If Koivisto had remained there as vice president and Bush travelled to Finland acting like their president, would anyone have noticed the difference?

Mauno Koivisto was a war veteran and not just any veteran

There's a story of Mauno during the war when he defended two Russian prisoners who were hassled and beaten by other Finnish soldiers and was reported saying "Don't touch these men! Don't touch my brothers!" This man didn't see colours on people but saw everyone as an individual.

I was a 1-year old at the time but both of these guys do really count as childhood presidents for me. Koivisto more so than Reagan since he was in office longer. But this really brings out the nostalgia for both. Whatever your politics these were two very big people for their countries at the time.

One day when Reagan actually was the shorter one.

"Kylmästi Suomen etu" Mitä kummallista Suomen tasavallan presidentillä sitten muka pitäisi olla mielessä ja toimiensa tavoitteena?

Suomen asevoimien ylipäällikkö, tuolloin melkein 600 000 miestä sodan ajan joukkojen vahvuus.

Is it just me or does Koivisto look a bit like George H.W Bush?

George H Bush could have returned to Helsinki instead and nobody would have noticed.

I think he was a bit of a Lincoln for us. Way too tall for anyone to make it work and would just basically invent his own way of doing anything.
The people loved him but he was a nightmare for the staff.
