    Dry Ice is extremely cold! (-78C/-109F) and can cause instant frost-bite to exposed skin. This project should not be attempted without adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

    Project History & More Info:
    It cost just under $30 to refill the tank to get about 2 lbs of dry-ice. Contrasting that with the cost of dry-ice at the local grocery store ($1.00/lb) doesn't make financial sense, but this method is much more fun!
    If pressurized liquid CO2 is quickly depressurized, the CO2 expands to a gas, and cools its surroundings. This is called adiabatic cooling. Because the CO2 sublimates directly into a gas, it's very clean and doesn't leave behind any residue.
    Some fire extinguishers utilize CO2 as the medium for suppressing fires. These types are mainly found in restaurant kitchens, mechanical rooms, and in areas that hold sensitive equipment like computers.
    CO2 fire extinguishers are usually charged with food grade CO2 and are referred to in terms of pounds. For example, a 5lb CO2 extinguisher is charged with a 5 lb weight of liquid CO2.
    CO2 fire extinguishers are marked with stickers, or holes punched in the servicing labels. They also have unusually large discharge horns, and no pressure gauges.

      UberX i found that extinguishers are easy to find if you ever see unattended construction equipment. Like a back hoe, bulldozer or something like that. Check to see if the door is unlocked.

    Cool! And I mean that both ways. :) It's surprising what fun stuff people have around the house without knowing it. Though I just checked my fire extinguisher and it has a pressure gauge, no indication of what's in it and a small nozzle, so it's probably not CO2.

    • @realityforlorn
      @realityforlorn 10 років тому +1

      The best thing you can do is seal the stuff in a Vacuum-Insulated container with as small an access port as possible. The Vacuum barrier is about as good a thermal insulator as you can hope for unless you happen to have a research grade super cooler laying around. Also, only go Vacuum-insulated, NOT Vacuum SEALED, as this will lead to a slow build up of pressure that could be very dangerous. (Storing the stuff in a Freezer helps, but only for so long.)

Beats Liquid Nitrogen any day. I had burns on my arms for a year, after installing bearings out of Liquid Nitro...

    My two favorites with dry ice and a fire extinguisher were in physics at college... The professor took everyone outside put dry ice in a water bottle inside a watermelon and let it explode! With an extinguisher he strapped it to a wagon and popped the top that had a modified valve.. and turned it into a rocket car flying through the colleges museum!

    Where is the video on making liquid nitrogen?

    • @TheMrCheeseyman
      @TheMrCheeseyman 10 років тому +2

      I dont think you understand, you can't make nitrogen, you have to freeze the nitrogen to a certain temperature for it to change into a liquid

      Derpy Gamers United I understand fully what liquid nitrogen is, but he said that there will be a video on how to make it. Now I have no idea how he will do it but he said he will so I was just wondering when.

      He was actually using ISO-HEET. This contains isopropanol, not methanol. You can use 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol instead of the ISO-HEET.

    Or, you know, you can use the fire extinguisher for something useful, for example, extinguishing fire.
