Thanks for sharing this! A fine rifle in a great caliber and some words of wisdom. It looks like things are coming together with that heavy load. Enjoy!
45-70 is a great round. I like the Hornady 325FTX round when I hunt. Playing around with reloading for the 45-70. It does get the job done. Good luck with the upcoming season. The sunset is beautiful. 10 Cow Ranch is a great channel also,
The Browning guns are slick as glass. I have an original Winchester in 40-82 I shoot a custom 350 gr bullet by Accurate molds. I won't disclose my load but I use IMR4198 and get around 1850 fps. It is good for most north american game. The 45-70 is older than dirt but still gets it done. Don't pay any attention to the bad comments and do what is comfortable for you. Enjoy your rifle. Limbsaver makes a very good slip on recoil pad. Check them out they really help. Very sorry for the loss of your father and father in law. If you keep them in your heart and mind they will always be with you. Need to get used to that second load. It is a winner...
Well BB I gotta say I'm jealous. When you pulled up that beautiful 1886 I had instant drool! Keep working on it and you'll master it. I suspect that maybe it's your loadings rather than your ability. Ever try a tang sight? God bless.
That's a beautiful rifle. I've had a couple Marlin 1895's along the way. At 63, my eyes aren't very good with irons these days, and I've let the last 1895 go, and picked up a CVA Scout 45-70, that I've put a 1-6X scope on. I need to get it zero'd. Kind of waiting for the end of fire season. I don't want to be the guy who sets the countryside on fire....(grin). Enjoyed the vid, thanks for sharing!
I have thought about a Marlin and putting a low power scope on it for woods hunting. The one I want is the 22 inch round barrel and they are pretty hard to find . Thanks for watching
I know how you feel about recoil. I’ m 76 now and will not shoot anything more than 30-06 reduced recoil loads anymore. In fact, my whitetail gun is a 6MM Remington. Good luck hunting this and every year. I appreciate your honesty which you always provide on this channel. Also, having lost both my parents and in-laws, please accept my sincere condolences.
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 You are correct, the 6MM is a great deer cartridge. Our central N.Y. 2 year old and up bucks generally dress out 140 to 180 lbs. Hit them in boiler room area with a 100 grain hand load soft point and they go 40 to 50 yards and drop. Thanks for the kind reply.
@@henryslater8029 my son‘s new wife is going to go deer hunting for the first time this year. We have her set up with a two 4300 grain Southpoint bullet. I think it’s the Remington core lock if settled on that is the ideal cartridge for recoil, sensitive shooters or new shooters, good luck on your hunt this year
I didn't use my lead sled for very long when I realized, hey there's something wrong here. I kept it around for other people to use but finally sold it. I lay a leather glove across the owl ear bag on my front pedestal rest for those guns with narrow forearms. Cuts down on the "wobble". 😊 Thanks!
That's a really nice rifle. If you have a way to support your rifle while you're standing, it helps with the recoil. I'm not an expert, but I've reloaded, and shot a 45-70 quiet a bit. I have settled on 3031 powder. 55 grains behind a 350 grain cast bullet has worked well for me. I get right at 1800 fps and good accuracy. With a 400 grain cast with a gas check, I use 48 grains and get about 1600 fps. You should get a good bit more velocity from that longer barrel. That benchmark load looks good though.
Hi Chris, you should get a slip on recoil pad. Even if it’s just for range shooting. If you develop a flinch, it won’t help your accuracy. I have a Henry Big Boy Steel in 45-70 and it’s a great gun. It also has a factory recoil pad. (Thank goodness) I cast and load my own ammo and shoot both 350 grain and 405 grain bullets. The 405’s @ 1600 fps have plenty of energy for anything in North America. I have some Hornady Lever Revolution ammo and I have let my buddies shoot the gun with some of that and they only want to shoot it once! LOL.
I have used a slip on pad a little but with the crescent but plate it doesn't fit very well. I am sure it does help some. I thought about fitting some foam in the but plate to make it square and then putting on the slip on pad. Any Ideas?? The 405 gr bullet load you have sounds pretty stout !!!
@@chrisevansgunshorsesranchi699 Get yourself one of those garden kneeling pads and cut a “D” shaped piece the size and shape of the butt plate on your rifle to fill in the void. Then slip the recoil pad over it. Those garden pads are fairly dense foam and should work pretty well.
You are not a wimp. The 45-70 is a very unpleasant rifle for me to shoot. It is very expensive too. I love looking at the Henry brass frame models but I think I might some pimp traits in my DNA. But, I’m not spending a grand to get beat up…..but they are very cool.
I don't know what the threshold is, but in my experience the faster the cast bullet goes the less accurate it is. My Browning 86 Carbine and Rifle slings 300gr Remington JHP's really well. Cast bullets don't seem to be as accurate in them.
Beautiful skies.
Also, beautiful sunset, and condolences for your loss of family.
Thanks
