Dear Carla Austin About grim looking Christians - - - I once heard a minister look out over his congregation and shake his head and ask, " Are there any Christians here today happy that they know Jesus?" And when they raised their hands he said, " Wonderful. Now tell it to your face!" 😇😄
I was baptized by my friend Kid, I told him my faith in Jesus and he proceeded to baptize me in our community swimming pool. What a friend we have in Jesus.
A Ghanaian living in the United States of America, who is also watching this in 2020 God is great, a great test and testimony for this generation and the generations to come. Glory to your name our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Thank you for this video. Someone said a true friend is that person who in your darkest hour while the whole world is walking out, this, your friend comes walking in. After 40 years of being a Christian I only wish that I would've been to Jesus the Friend that He has been to me. He has been all that and more and continues to be. God bless.
So very true. After passing through a tragedy (much like the author of this hymn), countless friends left me, but one human friend walked into my fiery furnace of affliction and stayed with me. In the subsequent two years, I learned more about God than I could have learned in several lifetimes. Our adversity is indeed God's opportunity.
All the best hymns come from people who have lived through real life tests. That is why they connect and bring hope. I love how God has used them to reach me in my real life.
They`d nailed him on a cross of wood--he`d made the hill on which it stood. (Of course, the Bible makes no mention of his being crucified on a `hill called Mt. Calvary`--that bit is mere legend. I have been to the more likely spot of Golgotha, a hillside used as a quarry perhaps as early as Solomon`s time, the frontal view of which does resemble the orifices of a skull, with the adjacent `Garden Tomb` with its ancient water cistern, one of the largest in ancient Jerusalem. The crucifixion would have been, not atop the hill, but at its foot, near the roadway where the exhibition would have telling effect on passersby. The victim was bloody and shamed, with nakedness exposed...not at all like the cross adornment popular today but truly an emblem of suffering and shame. The possible spot is now a noisy parking lot of busses behind an Arab bus station.)
I want to bear testimony that I know God hears and answers our prayers. He knows and loves each of us personally. There is a purpose to all things, even heartbreaking sorrow. Perhaps we have these challenges so we can become the people we need to be in order to reach our full potential.
Jeannette Meek bullshit, heaven and hell ,the latter being Earth, we have no hope in hell and God can't do anything period . I should know I have been going through this B's everyday of my life , lied to by all these wonderful Christan people 😱😵

What a story to ponder on. When we are tossed by life billows. The Story of Joseph Sriven is deeply moving. He endures the death of his childhood love, a day before their wedding. For a second time, he endures the death of another woman he loved a couple of weeks before their wedding - What a Tragedy in his life. Inspite of it all he found extraodinary friendship with God which gave him purpose and hope. Indeed what a friend we have in Jesus.
Thank you so much for posting this. It is most humbling to watch. This great man, turning to Jesus each time tragedy struck, instead of turning against Him. All Glory be to Our Lord and Saviour.
katrinaparis amen ! So hard at times not to question the Lord and not want to give up..i am guilty of that myself. Although the devil would like nothing more. I try to hold on lately to my faith in The Lord even if by my fingertips..but I know ultimately He is holding us
The Lord is always there for us, he has done wonderful things in my life. I am nothing without him. Thank you lord Jesus for all being a part of my life.
The Story of Joseph Seriven is deeply moving. He endures the death of his childhood love, a day before their wedding. For a second time, he endures the death of another woman he loved shortly before their wedding. He writes a letter to his mother recounting how Christ sustained him in through pain, and spent rest of his life helping widows, orphans, disabled, free of charge.
Alexander Paul I love this hymn, but I have grave suspicions about the author, Mr Scriven. After the mysterious death of his fiancée (something scared her horse so much that the horse threw her, and she landed in the river, and Mr Scriven watched her drown because he couldn’t swim), he left Ireland, and was estranged from his family for many years. His next fiancée died of pneumonia contracted during a watery escapade with Mr Scriven who was attempting to baptise her. Mr Scriven ended his own life in a river.
I no longer call you servants, but friends. By His blood He established the Covenant of Friendship for all of humanity. He proved the love of His friendship by laying down His life for us all. We can trust this friendship till eternity.
I am sure my father never knew this story, but oh what a faith the writer. Tragedy at times makes us bitter and sometimes we think that only when everything is going 'right' that we are blessed. Do we see how many persons through the ages have been blessed by this man's pain. When we have pain take it to Jesus, He's the friend who will never leave you nor forsake you.
Amen to that! i am reminded of another great song-which rigs true even today..... "Standing somewhere in the Shadows you'll find Jesus He's a friend who always cares and understands Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find him You'll know him by the nail prints in His hands"
Nihal Jayamanne In the Bible we are told that salvation comes by believing on the Lord Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins and raised from the dead by the power of God's Holy Spirit to show His power over sin, death, and the devil...that He died in my place for me...and that I need to accept it by faith that He died for me! This is to be Born Again as the Holy Lord Jesus Christ taught must take place in order for salvation which is a reality...to take place.
Thank you Jesus for being our friend. I love you so much! I believe in your power. I’ve never felt fulfilled without you. I trust your work in my life. Thank you Jesus for bearing my burdens.
This is my favourite hymn! It has helped me through many hard things in life. As a Christian, Jesus has been my friend and helper for years. Thank you for this song ! God is so faithful and carries us when we can’t walk!
One of our favorite hymn at home. Listening to this story reminds me of my Late Dad who always tells us the story about this Hymn sung around Methodist Churches around my Home country, Fiji Islands 🇫🇯
Really Indeed Our Lord Jesus is a true Friend I m just healing myself from a broken heart by a dear friend I came across this video Comforted me God bless & thank you for this video
Tears fall as I too remember my Aunt Alizabeth who suffered horribly with Epilepsy seizers. She sang this song all the time. No matter what pain she bore.. I miss her now.. She is at her rest.. but oh!! she loved her Lord... Because she was a small light in my young world. I too came to know the Lord later in life.. I too have found such a friend a wonderful friend in JESUS!!. My heart breaks for the author of this AMAZING song.. But He too will see Jesus, Then all his pain no more to bear.
Thank you. This hymn reached me in childhood and is still very dear to me. Jesus has always been that friend. Thank you, Lord for the man that even in his sorrow wrote this hymn reflecting your love for us.
A very touching story of a man moved to helping others, motivated by his own tragedy and misfortune.May his spirit live on in us and propel us to a closer relationship with God...I agree
I have viewed this video many many many time that I cannot count over several years and it still moves me motivates me spiritually and touches my heart. Thank you Jesus Christ You are the Savior and one true faithful best Friend. "Oh what friend we have in Jesus" Oh, what peace we often forfeit Oh, what needless pain we bear All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer. God Bless everyone here.
Having just been in Port Hope, Ontario last week - I did some research on Joseph Scriven - a very good man. Lots more info on Wikipedia. A tall obelisk was built upon his grave with the words from the song and the following inscription: This monument was erected to the memory of Joseph Scriven, B.A., by lovers of his hymn, which is engraved hereon, and is his best memorial. Born at Seapatrick, Co. Down, Ireland, Sept.10, 1819, emigrated to Canada 1844. Entered into rest at Bewdley, Rice Lake, August 10, 1886, and buried here. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
God bless you so much my sis for this beautiful piece of information about Joseph scriven a great author and writer of the song that moves my heart everyday "What a friend we have in Jesus 🙏🙏🙏🙌
At this time when we see the word of God coming alive and being unfold before our very eye, may we watch and be prayerful. The end is nearer than we think. He is looking for the faithful few who will not for anything whatsoever compromise His Word which never fall down void but Must accomplish. Therefore be vigilant and be ready for the bridegroom is coming for His bride. Praise God. Halleluyah!
Yes, He will be coming soon, in the clouds with great glory! And every eye shall see Him, and every knee shall bow to the King of kings, and Lord of lords!
Thank you for posting as I wept through this video. God certainly has used this hymn greatly and we sang it this morning during service. I've also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Al Smith on the video what a wealth of knowledge he had of hymns.
I have walked through a deep valley for just above five years, but I know the Lord and his great grace has sustained me. I find myself experiencing deeper, more serious prayer and the desire to listen to great hymns that bring encouragement. One such hymn is "Be Still My Soul". Another is "Jesus Saviour Pilot Me". I am also acknowledging my complete helplessness and complete dependence on his timing and direction. "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths".
As a christian we have to not only walk on the mountain top but in the valley. Jesus said he would never leave us or forsake us, and as I look back can see that my precious LORD and SAVIOR was always there with me. OH WHAT A FRIEND WE HAVE IN JESUS.
'How Great Thou Art' and 'In the Garden' are 2 old hymns that always take me to church. Found this story from listening to 'Crying in the Chapel' by Elvis, also very tender song.
What a story of one man's life to ponder. I thank the Lord for this man and I'm deeply moved by the tremendous losses in his life, that led to this song coming into our lives, to share through those experiences in his own life. "What a Friend We have in Jesus"
When it came to the part where he found love again, I was feeling joy for him, but then when she came down with pneumonia, and died, I actually said out loud, " oh, no!" Both of His ladies were very beautiful. I wonder if God had intended him all along to be single. I truly wish He had written some other things that would help singles in spiritual life. It is extremely difficult for most, to live absolutely purity. I love this hymn and often sing it to myself. Thank -you Jesus for being our very best friend, and helping us be a good friend to others. Thank you for this inspiriting video!
This hymn is helping me through this rough times... learning this story, it just made me understand more how Jesus is here with me. Blessed be Joseph and praised be God... for allowing this blessing from Joseph words to keep helping those in need yet in his eternal rest.

This was my late father's favourite hymn, praise God for men like my dad who taught me that there is no friend like Jesus.
I was baptized by my friend Kid, I told him my faith in Jesus and he proceeded to baptize me in our community swimming pool. What a friend we have in Jesus.
Alot of the great hymns were birthed from the pain, sorrow and trials the authors went through. What a friend, it is well, amazing grace...
I have decided to follow Jesus
Im an African living in a city in Ontario Canada as this man of God! Wow May Hod use me to free and minister his people here.
A Ghanaian living in the United States of America, who is also watching this in 2020
God is great, a great test and testimony for this generation and the generations to come.
Glory to your name our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Im crying...😭😭😭 i know i am not alone when i have jesus
Eat less soy
Thank you for this video. Someone said a true friend is that person who in your darkest hour while the whole world is walking out, this, your friend comes walking in. After 40 years of being a Christian I only wish that I would've been to Jesus the Friend that He has been to me. He has been all that and more and continues to be. God bless.
Same, even though I am very new in the body of Christ
Dale Tilley Same here.

That is an absolutely perfectly true comment!
All the best hymns come from people who have lived through real life tests. That is why they connect and bring hope. I love how God has used them to reach me in my real life.
Thank You Jesus, You are my friend, and Savior!
Amen
He was crucified on a cross of wood but he made the hill on which it stood.
AMEN
charles mays wow
And the tree on which He'd bleed
@@paulinmiami7671 The real thing is; He was crucified by the same ones He loved to death..
I'm brazilian and this hymn always makes my heart beats in Peace.
My dear Mum's favourite hymn which she knew word for word and lived out all her life
I want to bear testimony that I know God hears and answers our prayers. He knows and loves each of us personally. There is a purpose to all things, even heartbreaking sorrow. Perhaps we have these challenges so we can become the people we need to be in order to reach our full potential.
Amen.
Amen! Thank you God!
That is so true! His hand is in everything for our good and never for our destruction.
Jeannette Meek bullshit, heaven and hell ,the latter being Earth, we have no hope in hell and God can't do anything period . I should know I have been going through this B's everyday of my life , lied to by all these wonderful Christan people 😱😵
Jeannette Meek You must read TSALAGI1839's reply! This is another reason that Christians suffer. Tests are necessary in the lives of all Christians if they are to bear testimony for Christ. The Lord is good! intouch.org, billygraham.org
It is said that God recruits some of His best soldiers from the highlands of affliction. This is a case in point.
This beautiful song is so popular. It has given me comfort when I am down, and the Lord Jesus gave me comfort. ,
This and “On Christ the solid rock I stand” are my two favorite hymns. Never knew there was a deep story behind this hymn. What a reason to live for? Selfless; great man. Lord please continue to mold me for your use
With our Saviour, GOD's LOVE triumphs over EVERYTHING!
I'm from India,,, This is my favorite Hymn
Hymns of Glory.
Passed down from heaven, through the pen
Of a great servant.
This hymn is a for taste of glory.
one of the songs my grandmother used to sing in church that was sung by her choir sisters at her funeral in 1962

I love that hymn, but I didn't know its story. Well, while watched this video, I thought about what faith is, and I came to the conclusion to have faith is to hope and love God even when we haven't answer, or even throught adversity.
He hla hi a va nung em..ka ngai thla ning thei lo ..ka thlarau min ti harh tu ani ..ka va ngaina. em..
I just watched this (2019) from Kenya Africa! So touched!
Jesus love and assurance grants peace and comfort that world can never give. Add me Faith that i may not fall but rise

Beautiful story also very sad thank GOD for people like this, that restore our faith in trouble times praise GOD
The very first time I heard this I was in a children’s home away from my family and all alone so desperately wanting to be held to simply be loved this song ment so much to me The Lord reveals His love for me as He wrapped His arms around me and still does till this day He is my bestest friend !!!!💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
Doreen Mammah Thanks for summarizing the story behind one of my favorite hymns What a friend we have in Jesus
The best so ng ever written in Christian songs.
I chose this hymn to be sang at our wedding in 2001 by the children's choir. 🙏🙏❤
Yes! What an story of inspiration!
@@irenemax3574 you are saying something oh I am thinking too🤔
My Lord JESUS is my best friend in all whole life.
Awww , that's a sad one . I love learning about how these Hymns come about . Thank you for sharing .
What a friend he truly is. Thank you Jesus. What a story for beautiful song
God you are my incredible n amazing friend:-)
Jesus will never let us down ,
But friends are .
"Standing somewhere in the Shadows you'll find Jesus
He's a friend who always cares and understands
Standing somewhere in the shadows you'll find him
You'll know him by the nail prints in His hands"
Inpam Moses That was my favourite song at nightly devotions at college. I did not know it had more verses. I will look it up. Thanks! God bless you.
Amen and Amen
yes ! what a friend indeed.
love him like a child loves
the unblemished purity of love. is the secret of salvation
What an admirable story behind a beautiful hymn..
Wonderful documentary.
"Cast all your cares upon Him for He cares for you."
❤
What a friend we have in Jesus!! He has carried me thru so many hard times in life.. than you Lord...
I love this hymm. It was my mom's favorite song too. Lost my mom in 2014, she made her peace with the Lord. The words of this song is so very true.
Friends will fail us but our savior Jesus He'll never fail He is a true friend in good and bad times. To God be the glory.
This is my favourite hymn! It has helped me through many hard things in life. As a Christian, Jesus has been my friend and helper for years. Thank you for this song ! God is so faithful and carries us when we can’t walk!
My daughter of 6 learnt this Hymn last week and it was interesting to know it's history.
Many, want to be remembered with a monument of bronze, but the true saints of God will shine in heaven for ever and ever!!!!
What I wouldn't give to have this kind of love and faith in my God.
One of our favorite hymn at home. Listening to this story reminds me of my Late Dad who always tells us the story about this Hymn sung around Methodist Churches around my Home country, Fiji Islands 🇫🇯
Really Indeed Our Lord Jesus is a true Friend
I m just healing myself from a broken heart by a dear friend
I came across this video
Comforted me
God bless & thank you for this video
Our most beautiful Jesus deserves, He only, all the Glory and Praise and adoration, Glory to his holy name!!
Praise Jesus, it just brought tears in my eyes
Thank you. This hymn reached me in childhood and is still very dear to me. Jesus has always been that friend. Thank you, Lord for the man that even in his sorrow wrote this hymn reflecting your love for us.
To all, please pray for me during my time of trials.
Jesus is always the best part of my life.. Yeah ❤️my forever friend💖💖💞💞💛💛
God has gotten me through so many tough thinks! Praise the Lord!
Jesus is really a faithful God..He will help you forever..
A very touching story of a man moved to helping others, motivated by his own tragedy and misfortune.May his spirit live on in us and propel us to a closer relationship with God...I agree
How are you
I have viewed this video many many many time that I cannot count over several years and it still moves me motivates me spiritually and touches my heart. Thank you Jesus Christ You are the Savior and one true faithful best Friend. "Oh what friend we have in Jesus" Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer. God Bless everyone here.
Having just been in Port Hope, Ontario last week - I did some research on Joseph Scriven - a very good man. Lots more info on Wikipedia.
A tall obelisk was built upon his grave with the words from the song and the following inscription:
This monument was erected to the memory of Joseph Scriven, B.A., by lovers of his hymn, which is engraved hereon, and is his best memorial. Born at Seapatrick, Co. Down, Ireland, Sept.10, 1819, emigrated to Canada 1844. Entered into rest at Bewdley, Rice Lake, August 10, 1886, and buried here. Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
That's nice, thank you very much.
GOD bless
OurHumbleLife
And, God bless you both in this New Year. Seems like we will need Jesus' help more than ever.
Was he a Freemason???!?...who put that obelisk/horus member on his grave??!
My grandfather was born in Port Hope in 1867. I have always wondered if our family knew Joseph Scriven.
God bless you so much my sis for this beautiful piece of information about Joseph scriven a great author and writer of the song that moves my heart everyday "What a friend we have in Jesus 🙏🙏🙏🙌
No greater friend than Jesus. Today I was reminded of that with tears. 💧
Praise God. Halleluyah!
Amen Winifred. The lord is coming very soon for his faithful and righteous followers
Yes, He will be coming soon, in the clouds with great glory! And every eye shall see Him, and every knee shall bow to the King of kings, and Lord of lords!
Thank you Lord Jesus, for your mercy and your Love and your amazing grace!!!
Thank you for posting as I wept through this video. God certainly has used this hymn greatly and we sang it this morning during service. I've also had the privilege of meeting Dr. Al Smith on the video what a wealth of knowledge he had of hymns.
Salvation is not about a profession of Faith, it is about a possession of Faith, Amen?.
No not really. If anyone confesses that Jesus Christ died for sins and rose again, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9
What a beautiful story. What a blessing. Amen
My mamaw loved this hymn and so do I.
It's so true.. we need the Lord more than we realize. The ones that do know this.. are very few..but so blessed.
How are you
Beautiful - thank you for tell the story!
So was I, Had to go through the darkest time of my life from 2007 to 2015. That was when I found strength and comfort in Jesus.
Great Jesus great, let's carry everything to God in prayer even in 2020
Ive watched this video in 7 years back and cried and thanked him for this beautiful him ... Now im going back all over again .. old is truely gold 🥲🥲
What a beautiful a man or a woman is, that really follows the Our beautiful and holy Lord Jesus.
It can be very difficult to live a pure life...indeed. I am trying.
I was thinking of the same thing. Are u still single?
Im the good Lord intended on him being single i too love this hymn
"What a friend we have in Jesus " the best hymn I like and keeps me going forward in life god bless you all
What a friend indeed. Jesus is my best friend.
This hymn is helping me through this rough times... learning this story, it just made me understand more how Jesus is here with me. Blessed be Joseph and praised be God... for allowing this blessing from Joseph words to keep helping those in need yet in his eternal rest.
