Thank you for watching my review of the awesome Mestel Safety SGE 400/3 Gas Mask! Here's a link to the product if you are interested in purchasing one for yourself: amzn.to/2O4WC6J . With the current news regarding the Wuhan Coronavirus, these type of masks are in high demand due to the respiratory protection that they provide. Stay safe everyone! ~Cliff
this video was so very helpful thank u so much sir .... i have this same exact mask but cant seem to find in air filters to put on the mask can u help me pleaase ?
I I have a Portwest Vienna and it looks exactly like this, and I mean EXACTLY. The only difference is that the Vienna takes proprietary Portwest bayonet filters. I dont suppose you know if this is purely a cosmetic similarity or if its basically the same kit rebranded?
Hi. I have the model SGE-150. It came with the grey filter. What is the difference betwen the grey one and the blue one?? And how can i know if it still works or not?? And which is better for the C-19. BTW i want To buy a voice amplifier cause its really dificult to talk with it on.
After years of woodworking wearing cheap filter masks that don't have a good seal and goggles that kept fogging up which was a major niusance. I bought this mask and I absolutely love it. One single unit with a great seal and a intelligent airflow design that prevents fogging. It is Comfortable, very clean air, superb eye protection, zero fogging, and wide field of view. Some People think it is overkill to get this mask for woodworking. but I disagree I love it and I would get it again.
SGE makes a kit for glasses to be mounted inside the mask for about $35. Usually you can go to any eyeglass place and they can custom fit poly carbonate lenses for about $100. Great review!!
on the ball bearing test the mask wasn't secured to a stationary object that some of the intended force directed at it was dissipated. but i'd rather not damage an expensive mask for the sake of that test.
i was thinking similarly along those lines. might be easy to secure it to a post and use a slingshot to shoot the ball bearings at the mask. granted it's still not 300 mph, but way faster than anyone can throw.
be careful, though. those things are legal everywhere. i know here in Alabama there are some cities where you can get in some serious trouble for having one.
@@TheUrbanPrepper realizing I'm 3 years later, but you also run the risk of injury or even killing yourself when it bounces back. Many thugs have shot at bullet proof glass only to kill themselves. lol
One of the things that Mestel miss was making their mask really good fits with bump and ballistic helmets. if they had undercut the top of the frame to allow the from of the helmet to seat properly on your head. I had a conversation with Mestel about this, and pretty much received a customer service smooth-over convo (translated: Just say whatever to make em think we care). So until they relieve the top of the frame I don't feel like this is a prime choice for wearing with helmets. FYI: As for your pull tab texture concern. They have a raised rib on each tab which is really obvious when you grab a pull tab. Also the retention lanyard is a really nice idea on their part. Outside of that this thing is a TANK!
For Alpha operators...those with beards, a barrier cream applied to the beard before donning the mask will act as a beard seal. In an emergency petroleum jelly can work. beards shorter than 1" is recommended or you'll really have to apply the barrier cream real thick. I'll keep my beard.
I have bought these as a prepper with the glasses insert and with the prescription lens fitted means one less thing to worry about now just looking to get a couple of the 20 year shelf life filters as backup.
I'm upset you didn't test OC and Cyanide gas in the house. You're not supposed to ask your wife, you're supposed to do it really fast while she's out lol Excellent review brother. I have this mask and there are a few more on Ebay for a lower price that I'm about to check out as well. I'll shoot you another email as well as we still need to link up and go over some security ideas when you're free.
What about the SGE 400/3BB model differences? I would've along with my colleagues loved to have seen if it is worth the extra cost. Also I hope you are having a great new year so far!
DF DF: I do own the Butyl Rubber (BB) version and it works great and feels good and makes a positive seal. The BB version uses rubber that resists mustard gas. As I don't have mustard gas readily available compared to my yellow mustard, I used and trained with that mask with CS and CN canisters at the job. My mask was working awesome, compared to our MSA's that worth two to three times the price of the italian Mestel gas mask. So does it worth the price paying the extra dollars for the BB version? It really depends what kind of threat you're planning to face. Remember, while facing mustard gas you should also wear a complete NBC suit, not only a gas mask. Hope it helped you find out your way to go.
TheUrbanPrepper I'm glad you guys are satisfied with your masks. The Mestel SGE 400/3 (not BB) was the one i bought to every member of my family with dozens of 40mm CBRN (orange-grey-yellow-green stripes) filters. As said before, mustard gas is a dangerous agent but as an American, on american soil, you won't be likely to face it daily. The speed it reacts with your system will be so fast, you should always have your mask on you to put it in less than 10 seconds, in a crowded, underground area like a subway station or something similar. Like sarin, VX, the mustard gas are all nerve and blistering agents that are just as easily absorbed through skin as an airway. So only wearing a gas mask is not enough. Without full HazMat suits or MOPP protection, a gas mask will do very little for someone touched by these chemical weapons. Delivered by bombs, or planes spraying aerosols, sarin and VX are as nasty as they are effective.
Love your videos, but you didn’t give any details on the filters. As far as prepping goes, it’s the canisters you need to stockpile, right? How long does a filter last in constant use? I’ve seen people say you can keep using them over and over for things like tear gas, but in a full on chemical attack they may only last 45 minutes before their effectiveness wears out. How long would they last in a heavy dust area like a collapsed building situation? I’ve been considering adding these to the family prep plan but I’m concerned to be really useful, I’d need another back pack just for canisters!
True. I wanted this video to be specific to the mask. I figured I could do a whole separate video on filters. That would be a fun topic to dive into in a dedicated video.
I’ve had uses for my crews and myself for similars masks to these, specifically the MSA mask; one of my former US Military employees, was able to fabricate a device to use a hydration hose fitting. It appears this mask is of similar quality to the MSA, with different, perhaps better connections for the filters. I wonder did you find any information about adapting this mask to utilize a hydration hose?
I recently picked up a family pack of MSA millenniums on eBay (2mediums, 1 small) for $300 I love it, it actually does take standard 40 mm NATO filters, comes with the drinking tube installed and there are a number of goodies that can be added such as an electronic voice amplifier that Clips onto the speech diaphragm, tinted / replaceable "outserts" (visors) to protect the soft silicone lens, chem hoods and spectacle kits. That said, I wouldn't mind having a closer look at the mestel sge 400/3, that snout seems a little funky, but having the third option of filter placement is appealing.
Are you wearing it right now?... I saw a picture where a woman was wearing a mask like this type in a Costco 😳. I"m checking it on AGM website but is soo expensive 😬 crazy prices.😒
I wish Mestel would put better relief in the top portion of the 400 series to allow for a better fit. In that respect they are not on par with their competitors in this area out of the box. You should not confuse the pull tabs with the straps even is you cant see, the shape of the end will pretty much know its the pull tab in the dark. I also have not tried this with any of my NODS yet.
You never mentioned AG...ACID GASES such as volcano sulfur. You mentioned volcano protection, but when reciting the different protection you left it out. Does the mask protect against all the AG particles?
you can take the mask to your vision care provider and they fit a prescription visor into it for you. of course, the mask will then be customized to you, so you can’t really share it with anyone else in a hazard situation, but at least you’ll be able to see if you can’t wear contacts (like me).
I have a few pointers for you: The filters have both a shelf life, as well as an absorption limit. You may me able to wear the mask for five days, but your filters wont last that long. Also, the filters you have used for testing, are no longer usable and should the thrown away. The oxygen in the air wil make them go bad... please read the instructions on the filter bussen carefully! The mask itself also has a limited lifetime. Over time the rubber will dry out and start tearing up. Your mask has then become useless and should be thrown away. These type of masks and filters are intented for escape and evasion in harmfull situations (a gas leak on a industrial plant) of to work during a short period of time in dangerous circumstances. This device is not an independent device such a scuba gear or the breathing gear fire men use. It only filters out fumes and particls from of the air around you. It does not project you from an environment with insufficiënt oxygen, as it only filters out stuff from the air! Please keep this in mind!!
Appreciate the review I've had the same model for every member of the family for a number of years although Anything Could Happen we're just 5 miles from a major ammonia pipeline. It sounds far but every year they send us a hazardous materials notice. Of course we've been prepared for decades for what's going on today would still likely have everyone covered but some of the cartridges are reaching expiration date and one thing I've never been quite sure of just how long they would last I didn't just buy them for ammonia they are the one cartridge fits all scenarios and at $31 a piece I am curious just how many hours when gets for that price.
Hello, I saw that you reviewed this and the Mira Cm 6 M which one would you choose for CBRN scenario? for what reasons if I can ask for them Thanks! Greetings from Italy
Great video ! Do you know if those kind of masks, like the sge 150, use a universal thread ? (Or if all the front filters have the same threads ? ) thanks !
Can you say something about the mestel blue filter in this video? Would you recommend it? What's the point of the "R" reusable rating? Does it mean that it can it be disassembled and cleaned? Can you recommend any other filters under $50?
Did you find that the lower straps, which go around the back of your neck, did you find it they cut off any blood flow do your Junior, or otherwise messed with you in anyway? Thing I’m worried about is the lower Facio I feel like the tip of my chin isn’t pushing against the plastic enough. And then I just worry about the back of the neck bottom straps. Otherwise I love mine I think it’s really cool. I need to get some filters. My original dream was to use this for airsoft, now I think it’s a really good gas mask, it’s so nice I’m worried to put it to airsoft even though it probably will be fine. Even though it’s resistant, I don’t want to get scuffed and buffed and scratched, but then even if it does it’s never going to be damaged by that usage. Even if it gets buffed and scarf, it’ll still worked fine for dangerpus breathing situations i guess.
Hey great review. Always Quality and Informative videos. Question how does it hold up to heat example if your in a burning building? Hows the resistance to water example if there is rain? And last question how far can someone hear you with the mask on, 10ft?
Not at this point. I've been having a difficult time over the past year or so finding reasonably priced 40mm NATO filters that are recently manufactured. I'm definitely interested in website recommendations in the comment section of this video.
Question about glasses and breaking the seal - has anyone tried something simple like using a wad of gum or clay or silly-putty to try and make a gas mask seal around glasses frames?
I’m in Minneapolis Iv been wanting to get gas masks for years. Didn’t really want to spend the money. $170 seams worth it, as it safety, good health, reusable, honestly we could use it painting, dry wall, and I suppose other other high allergy weeks!
Anyone have the exact NIOSH TC approval numbers? I've been looking and all the ones I've found were from people trying to sell me the mask and all of them aren't actually for any Mestel/SGE respirators (they were for completely different respirator types, like Powered, and companies).
I've been looking for months. They're not as readily available as they used to be. I purchased mine for $40-45 each. They used to be a lot less in price.
regarding cost: would you want to buy the least expensive mask you can find or maybe pay a bit more for something better to help protect your family. when looking for quality, cost should never be the first factor, in my opinion. you should buy the absolute best you can afford. and even then, save up for something better if you can. if something is good, it is worth the price.
Wise words! I totally agree. I prefer spending the money on high quality gear. If you wanted to include this mask in 10 BOB's it would definitely get pricey though.
Do you have neck pain wearing this mask? At first I thought I had it on too tight and that was the cause, then I tried the two filters on each side and felt that neck pain come on WAY more quickly, its the weight, might be I got a weak or f'd up neck but anybody else starts getting slowly but eventual unbearable neck pain from wearing this mask with a filter after an hour of wearing it? (been using it going out to get groceries during the pandemic.
You could look into 40 mm filter extensions. I recently picked up a couple on eBay for $6 a piece. They are about 30 in static, and will stretch to about 40 or so in. If you secure the weight of the filter on to a vest or some other arrangement, it will take much of the weight off of your neck and it should improve visibility slightly. www.ebay.com/itm/New-in-Plastic-Gas-Mask-Filter-Hose-40MM-Close-Quarter-Combat-New-Old-Stock/223907189623?hash=item3421e89377:g:IWoAAOSwIgNXwKaU
Interesting. I was wondering if you could attach an oxygen tank to that mask. I did a quick read-through and saw nothing about it. Looks like a nice mask for sure. Thanks for the video. Hope you had a happy new year.
Looks like the SGE does not work well with helmets. I see a lot of police and Dept. Of Homeland Security in Portland or Seattle riots wearing helmets with their full face respirators without issue. I have yet to see either use an SGE.
The 2003 Israeli IDF M15 masks were redesigned and have been tested in Israel during conflict. These masks are much cheaper than the Mestel SGE 400/3 reviewed here and are just as effective for a fraction of the price. Remember, gas masks were meant to be effective and cheap to produce. These Mestel masks are very good looking and modern but don’t get caught up in looks. Get caught up in efficacy.
i was wondering what size glasses you wear? i just ordered one from a canadian website cause all US stock is depleted but im worried about the size that its too small. BTW here is a link to the eyeglass kit you need if you wear RX glasses like myself & TheUrbanPrepper : www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0711XXRRK/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Thank you Cliff. This is the mask I've been searching for. Pricey but if you live within sight of an active volcano like we do I think it's worth the cost.
You're welcome. IMO, I'd prefer not to skimp on my breathing capabilities. It seems too important and there are so many emergency events that it can be used for. Heck, you can even use it for work or handyman related activities.
actuly for the same price of that mask. I got an SF10 gas mask from avon, Israeli 40mm filter, new head strap, m17 bag (for teporary use), gas mask documents, outserts and the proper bag for $174.70. so remember kids, look on ebay before you do anything that involves gas masks.
That's cheap, for that mask. They go for three or four times that price in Australia. (Taking exchange rates into account.) It seems like a great mask. The Australian Army recently switched to using them. If they're good enough for them, they're good enough for me.
Thank you for checking it out, all the way from Holland! It's so cool that the videos that I make at home are watched all around the world. So humbling!
Nice! I think all Preppers should have some sort of gas mask, even if the intended use is not hardcore. Just having one for fires is enough of a reason to get one, IMO. Sounds like you found a good deal!
Tim Lipinski no Needs tio be attached to the mask... Sad fact it's very difficult even with proper fit and training to get a seal and maintain it. A hood will help somewhat compensate an error. But a poncho is better than nothing
A great report their mite be a coming need for these but I hope not. But yea every one should have and carry in your bug out bag. Sir tell the people on the types filters that could be needed.? But I PREAY their will be.
The urban prepper- you might want to buy your filters at rddusa.com. you can buy 5 filters for like 40 dollars. Plus they have inexpensive gas masks and other military stuff.
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I’ve been having a heck of a time finding NATO filters in bulk for the past year. Do you know when the manufacture date of these filters typically is? Fairly recent?
TheUrbanPrepper sorry mainly passing good info from one good prepping channel to another good channel. The channel said he bought 20/30 of them and he said they where all new-ish in a factor sealed container. Can contact there phone number to get the specific info you need.

TheUrbanPrepper Good. I'll stay tuned. I'm subbed since a few years already...
Could you compare this with the MSA Millennium if possible?
I'd love to. Maybe I could get the MSA Millennium on loan from the manufacture for that video? I don't own one personally, but I know others do.

Great video ! Do you know if those kind of masks, like the sge 150, use a universal thread ? (Or if all the front filters have the same threads ? ) thanks !
can you wear electronic hearing protection with this mask on? something like walkers ear electronic ear muffs i mean

smoke you say which filter did you use model please?
Thanks for this review! I have the variant with only 2 ports and it’s a really good gas mask
Could you wear this without filters just for coronavirus instead of surgical mask? When you go in stores and things?
If you had the caps on only you wouldn't be able to breath. Some NATO threaded P3 or P100 filters would work nice for COVID though with this mask.
I just got this mask myself, do you know what the small nylon strap towards the bottom is for? Maybe a lanyard of sorts
What would it take to adapt a hydration equipped SGE 400/3 to a Camelbak? I've searched all over online and found nothing.
Cool video. Any suggestions for filters (or did I miss that in the video)? Thanks!
Not at this point. I've been having a difficult time over the past year or so finding reasonably priced 40mm NATO filters that are recently manufactured. I'm definitely interested in website recommendations in the comment section of this video.
How long are the filters good for or are they single use one opened?
So, good for a Moyer fast ball, not certain about a Big Unit fastball?
LOL! Definitely not a Big Unit fastball. :)
Also, did you try those thin packable foil face masks?
I have one included in my EDC bag and will be doing a review video in the spring.
Great review. There are 3 choices on Amazon. What is the BB version?
The BB version meets CBRN requirements (e.g., protects against Mustard Gas).
the real question is, does it work with glasses?
Not with your regular glasses.
Great review! I've been looking for masks for kids. Do you have suggestions for kid prepper size masks? Thank you!
Those are harder to find, for sure. I would go with a standard military style one for kids.
Amazing. Thank you!
Does it feature a voice diaphragm?
Not by default. That is an add on feature.
@@TheUrbanPrepper ahh thanks
Where can I find the purple/blue ventilation things? I have this mask but don’t know where to find those pieces.
theyre filters, try out approved gas masks website, idk many places tbh
where can i buy this gasmask ??? i need 3 like right now we got the CV all over here in denmark now
This or cm-6m?
Cliff, great to see you back on YT! Looking forward to more high quality content!
It's good to be back!
hey urban prepper! Can we get an edc update?
It's in the works. Not too much has changed though.
do you recomend this for a upgrage of the msa millennium
have you found an affordable purchase opportunity for the 40mm filters ..... quantity discounts ?
I've been looking for months. They're not as readily available as they used to be. I purchased mine for $40-45 each. They used to be a lot less in price.
That's what I have found as well .... thanks again for doing the leg work. Some of us count on you more than you may know ..... Happy New Year !
What size did you purchase?
regarding cost: would you want to buy the least expensive mask you can find or maybe pay a bit more for something better to help protect your family. when looking for quality, cost should never be the first factor, in my opinion. you should buy the absolute best you can afford. and even then, save up for something better if you can. if something is good, it is worth the price.
Wise words! I totally agree. I prefer spending the money on high quality gear. If you wanted to include this mask in 10 BOB's it would definitely get pricey though.
true that. luckily i only have 2 to worry about, lol.
I cannot find this mask on Amazon (I clicked the link), is it on any other websites?

If you secure the weight of the filter on to a vest or some other arrangement, it will take much of the weight off of your neck and it should improve visibility slightly.

can you drink water?
Interesting. I was wondering if you could attach an oxygen tank to that mask. I did a quick read-through and saw nothing about it.
Looks like a nice mask for sure.
Thanks for the video. Hope you had a happy new year.
You just need to make sure that the hose is 40mm threaded. If so, you should be able to attach an oxygen tank just fine.
Does it require you to use both filters at same time or just one?
You can use 1. I like the idea of having two so you can replace one while another one is still attached.
I've got my doubts that a 1" ball bearing at 335mph would not go straight through the mask. That said, 335fps, maybe.
Would this protect me against the Coronavirus?
Thank you Cliff. This is the mask I've been searching for. Pricey but if you live within sight of an active volcano like we do I think it's worth the cost.
You're welcome. IMO, I'd prefer not to skimp on my breathing capabilities. It seems too important and there are so many emergency events that it can be used for. Heck, you can even use it for work or handyman related activities.
have 2 of these need to get some new filters
Keep me posted on where you end up getting your filters. They've been tough to find lately.
Q anyone used this and was alright with tear gas? Or worse chemicals??
Thinking about getting this mask
Mestel mask compared to the MIRA mask you recently did?
actuly for the same price of that mask. I got an SF10 gas mask from avon, Israeli 40mm filter, new head strap, m17 bag (for teporary use), gas mask documents, outserts and the proper bag for $174.70. so remember kids, look on ebay before you do anything that involves gas masks.
Nice! EBay has been hit or miss for me lately.
So 3 ports so that means 3 ASBESTOS FILTERS FOR MAX LUNG CANCER
My House can you explain
twitch moments I stick 3 Russian asbestos filters on them and then I get lung cancer
Does the mask seal properly with a beard?
I don't think any mask does with a beard. I was happy with the seal with my miniscule facial hair though.
Bought one.. screw the cost.. got 4 40mm filters.
Great review! You make me happy!
That's cheap, for that mask. They go for three or four times that price in Australia. (Taking exchange rates into account.)
It seems like a great mask. The Australian Army recently switched to using them. If they're good enough for them, they're good enough for me.
That smile after every statement he makes... I see it in my nightmares
Hi from Holland. Glas to see a video from you again.
Thank you for checking it out, all the way from Holland! It's so cool that the videos that I make at home are watched all around the world. So humbling!
TheUrbanPrepper Because of your video you inspired me and I ordered the Dräger X-plore 6300 mask (it's €85 a lot cheaper in Europe), so thank you.
Nice! I think all Preppers should have some sort of gas mask, even if the intended use is not hardcore. Just having one for fires is enough of a reason to get one, IMO. Sounds like you found a good deal!
Happy New Year M8 :)
If not positive pressure you are not totally safe . A cartridge blower can do that however only a rebresther or bottle can do this 100 % .
Interesting vid, though not sure if I need one. Polished editing as usual.
Thanks for the review, I have been looking for a mask and I think you sold me on this one.. Thanks again.
Fantastic! I think you will like it, Mike.
only 178$ :oo
I would recommend a hood.
I'm definitely looking at getting a few.
What about a Rip-Stop Nylon Poncho ? tjl
Tim Lipinski no
Needs tio be attached to the mask...
Sad fact it's very difficult even with proper fit and training to get a seal and maintain it.
A hood will help somewhat compensate an error.
But a poncho is better than nothing
TheUrbanPrepper have duck tape handy for tears...
Fyi: if you use any kind of helmet test the fit with the hood
Tim Lipinski forgot to mention... a hood helps with decontamination procedures.
OMG, how did I miss this! #Onions Thanks brother for the shout!
You're very welcome! Thank you for letting me know about this mask. It's incredible.
lol to cut onions im taking my moms sun glasses
I still like the FM12 lmao
I confirm that this thing is worked with pesticides and some other chemicals with shitty/expired filters
coming here to prep for the corona outbreaK
fuck me
civilian are saver than military
Walter white approves
Great review! Succinct and to the point!
