When I saw those wiring harnesses I'm like, "what?" So much more involved changing radio's out with complete wiring harnesses and cameras.....than back in my day when we were installing our 8 tracks in our classics. Again, you make it look so easy and you always know what you are doing!
If you don't have DSP, which puts the amp and brains for the radio in the back of the car, then you can literally just swap radios. The M5s have the DSP unit so you have to run that harness all the way to the back
I can't begin to tell you that you can't just give this kind of job to anybody. The amount of things that can go wrong is epic! Johnny is a master of masters mechanic.... cool calm and collected =priceless 👌

I have a very similar headunit in my E38 750iL! Was a lot of work to install but totally worth it to have Apple CarPlay and other modern stuff in one of the best cars ever made! Great stuff Johnny!
I bought a new E39 525i with a 5sp tranny brand new back in 2002 and kick myself daily for getting rid of it after 8 years of ownership. One of the best cars I've ever owned hands down. To add insult to injury, the person I sold it to gave it to their teenage daughter as a birthday gift. The young lady was T-Boned by another vehicle and walked away, but the car was totaled. The mom that bought the car from me couldn't have been any more happier regarding the safety features of that BMW and stated that she wanted to buy another.
I own a e39 530 late 2003 one of the last ever made its a special individual model with m pack and suspension and I love it.. Also do the work myself and love it
Always excellent work Jonny! I can agree the E39 M5 is my fav car in the world and I’m a CLS55 AMG owner. I find with BMW windows some silicone spray to clean out and lube the channels the windows glide along the edges helps with window up speed and smoothness.
I was in a serious accident with the BMW Jonny spent many hours on to make perfect. It'll be hard to buy another one knowing that it hasn't gotten Jonny's magic touch.
@@rickgalla3377 Trust me... I know. I drove 1000 miles each way to have Jonny do work on my baby. He redid the valves (burning oil), rear main seal, full tune up and a bunch of little stuff. The engine was near perfect. I wish I lived a little closer to German Motor Works. :)
Agree, I also do not disconnect the battery for simple airbag removals normally but would for any wiring work. I suppose it is a matter of how much of the system you understand. For most people, I agree with your suggestion - Disconnect the battery for a few minutes before disconnection, but always for wiring work.

My '02 530i doesn't have folding rear seats, I feel jipped. I just installed an Eonon head unit and a JL W6 sub and honestly I think the folding seats would allow more sound to penetrate into the cabin. I had to cut a hole where the ski bag would be just to help the sound transfer. There's a solid metal firewall between the trunk and rear seats.

The people in the greater Wichita area should be very grateful to have someone like you to be able to work on their BMW's. Otherwise, they would have to find a way to get rid of them cheaply, or travel hundreds of miles to find somebody even close to you in expertise and integrity to be able to fix them.
Have done this to a lot o MB w211 models. Wiring harness, with optical wires, from trunk to centerconsole. Comversion from standard radio, to navigation with harmon kardon amplifier and bluetooth..
Ahh, reminds me the good ol days when I could buy a new stereo at Best Buy or Circuit City, come home, and swap out the old stock one for a slick new Pioneer or Toshiba!
How many hours did you charge the owner for the installation? I would think it was as much as the new system cost. Great job of installing and nice upgrade for the M5.

One thing you could do to avoid all the copywright bs from UA-cam is you could play whatever music you use on your UA-cam channel via the Bluetooth streaming audio. They won't bother you about that. Hoovie does that all the time.
I've done both on My E39. The Radio was such a large quality of life improvement it was insane. What seal did You use to reseal the Door seal because if it isnt sealed properly the Door will leak water into the footwell.
Yes 100% right! For some reason the always leak on the back doors first, (seal comes away at the bottom, at least the Europe ones do! If you apply heat to it with a gun it makes it nice and sticky again but I’d use silicone also to be safe.

Does anyone have experience with the E46 version of the Avin head unit? It looks great, but I've read a lot of horror stories about aftermarket units and thusfar have stuck with the old BMW Business CD and a nearly 20 year old HK amp.
i took out everything like 3 times and i still didnt get it to work. the previous owner built in a parrot bluetooth kit and all the stuff doesnt work i also took out the kit. but idk where i can pull the wires to from the back to the front. als far as i know the e39 is very simillar to the e46 i tried it on a e46 ]

I have two E39’s 1998 540ia & 2003 530ia both under 150,000 miles! I do my own maintenance on both! At Seventy one it just takes longer! They are my favorite cars! Easy to work on and parts are relatively cheap, just stay away from the Chinese junk part posing as OEM!
I also have a mint (30,000) E39 540i auto … which of the E39s do you prefer ? …. I am not a lover of mine I must admit!!! Compared to my E38 740i sport, each journey is pretty uneventful!

Remember the good old days when car head units weren't integrated with anything else and all you needed to do was plug in the speaker harness, power harness, and antenna to swap one out?
The '96-'00 Escort and the '96-'99 Ford Taurus/Sable was just one of the OEM factory attempts to thwart aftermarket radio replacements with proprietary formats (oval shaped radio faceplates). It didn't work. The aftermarket simply made faceplates with rectangular holes designed to accept the standard single-DIN radios.
we used to get those head units for our e38's, the problem was we had to cut a chunk out of the vent pipe in the dash due to the long cd/dvd player on the new unit
@@johna.4334 like the one he is installing, that looks exactly the same, replacing the mark iv nav in an e38. it doesn't come without the drive sticking out the back of it. there are very few options when it comes to swapping a head unit with dsp

A no-cassette or no-CD factory radio may not have been available for this car. CD's and cassettes were already pretty old music options by the time this car came out. Some people still listen to CD's and cassettes. I don't agree with it, but I respect it. I've even seen some cars with 8-track players with music cartridges and CB radios. Not going to begrudge someone's vintage tastes as long as they don't begrudge my preference for Bluetooth and USB connections.
Should I be worried about buying an M5? That’s been well-maintained with 165k on the clock?! Absolutely love the car but want to make sure it’s Sound decision for $20,000

Got a 98 540i sport and timing chain guard just went last week... ugh. This m5 is awesome... my favorite as well.
