Watching this, I can see that I started watching your channel with the February episode on Rarities. I watched almost all of them after that, making this perhaps my favorite channel on UA-cam. You quite often ask for viewers to leave comments if they can answer a question you’ve raised. Perhaps you could do a video on some answered questions. I’ve got a question: you mention the Rockband project. Have you done a video about that?
Yellow submarine was on the TV when I came in, within two minutes I was having my first trip with no drugs. My sister knew that I was high as a kite, but didn't know I was sober like I had never been. Now I know how to flashback at will, but that was my first time. It was the songs not the art alone. They told us "You can be anything you want, but they didn't tell me that I couldn't be Paul McCartney"

When you spoke of The Hollywood Bowl, which stands on my native soil, something you said got my attention. That something is, and I quote, “Today, it’s the home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra”. This is a true statement, but as you also rightly point out, the place opened as a concert venue in July, 1922. At that time, the place did not have its own namesake orchestra. The City of Los Angeles (of which Hollywood is a part; there IS no “City of Hollywood”) is what actually surrounds Hollywood and The Bowl. Originally, Hollywood was a small farm town located West of Downtown Los Angeles, and was annexed by the City of Los Angeles many, many years ago. When The Bowl opened, it didn’t have its own Orchestra, and The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra was just a dream!
So where DID that famous orchestra come from, anyway? I’m so glad you asked, as it’s an interesting, albeit LONG story. Please bear in mind that in the 1920’s, the entirety of planet Earth was ANALOGUE (or “analog” for short). It seems that once a viable system was developed for exhibition of “The Talkies” (movies with synchronized sound), as opposed to what was found in your neighborhood movie theater, known as ‘Silent Movies’ (which were never really silent from the outset… they were always shown accompanied by the music of at least a piano or an organ, all the way up to and including a full symphony orchestra beneath the screen), the first widely distributed sync sound system was being developed at the behest of a man by the name of Harry Warner (yes, Harry was one of the original five Warner Brothers, and stop getting ahead of the story!). Despite the apathy toward sync sound displayed by Jack L. Warner (ostensibly the chief Warner Brother), Harry and some well-chosen technical people conducted their work on the system IN SECRET. It came to be known as “Vitaphone” (a modern combination of two ancient Latin words, “vita” (with a LONG “I”, as in the word “bright”) and meaning “life”, combined with the Latin word “Phone”, meaning “sound” or “sounds”, this newly coined word to name this new synchronized sound-for-film system literally means “The Sounds Of Life”. It worked like this: a feature film consists of more than one reel of film projected on a screen, exactly like its “silent” counterpart. However, a Vitaphone projector was built with something extra: a TURNTABLE! And it came complete with a tone-arm and cartridge (which contained the stylus or “needle”, just like today’s turntables). What was NOT like today’s turntables was this little oddity: the record played from NEXT TO THE CENTER LABEL, TOWARD THE OUTSIDE OF THE RECORD! Why would they make it THIS way, instead of the same as the millions of Victrolas that had been manufactured and sold by then? All I’ve been able to find are these two reasons:
1) If you should somehow get your hands on one of these records WITHOUT having the Vitaphone projector OR the film, chances were you wouldn’t know how to make a Vitaphone record play. Instead, you’d most likely try to play it like a standard record, and all this would do is make the stylus head for the OUTSIDE of the record and fall off the edge!
2) Record stores were instructed right on the record’s label NOT to sell or otherwise distribute a Vitaphone record. Instead, there were instructions and the address of where to send that record back to The Vitaphone Corporation (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Warner Bros.).
A reel of 35 millimeter film (the standard for theaters) ran about 10 minutes long. The Vitaphone system worked like this: the projectionist would cue the film to a “flash frame” (the film was black until the actual picture on a given reel started, except for the “countdown” (standardized worldwide by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), and when you ran the film, it would count backwards from 10 down to 2, then go to black until the picture started. Each number would stay on the screen for ONE (and only one) second. At the end of the countdown, there would be only one frame of the number 2, then it would go to black and stay there for the remainder of that two seconds. For the Vitaphone process, during that two seconds of black, would be the flash frame. The projectionist would “cue” the film so that the flash frame would be right behind the projector’s lens. Then, the record would be cued to a “sync pop” which the projectionist could hear through a small speaker built into the projector. Part of the genius of the System was that the turntable had NO motor. Instead, it was turned by the projector motor, via a cable like the one used to turn the speedometer in a car - the steel cable was housed in a sheath, so nothing could interfere with the rotation of the cable. Once the film and the record were “cued”, all the projectionist had to do was hit the “run” switch, and both the film and the turntable would start together. Once this happened, that reel would stay synchronized with the record until it got to the end of the reel. At this point, the projectionist would do a “changeover” to the other projector next to the first one, and when the changeover process was complete, the audience would then be watching and listening to the second projector, prepared for this moment in advance. If the changeover was done correctly, the whole thing was seamless. The audience would be blissfully unaware that they were now seeing and hearing a completely separate film and record. By this method, a movie could be made that ran any length, and the expertise of the projectionist kept the audience from ever noticing how many reels and records had played from the time the movie started until it ended.
What does all this have to do with the Hollywood Bowl? I’m getting to that!! In order to prove that this Vitaphone thing would work, Harry Warner had to make a “proof of concept” film. Part of doing so involved the hiring of musicians to make an orchestra of whatever size Harry had in mind. So he set about hiring all the virtuosi he needed (“virtuosi” is the plural of “virtuoso”, an Italian term meaning the absolute best there is, and usually applied to musicians). Remember, Jack Warner (whose iron thumb was on every aspect of what the studio did) was against all this from the beginning! So exactly HOW Harry Warner was able to pull all this off without Jack noticing the money being spent on it, I have no idea.
Once it was proven that this inherently difficult thing had been done, Warner Bros. had to make a feature film using the System. If you’ve heard of the 1928 movie, “The Jazz Singer”, starring Vaudeville star and U.S.D.A. Prime ham Al Jolson, was that feature film. If you saw the lines around the block to see “Star Wars” back in the day, and thought they were ridiculously long, they were nothing compared to those for “The Jazz Singer”. EVERYONE wanted to see and hear this new “talking and singing” movie! And the result? Warner Bros. had to start making movies utilizing this process. It turned out that movies with synchronized sound were NOT just a fad.
“BUT WHAT ABOUT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL?” I hear you saying. Okay. Here, finally is the answer… but if I hadn’t told you all this, you’d never have understood exactly how momentous the creation of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra really was. Since Warner Bros. had put in the time and money to prove their Vitaphone process would actually work, the Studio realized they had all these musicians on their payroll. And as musicians who play together tend to do, they all became friends. So, when this big talking and singing movie was amazing audiences, someone from the City of Los Angeles realized they’d just opened this immense outdoor concert venue. After some talking and figuring out was done, it turned out that the very same orchestra which played for the HUGE Warner Bros. stars all day long would magically become the L.A. Philharmonic after daytime work hours. Yes, the same amazing musicians who would be playing for Humphrey Bogart and Bugs Bunny by day, would be playing Bach, Beethoven and Brahms by night at the Bowl!
Of course, the Vitaphone system only lasted a few years. As soon as business people discovered something like this could and did make money, both RCA and Western Electric set about coming up with their OWN film sound systems, each of which put the soundtrack right on the film. This eliminated the unwieldy aspects of Vitaphone. But that name didn’t just disappear. The Vitaphone Corporation became the releasing company for Warner Bros. films!

My only Beatles stories are as follows:
I went to two All-Starr concerts. At the first one, I went to meet the band after the show and possibly met a few of the members but can only recall meeting John Entwhistle. Ringo didn't show for the meet & greet, even though there were only about a dozen, if that many of us, there.
At the second show in the early `90's, I went with my fiance. Because the venue was WAY out in the sticks, not that many people showed up! We had tickets for seats about 10 rows back from the stage but, as there were a lot of seats close up, Ringo invited everyone to come up front. So, we did (some of us.) My future ex-fiance & I got to sit in the front row and could see right up Ringo's nose! (He's got 27 hairs in his left nostril and 32 in his right.) Eventually, he sang, "Photograph", as he is wont to do at these concerts and, when the song started, I sang along with him but, directed the first line to the future Madame Ex. At the end of the first line, I bent over (she was 17" shorter than me) and kissed her and, when I looked at the stage a second later, there stood Ringo pointing straight at me with a huge smile on his face!! Just before he left the stage at the end of the show, I tossed a copy of my band's brand new e.p. up to him but, either he didn't see it or didn't care and stepped right on it as he left the stage! I asked one of the security guys to reach up and get it back for me and he did so, I have a copy of my own single that was stepped on by Ringo!!
In the late `90's, I got a "job" helping to run sound at a local venue where a lot of famous people played (We even played there several times). One of the acts I helped run sound for was Julian Lennon! After the show, I helped one of his roadies tear down the drums. (Drumming is MY madness, too!) I didn't get to meet Julian after the show but, he left a huge water bottle on the stage that he hardly drank from and I decided to take it and, even walked home with it after the show (about an 8 mile walk) and kept it in my room. I lost it 3 years ago when my ex-sisters had me evicted from my own house so they could sell it!! The guy I was working with that night, Joe Kelly, saw that Julian left his cigarette lighter on the stage so, Joe took that. A few months later, Joe was murdered. I don't think the police ever found out who killed him.
And, about 10 years ago, I wrote Mark Lewisohn to ask a question about a Beatles song. He said he didn't know the answer. I still haven't been able to find out and I suppose only Paul & Ringo can tell me, now! Chances are incredibly slim that I'll ever get to ask them!

aNDREW, love this video here AND every single video you have ever made... truly my go to about everything Beatles. Man, i thought i was presice and a true fan but you raise the bar on all of that.... truly a brother in arms Beatles wise. Do a mccartney ;and Wngs next IF you get the chance. Listen, still love the beatles after 50 years ( yes,, a decade older than you.... or a 2nd generation fan) but i dont have a thing over you brother. ASIDE from being a christian fellow now which is my first love obviously, these lads still hold a special place in my heart and well.... have been AND will always be family i guess. I used to live,breath, eat,sleep beatles back in the 70's which is kinda silly now looking back but , it served its purpouse AND got me through some pretty dark times as a teenager. Perhaps this is why we fans are so in love with the boys...... family and refuge of some kind. ps. in a time of disco and punk, the beatles and thier 60's WAS a lifesaver for me . Hi Andrew, I have an interesting copy of Hay Jude L.p. it's on the Apple label CPCS 106 matrix dead wax cpcs -106 - A , has a Pari Member Approved stamp on the label, have owned this since the 1980s Cover it much the same but does say made and printed in the Philippines, The quality of the album is excellent.

The 1 album like the single Now and Then have such awful sleeves, they are not going to attract new fans on first glimse. A bit like the terrible butcher babies sleeve.
I think the public when they saw the Beatles in Abbey Road and, the hey Jude albums were semi-shocked at how grubby looking they were. They just look like homeless people instead of the most famous pop group in the world
