This is a miracle! I used to listen to this same recording almost constantly when I was a teenager, 60 years ago. It was a milestone in my life, an expression of absolute beauty, a celebration of art and life. So glad I went looking for it on UA-cam. It all comes back, and more. Dieter Fischer-Dieskau, blessed man, feels like an old friend. How I wish I could have met him, heard him live at Massey Hall. The Philadelphia orchestra and Furtwangler, what perfection this combination. I want to tell the world: you've got to hear this!

I agree. I love this recording. One correction: It is the Philharmonia Orchestra. I was very fortunate to have met and spoken with DFD a few times following recitals at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia andat Hunter College in New York City.

So did I, and for the rest of my life I knew every word, every note, ever rest by heart - a gift from the musical gods that has been my guiding star.

das Wunderbare bei den alten Aufnahmen ist, dass sie noch LANGSAM konzertiert sind...nach menschlichem Maß

This recording is a treasure! Fischer-Dieskau is great of course, but what I also like is that we get to hear Furtwangler's work in something resembling hi-fi. So many of his great recordings are live or in studio before the days of hi-fi.

So great. Two of the greatest doing justice to Mahler.

Splendid. Listening to this always makes me wish Furtwängler would have done more Mahler. His handling of the orchestra here shows me that it would have been great.

Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht (If my love gets married)
4:14 Ging heut Morgen übers Feld (I walked across the field this morning)
8:59 Ich hab' ein glühend Messer (I have a burning knive)
12:28 Die zwei blauen Augen von meinem Schatz (My love's two blue eyes)
I just translated them loosely, thought it might be interesting for some.

I'm happy to have discovered this amazing recording. Gustav Mahler was born In Kaliste near Jihlava. His music is sad but beautiful...

For me this is the greatest rendering of this work in the history of recording. The combination of Furtwangler and Fischer-Dieskau is unsurpassed. Sheer perfection in capturing Mahler's concept of zögernd, a marking in many of his scores.

I share your enthusiasm for this performance. I own the recording that DFD did later on DG. I think I have heard the recording he did live with Furtwangler, but was not impressed at the time, but I think now it could have been the sound quality. The sound quality to this is excellent, and at a slower tempo the tone colors of the instruments really come through. I am impressed with DFD's singing here. He is emotionally at one with the music. He sings with a longer legato line with breath support. He sounds more vulnerable and youthful here, which fits the lyrics. I have not been drawn to these early DFD recordings, but this is so good, perhaps I need to give some of these another listen.

This is the second-greatest recorded performance of it, considerably inferior to the best, which is ua-cam.com/video/Ur-3LrpgB0Y/v-deo.html

Fischer-dieskau had to apparently plead with Furtwängler to record this. It's incomparable beauty results in an irony that is very much in keeping with the spirit of Mahler's music.

Here is another live recording from Salzburg with the Vienna Philharmonic of this work by the same artists. ua-cam.com/video/2sMLTC1lGEk/v-deo.html However I feel the Philharmonia studio session is the superior recording. Much more time is taken with the work than in the live performance.

For me, as a no-German-speaker and trying to sing this song, this is so good to learn the German pronunciation because Dieskau's voice is so brilliant and singing in such a slow tempo.
    Thanks for uploading.

Hah, many still believe Furtwangler never performed Mahler. In fact he loved Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Kindertotenlieder he just didn't dig the symphonies. I have another recording of this song cycle by Furtwangler that sounds different than this.
