      I I have a Portwest Vienna and it looks exactly like this, and I mean EXACTLY. The only difference is that the Vienna takes proprietary Portwest bayonet filters.
      I dont suppose you know if this is purely a cosmetic similarity or if its basically the same kit rebranded?

    SGE isn't actually a brand. The brand is ME.ST.EL or Mestel (from Italy).

    One of the things that Mestel miss was making their mask really good fits with bump and ballistic helmets. if they had undercut the top of the frame to allow the from of the helmet to seat properly on your head. I had a conversation with Mestel about this, and pretty much received a customer service smooth-over convo (translated: Just say whatever to make em think we care). So until they relieve the top of the frame I don't feel like this is a prime choice for wearing with helmets.
    FYI: As for your pull tab texture concern. They have a raised rib on each tab which is really obvious when you grab a pull tab. Also the retention lanyard is a really nice idea on their part.
    Outside of that this thing is a TANK!

    After years of woodworking wearing cheap filter masks that don't have a good seal and goggles that kept fogging up which was a major niusance. I bought this mask and I absolutely love it. One single unit with a great seal and a intelligent airflow design that prevents fogging. It is Comfortable, very clean air, superb eye protection, zero fogging, and wide field of view.
    Some People think it is overkill to get this mask for woodworking. but I disagree I love it and I would get it again.

    SGE makes a kit for glasses to be mounted inside the mask for about $35. Usually you can go to any eyeglass place and they can custom fit poly carbonate lenses for about $100. Great review!!

    I recently picked up a family pack of MSA millenniums on eBay (2mediums, 1 small) for $300 I love it, it actually does take standard 40 mm NATO filters, comes with the drinking tube installed and there are a number of goodies that can be added such as an electronic voice amplifier that Clips onto the speech diaphragm, tinted / replaceable "outserts" (visors) to protect the soft silicone lens, chem hoods and spectacle kits. That said, I wouldn't mind having a closer look at the mestel sge 400/3, that snout seems a little funky, but having the third option of filter placement is appealing.

  • @davefried
    @davefried 6 років тому

    you can take the mask to your vision care provider and they fit a prescription visor into it for you. of course, the mask will then be customized to you, so you can’t really share it with anyone else in a hazard situation, but at least you’ll be able to see if you can’t wear contacts (like me).

    For Alpha operators...those with beards, a barrier cream applied to the beard before donning the mask will act as a beard seal. In an emergency petroleum jelly can work. beards shorter than 1" is recommended or you'll really have to apply the barrier cream real thick. I'll keep my beard.

    Hey great review. Always Quality and Informative videos. Question how does it hold up to heat example if your in a burning building? Hows the resistance to water example if there is rain? And last question how far can someone hear you with the mask on, 10ft?

  • @gregchamberlain7554

    I wish Mestel would put better relief in the top portion of the 400 series to allow for a better fit. In that respect they are not on par with their competitors in this area out of the box. You should not confuse the pull tabs with the straps even is you cant see, the shape of the end will pretty much know its the pull tab in the dark. I also have not tried this with any of my NODS yet.

    Appreciate the review I've had the same model for every member of the family for a number of years although Anything Could Happen we're just 5 miles from a major ammonia pipeline. It sounds far but every year they send us a hazardous materials notice.
    Of course we've been prepared for decades for what's going on today would still likely have everyone covered but some of the cartridges are reaching expiration date and one thing I've never been quite sure of just how long they would last I didn't just buy them for ammonia they are the one cartridge fits all scenarios and at $31 a piece I am curious just how many hours when gets for that price.

  • @iblackfeathers
    @iblackfeathers 6 років тому +8

    on the ball bearing test the mask wasn't secured to a stationary object that some of the intended force directed at it was dissipated. but i'd rather not damage an expensive mask for the sake of that test.

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  6 років тому +3

    • @sean6077
      @sean6077 6 років тому

      i was thinking similarly along those lines. might be easy to secure it to a post and use a slingshot to shoot the ball bearings at the mask. granted it's still not 300 mph, but way faster than anyone can throw.

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  6 років тому +1

    I’ve had uses for my crews and myself for similars masks to these, specifically the MSA mask; one of my former US Military employees, was able to fabricate a device to use a hydration hose fitting. It appears this mask is of similar quality to the MSA, with different, perhaps better connections for the filters. I wonder did you find any information about adapting this mask to utilize a hydration hose?

    Love your videos, but you didn’t give any details on the filters. As far as prepping goes, it’s the canisters you need to stockpile, right? How long does a filter last in constant use? I’ve seen people say you can keep using them over and over for things like tear gas, but in a full on chemical attack they may only last 45 minutes before their effectiveness wears out. How long would they last in a heavy dust area like a collapsed building situation? I’ve been considering adding these to the family prep plan but I’m concerned to be really useful, I’d need another back pack just for canisters!

    • @TheUrbanPrepper
      @TheUrbanPrepper  6 років тому +1

      True. I wanted this video to be specific to the mask. I figured I could do a whole separate video on filters. That would be a fun topic to dive into in a dedicated video.

    Did you find that the lower straps, which go around the back of your neck, did you find it they cut off any blood flow do your Junior, or otherwise messed with you in anyway? Thing I’m worried about is the lower Facio I feel like the tip of my chin isn’t pushing against the plastic enough. And then I just worry about the back of the neck bottom straps. Otherwise I love mine I think it’s really cool. I need to get some filters. My original dream was to use this for airsoft, now I think it’s a really good gas mask, it’s so nice I’m worried to put it to airsoft even though it probably will be fine. Even though it’s resistant, I don’t want to get scuffed and buffed and scratched, but then even if it does it’s never going to be damaged by that usage. Even if it gets buffed and scarf, it’ll still worked fine for dangerpus breathing situations i guess.

      DF DF: I do own the Butyl Rubber (BB) version and it works great and feels good and makes a positive seal. The BB version uses rubber that resists mustard gas. As I don't have mustard gas readily available compared to my yellow mustard, I used and trained with that mask with CS and CN canisters at the job. My mask was working awesome, compared to our MSA's that worth two to three times the price of the italian Mestel gas mask. So does it worth the price paying the extra dollars for the BB version? It really depends what kind of threat you're planning to face. Remember, while facing mustard gas you should also wear a complete NBC suit, not only a gas mask. Hope it helped you find out your way to go.

      TheUrbanPrepper I'm glad you guys are satisfied with your masks. The Mestel SGE 400/3 (not BB) was the one i bought to every member of my family with dozens of 40mm CBRN (orange-grey-yellow-green stripes) filters. As said before, mustard gas is a dangerous agent but as an American, on american soil, you won't be likely to face it daily. The speed it reacts with your system will be so fast, you should always have your mask on you to put it in less than 10 seconds, in a crowded, underground area like a subway station or something similar. Like sarin, VX, the mustard gas are all nerve and blistering agents that are just as easily absorbed through skin as an airway. So only wearing a gas mask is not enough. Without full HazMat suits or MOPP protection, a gas mask will do very little for someone touched by these chemical weapons. Delivered by bombs, or planes spraying aerosols, sarin and VX are as nasty as they are effective.

    actuly for the same price of that mask. I got an SF10 gas mask from avon, Israeli 40mm filter, new head strap, m17 bag (for teporary use), gas mask documents, outserts and the proper bag for $174.70. so remember kids, look on ebay before you do anything that involves gas masks.

    regarding cost: would you want to buy the least expensive mask you can find or maybe pay a bit more for something better to help protect your family. when looking for quality, cost should never be the first factor, in my opinion. you should buy the absolute best you can afford. and even then, save up for something better if you can. if something is good, it is worth the price.

      @TheUrbanPrepper  6 років тому +1

      Wise words! I totally agree. I prefer spending the money on high quality gear. If you wanted to include this mask in 10 BOB's it would definitely get pricey though.

    Do you have neck pain wearing this mask? At first I thought I had it on too tight and that was the cause, then I tried the two filters on each side and felt that neck pain come on WAY more quickly, its the weight, might be I got a weak or f'd up neck but anybody else starts getting slowly but eventual unbearable neck pain from wearing this mask with a filter after an hour of wearing it? (been using it going out to get groceries during the pandemic.

      You could look into 40 mm filter extensions. I recently picked up a couple on eBay for $6 a piece. They are about 30 in static, and will stretch to about 40 or so in. If you secure the weight of the filter on to a vest or some other arrangement, it will take much of the weight off of your neck and it should improve visibility slightly.

    Anyone have the exact NIOSH TC approval numbers? I've been looking and all the ones I've found were from people trying to sell me the mask and all of them aren't actually for any Mestel/SGE respirators (they were for completely different respirator types, like Powered, and companies).

    I've got my doubts that a 1" ball bearing at 335mph would not go straight through the mask. That said, 335fps, maybe.

    The 2003 Israeli IDF M15 masks were redesigned and have been tested in Israel during conflict. These masks are much cheaper than the Mestel SGE 400/3 reviewed here and are just as effective for a fraction of the price.
    Remember, gas masks were meant to be effective and cheap to produce.
    These Mestel masks are very good looking and modern but don’t get caught up in looks. Get caught up in efficacy.

    I have a few pointers for you:
    The filters have both a shelf life, as well as an absorption limit. You may me able to wear the mask for five days, but your filters wont last that long. Also, the filters you have used for testing, are no longer usable and should the thrown away. The oxygen in the air wil make them go bad... please read the instructions on the filter bussen carefully!
    The mask itself also has a limited lifetime. Over time the rubber will dry out and start tearing up. Your mask has then become useless and should be thrown away.
    These type of masks and filters are intented for escape and evasion in harmfull situations (a gas leak on a industrial plant) of to work during a short period of time in dangerous circumstances. This device is not an independent device such a scuba gear or the breathing gear fire men use. It only filters out fumes and particls from of the air around you. It does not project you from an environment with insufficiënt oxygen, as it only filters out stuff from the air! Please keep this in mind!!

    Looks like the SGE does not work well with helmets. I see a lot of police and Dept. Of Homeland Security in Portland or Seattle riots wearing helmets with their full face respirators without issue. I have yet to see either use an SGE.

      Sad fact it's very difficult even with proper fit and training to get a seal and maintain it.
      A hood will help somewhat compensate an error.
