clock is set for 3:30 am on Sa and Su...
Painting would certainly be more fun but has to wait a few more weeks ;-)

Thank you for the video - I enjoyed the discussion although I'm interested in solvent-free oil painting. I was admiring your wooden palettes hanging on the wall, a beautiful and functional arrangement. Would you consider making a studio tour video?

Awesome!!! Solvent-free is where I’d like to go someday. I’m curious what you use as solvent free medium?
Yes! A studio tour would be great fun! But won’t happen until winter because I’m in the middle of plein air season and my studio is a literal dump right now! 😅
