Native Rhode Islander here and you totally covered almost everything that makes the state great! I didn't realize that other states had ocean water that wasn't freezing lol. Definitely agree with Waterfire and Block Island especially. Only things I'd add for anyone curious about RI: the cliff walk in Newport offers some great ocean views and it's right by one of the beaches. Public transit is absolutely terrible, so don't plan to rely on that. Even if you catch a bus, the drivers have a death wish. Also, everything legally has to close at 2AM (1AM if you're outside of Newport or Providence), so don't plan to stay out drinking all night. Just go to Olneyville NY System when the bars close. Oh, and don't come here in the winter. Most of Newport is closed, the streets are full of snow, and all of the best events are outside in the summer. Awesome to see our small state get some love!
Thanks for the trip back. Lived in Barrington RI for a year in 6th grade.. On my bucket list to return. The Cliff Walk was awesome then too.. Nothing like coffee milk way back then.

The water isn’t that cold in RI unless you show up too early in the season. The water is fine in most of southern New England. Head north of Boston, then the water gets wicked cold
In August and September open water beach temps are low to mid 70's F, in the bay 75-80 F and we see manatees barracuda and colorful tropical fish at that time of year. In May, June and July the water is very cold unless you're swimming in the bay. Kids never seem to care what the temp is.

Haha, from Rhode Island, that whole area of Fall River, New Bedford has a huge Portuguese population, a lot from the Azores. New Bedford has the Madeira Feast which imports wine from the Madeira Islands.

I spent my first 15 summers at Matunuck, including hurricane Carol when I was 4 years old. My father loved surf casting, we dug clams, raked quahogs, and picked mussels from the rocks. We practically lived on free seafood. After cleaning the fish my dad would give me a few heads and I would walk to the salt pond with a hand line and net to catch Blue Crabs. We always went to see the tuna that was caught in the annual tournament at Galilee. Georges, Aunt Carries, Kenyons corn meal, Dels lemonade, Eclipse coffee syrup, and NY System hot wieners so many good memories. It was a great time to grow up.
LOL native Rhode Islander here and #1 had me rolling! We certainly have our own way of driving! LOL I will admit my mom and I have a saying "Let's show them how we do it in Rhody" before blowing past or generally outpacing drivers in other states... for such a small state we sure do have it ingrained in our heads to hurry! Great video!
Native Newporter here. Born and raised. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful places on planet earth. That said, it’s not all sunshine and mansions. It’s like There’s 3 different cities in one square mile.
As a native Rhode islander i want to thank you for this great video! You are correct RI is an awesome state. I'm half way through the video so incase you missed it Jamestown is another great place. And if you like saltwater fishing it's also great to just hang on the beach and fish for stripers!! Thanks again.
Ya got to try the Rhode Island clam chowder (clear broth), with clam cakes on the side, you dip the cakes into the chowder broth...omg !! Also, try Federal Hill (pronounced Fed'ral Hill) for Italian food, in northern part of Providence. Chourico pizza...every pizza parlor carries it! ps the best view, is just coming onto the Sakonnet River Bridge from Tiverton, with the vista of Sakonnet River, Narragansett Bay, and all three bridges...daytime it's beautifully breath taking, but at night on a holiday, with all the bridges lit up...stunning !
RI native here still living in the state! Awesome video! I just wanted to chime in. I would recommend people to visit Late Spring-Fall, the best being Summer if you're into Beaches. Our roads can be really bad lol, there are lot of potholes around so be aware. The water isn't cold in the summer months. Believe me if it's 85 degrees plus out and you go to a beach, most people will be in the water and it's going to be plenty warm. The weather in New England can be very erratic though, so the best chance to get some good beach time would be to come in July-August. People surf all the time; I boogie board and body surf personally :D. Block island is really interesting and whether you want to bike, hike, or even party there's pretty much everything for everyone there. As for food here in Rhode Island, it's pretty great. I loved how Wolter talks about the Portuguese food here as well because there are some amazing restaurants especially in EP and of course there's Federal Hill for Italian food. I also love the food on Thayer St, one of my favorite Indian Restaurants is there and one of the best Peruvian restaurants Los Andes, is also in Providence. I might be bias, but you can find high quality restaurants in a lot of the other towns, I'm from Bristol, and there are tons of different restaurants here and nearby in Warren that are highly coveted! Also more important than clam cakes and clams here is to get a stuffie or a stuffed quahog. It's basically clam but stuffed with a bunch of seasonings and they're really good. There's also a lot of great Pizza places throughout the state and a ton of really good ice cream spots around, and you can't forget Iggy's for doughboys and their food in general. If you're into hiking and birdwatching, RI has some great parks for you. There are state parks all over and plenty of biking and hiking paths, so it really is a great outdoor state. It's a hidden gem and a place I've grown to appreciate over the years!!!
Take a stroll down Benefit Street in Providence to enjoy beautifully maintained colonial homes, enjoy the RISD museum as mentioned, and also walk the quirky alternative Thayer Street for people watching. Definitely RI-style clam chowder, which is not thick like Boston style. And I would add pizza strips (Sicilian pizza) for the food list. If you haven't had a quick "coffee regulah" at Dunkin', you're missing it.
Clam cakes and chowder in Galilee. NY System Hot Wieners in Providence. Party pizza/pizza strips at D. Palmieri's in Johnston. Great Italian food in Federal Hill. Del's Lemonade. Coffee Milk. Bismarks at West's Bakery in Hope Valley. Middle of Nowhere Diner in Exeter. All things I'd recommend trying while visiting here ❤
I live in Rhode Island and I don't live that far in Newport County and yes Ocean Drive is very beautiful and I love being over there because it cause my mental and just looking at the scenery of the mansions and everything certain things you can do out here I never been to Block Island yet but thank you for explaining about the state Rhode Island I've been living here for almost a decade
If you have New England roots, many may be in Rhode Island. I have several lines from there after a couple generations in the Boston/Plymouth area. Little Compton, Tiverton, Newport and Portsmouth are often mentioned.

I love my RI. I have moved out of it for years for my spouses jobs and I didn’t realize how different the other states made me miss my real home. I built a home in RI knowing I would always come back home were I am now here to stay. XOXOXOXO
Thanks for the update. I used to live in Rhode Island, I went to Navy OCS there in 1970 from May to September. By far the best time of year to be there. And I lived there again 1973-1974 so I know a "few" things may have changed since then. One thing that impressed me as to how small it was, on my trips to Providence I would drive though Fall River, MA on my way. I always liked seafood, but I became a true seafood-lover while living there. Mmmm getting hungry right now thinking about crabs, clams, lobster, the fish and of course the chowder, that red stuff now longer exists for me.
I am completing my visit to RI tommorow and wanted to say thank you for the excellent videos that you did on Ct and RI they were really helpful and informative. I look forward to using some of your European tourist videos one day
WoW, the young boy with the FIFA World Cup T-Shirt rooting for my new country of Brazil eating at a Portuguese Restaurant in East Providence, where I grew up. 5 Stars.
You've just convinced me to add Rhode Island to my mental list of places to visit in the US. Hopefully, in a few years, when the mortgage is paid and our son has finished university, we can start thinking about coming.
Thanx for the video I was born and raised in Rhode Island, but I moved to Brazil last year. Unfortunately I have lots of stuff in storage in RI. and cant wait to go back and get it, but I have to wait for my Brazilian Permanent Residency by Spouse to go thru first. Your video made me even more anxious to get to R.I.
Lived in RI in the sixties. Providence a smudge to the north ( pre air pollution prevention) and Narragansett bay was three houses down at the end of the road. Great childhood memories. Moved to NY and the kids thought I was from a foreign country because of my accent.
I noticed at the end of the video you said "Rhode Island and Providence Plantations" but actually there was a referendum on election day 2020 and Providence Plantations was dropped from the name. People failed to understand that plantation meant a colonial settlement in this case and not a large farm, so people thought it was controversial and wanted to remove it.
Yeah, it refers to a non slave owning place (in RI). But the word plantation is so freighted, surely we can adapt. I mean I would guess something like 2/3rds of Rhode Islanders didn’t even know the longer name.
Thanks for the video, as a native Rhode Islander I enjoyed seeing your take on the state. we used to drive over the border into CT for cheaper gas, so I’m not sure that cheaper gas in RI is necessarily true.. A visit to Wright’s Dairy Farm is where to go for the best coffee milk!
CT raised its gas tax, so gas is now cheaper in both RI and MA than CT. I grew up in Connecticut and we'd always try to wait to buy has in Rhode Island when we went.
Gas in RI is about 20 to 25 cents cheaper than CT now. Thats on the border stations, closer to Providence it's about 30 cents cheaper. Ct is about as expensive as you can get in New England.
Interesting about the gas prices. Didn't notice that when we drove through in October with our rental car, but maybe we should have topped off while we were there
The driving experience is definitely due to the Massachusetts drivers… I’ve lived in almost all of the northeast states and the Massholes are the absolute WORST. I find RI drivers to be EXCELLENT drivers…they are just extra nice and courteous. They obey traffic signs, they use their blinkers and they move over.
Take this opinion with a grain of salt as I have only lived in RI for a year but I’ve found RI drivers to be nice but quite bad and dangerous if that makes sense.
Federal Hill in Providence is the place for Italian food. Broadway productions touring the country often start here. There's something primeval about Waterfire that sticks with you forever.
I was born and raised in Connecticut for 31 years of my life. I now am 58 years old and live in South Carolina. That being said, Rhode Island is a completely different state. I love it. I love visiting it. Yet, I still love Connecticut. And i love South Carolina. Mind that, Connecticutians are different than Rhode Islanders. Kinda like North Carolinians and South Carolinians are. We are all proud of our own state.
I enjoy watching all your travel videos and you gave some great advice about visiting Rhode Island and I am following most of it and enjoying myself here, but when you talked about the drivers here I didn’t take you seriously but as it turns out you were not joking. I live in northwest Indiana close to Chicagoland and I thought I had experienced the worst examples of driving but these Rhode Islanders have taken it to a whole new level.
Great video, I'd just like to add onr of the best things about Rhode Island is all of the restaurants you can travel too via your own boat and dock it at the restaurant. Blounts Clam Shack for instance.
I grew up and still live in Rhode Island, it's so beautiful. The Ocean is magnificent, it looks like you are on Vacation when you live here. We have Hammersmith Farms where JFK and Jackie got Married. Oh and Taylor Swift has a home. Sometimes she out on here paddle board. ❤😊
Life long Rhode Islander here, I have been all over the world and Block Island is one of the best places for me! The Bluffs are like the Bahamas of RI. Absolutely amazing!
Ive lived in Westerly for 30 years and each year has gotten worse with traffic especially summer but continues into Fall until the weather gets cold. So over crowded, if you aren't interested in swimming Id recommend off season to explore RI.
I've lived all over the country, and RI for 4 years. I've only gotten into 2 accidents ever...both in those 4 years. One person didn't understand he needs to stop at a stop sign, and the other ran into the side of my car in a traffic jam. They do not even seem to know the very basics of driving...
Using a turn signal(otherwise known as a blinka in RI slang terms), is very rare. I used to live in Connecticut but find the driving in RI to be much worse.
Driving on Airport Rd. in Warwick is a master class on how bad Rhode Island drivers are. No, they do not know even the basics. RI drivers are best described as ignorance coupled with aggression-the perfect combination!
😆 🤣 Love it Forgot that coffee milk is not so common every where else. I grew up in Newport. Used to jump off the rocks around ocean drive. Bridge going to Goat Island used to be the best spot for squid fishing. Great video. But love the Florida weather now better. Yes the Portuguese food is incredible. 😆 Always could make an easy 20 bucks at the bar betting on what State has the longest name. 🙄 🤙😁
Lmao it's definitely the potholes, I live in RI and while there are *a lot* of bad drivers, we're only bad because we're wicked angry about the potholes. But for real I feel my soul leave my body on some of these *main roads and highways* 🥸 Edit: I failed to lump myself in with the bad drivers. I'm definitely one of the bad drivers.
The cold water is definitely true but less of a problem later in summer, if you're here in late August or early September the sun might not be beating down as hard but the water will be more temperate
As a fellow Rhode Warrior, spot on with caw--fee milk and hot weiners (hot weiners are the ultimate drunk-people food when everything closes down). Dunks is life out here (like seriously, people go bat-shit without it). If you find yourself in Warwick or 'Gannsett, get yourself some Iggys (I grew up on Warwick Iggys). Ocean State Job Lot has just about anything you need. Winters suck balls because one day it'll be 50-60 degrees out and the next day your be getting 3-7 inches of snow. I would like my straw please and thanks. It's true what they say: we got plenty of lobstas and mobstas (well, maybe just a lot of lobstas). Welp, gotta go pahk da cah.
I mean if you visit RI, the food is crazy good. Pretty much everything else is a "oh that's nifty" type deal and you move on. I grew up on the east coast and much prefer places like NH and Maine over RI if you visit. Less people more New England the more North East you go.
Coffee Awful Awful! The true mark of a Rhode Islander. Edit: I know this is an old video, but I just have to say that my dad grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts, and if you haven't been there, there's a HUGE Portugese population and lots of Portugese restaurants. Just FYI. It's overlooked because it's a very working class town and not on the train line to Boston (though it soon will be again, I think) so not a lot of people visit.
I was shocked to find for such a small state the clam chowder is different in the south than the north LOL. If you are a Wes Anderson fan visit Fort Wetherill State Park on Jamestown Island to see the Moonrise Kingdom and explore the old fort. There is a great bookstore in Providence called Symposium Books. It seems a lot of RISD students resell their textbooks there and there are interesting titles on art and design. Grab a drink ocean side at the Ocean Mist.

As a native Rhode islander i want to thank you for this great video! You are correct RI is an awesome state. I'm half way through the video so incase you missed it Jamestown is another great place.
And if you like saltwater fishing it's also great to just hang on the beach and fish for stripers!! Thanks again.
Hey, I live in Rhode Island. Cumberland, Rhode Island.
CLEAR chowder is the BEST chowder !!!
Brenton Point has free parking and it's beautiful there. Lots of flying kites in summer to see too at Brenton Point State park!
All things I'd recommend trying while visiting here ❤
Palmieris is the absolute best.
I practically grew up in Providence and East Providence. The Portuguese food is kick ass there with an Azorean flair.
If you have New England roots, many may be in Rhode Island. I have several lines from there after a couple generations in the Boston/Plymouth area. Little Compton, Tiverton, Newport and Portsmouth are often mentioned.
Thanks for featuring RI including a lot of great footage of my town, Westerly. ☺️
When did you film this? My husband and I noticed that some things are now different.
Glad to hear I’m not the only one who hates coffee. Never had coffee milk either
Sorry Em, but it is just you and the host of this vid. Every other person on this planet we call Earth LOVES coffee.
I too have not tried coffee milk
@@lechanneldemysterieuxmante1807
(: I think you will like "Coffee Milk", and "One of the best things on this Planet is" ... "Coffee"!!!!! ... ☺ (There may not be any in the future!!!!! 😢)
(: "Coffee Milk" is very good ... ☺ You won't get the strong coffee taste ... Maybe you don't like coffee because you never drank a real good cup of coffee ... like "Instant Coffee" is nothing close to a good cup of coffee!!!!! ... ☺
born and raised here, I think you did a great job!
I watched your videos before I went to Jamaica. Native Rhode Islander great video especially about the drivers lol.
Where'd you move to?
@@jonathanleak7263 I moved back home to NJ. I am 40 minutes from the ocean. So I still get excellent seafood.
As a native Rhode Islander....you got everything right. Especially the traffic. ESPECIALLY the traffic....
The Scituate art festival is awesome. 100% recommend it!
I am completing my visit to RI tommorow and wanted to say thank you for the excellent videos that you did on Ct and RI they were really helpful and informative. I look forward to using some of your European tourist videos one day
Hit the Ocean Mist for an amazing Brunch, a Bloody Mary, or A Coffee with Love . Easily the best time to come to RI is the Summer.
Native Rhode Islander here, spot on video!
You are the best! Watched other videos and your videos are always the best! So many ideas!
Thank you for the great review.
RI is it's own little world.. Oh food to try Woonsocket Dynamites.
Thank you! Can’t to go again and see more!
You really the ocean water in RI is cold. Try swimming in the Ocean on NH coast.
People failed to understand that plantation meant a colonial settlement in this case and not a large farm, so people thought it was controversial and wanted to remove it.
still there they have not removed it thank god
Yeah, I voted against dropping that; "Smallest state with the longest name!" no more
Thanks to polical correctness, we're no longer the smallest state with the biggest name
@@andrew_ray I did not realize that, I haven’t lived in RI for 10 years so I guess times have changed! 😄
Gas in RI is about 20 to 25 cents cheaper than CT now. Thats on the border stations, closer to Providence it's about 30 cents cheaper. Ct is about as expensive as you can get in New England.
save a trip -buy a bottle of autocrat coffee syrup and make your own for a tenth of the price of wrights farms
I've had the BEST ramen there and I live in LA where there are plenty of delicious ramen places 🙌🏼
That being said,
Rhode Island is a completely different state.
I love it.
I love visiting it.
Yet, I still love Connecticut.
And i love South Carolina.
Mind that,
Connecticutians are different than Rhode Islanders.
Kinda like North Carolinians and South Carolinians are.
We are all proud of our own state.
THAT'S MY STATE! We're very concentrated
Concentrated but not mindful... 😉
I haven't seen a travel advisor so constantly obsessed by food, and eating.
(: I have ... ☺
Point judith is also a good place to go
Awesome 👍😎 small state with a big heart. Love going there.
Water warms up,like anywhere else
I enjoy watching all your travel videos and you gave some great advice about visiting Rhode Island and I am following most of it and enjoying myself here, but when you talked about the drivers here I didn’t take you seriously but as it turns out you were not joking. I live in northwest Indiana close to Chicagoland and I thought I had experienced the worst examples of driving but these Rhode Islanders have taken it to a whole new level.
That is 2 different levels of hell driving my friend. They both suck :)
Very accurate....Burrrillville RI resident!
I love watching videos like this cause it’s like….. you guys don’t have clam cakes elsewhere???????????
Beaver tail is beautiful all 4 seasons.
Well done! Thank you.
Coffee ice cream is another one. Try asking for that anywhere west of Hartford, CT.
Awesome video
Rohde Island is a unit of measurement. "you can fit three Rohde Islands on that glacier"
that's funny, and so true :)
Part of the cliff walk eroded and collapsed about a week ago. You can still walk most of it, though.
Oh No ... 😢
I'm new to this channel& looking here my lifelong residence is featured ✊
I teased my cousin that my county is almost twice the size of Rhode island
Lmao it's definitely the potholes, I live in RI and while there are *a lot* of bad drivers, we're only bad because we're wicked angry about the potholes.
But for real I feel my soul leave my body on some of these *main roads and highways* 🥸
Edit: I failed to lump myself in with the bad drivers.
I can't eat most things because diarrhea
I mean if you visit RI, the food is crazy good. Pretty much everything else is a "oh that's nifty" type deal and you move on. I grew up on the east coast and much prefer places like NH and Maine over RI if you visit. Less people more New England the more North East you go.
Hey Mark, love your videos. Do you think you could do a few videos on Portland, OR?
Oregon here- Sounds Lovely More Historical
my dad was born in Lebanon and went to study in Rhode island and living in Dubai
Thanks for introducing a new place! Will add this place on my list
Would you recommend visitors to go to Rhode Island in winter?
Great Peruvian food at sharks restaurant in Blackstone right on the river
Coffee Awful Awful! The true mark of a Rhode Islander. Edit: I know this is an old video, but I just have to say that my dad grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts, and if you haven't been there, there's a HUGE Portugese population and lots of Portugese restaurants. Just FYI. It's overlooked because it's a very working class town and not on the train line to Boston (though it soon will be again, I think) so not a lot of people visit.
RI. head games; good signage toward a specific place
THEN signs stop abruptly- sorta near the place- but still not there.
I just found you on my main page. I am actually from Rhode Island, seen your video about Turks and Caicos. Me and my fiancé are looking at acouple destination weddings to go too and Turks and Caicos is on top of our list. Can you give me any advice about it or is there another place you recommend? We never traveled outside country. Hope to hear back if possible. Thanks
