In general, great voices and great singers are rewarded with offers to sing in all the big opera houses. Over the last half century there has been one huge outlier - Salvatore Fisichella. There have always been singers who, due to good or bad promoters, or unique pairings with another great singer, or some of their own decisions, were somewhat more or less famous than they deserved to be. But no other case even comes close to that of Fisichella. Why in the world a singer with a pure, beautiful and rich voice, with free and glorious high notes, with a smooth, lyric musical line, with no particular weaknesses or turnoffs, with decent taste and passion in singing, and with the ability to excel in the standard repertory as well as in numerous roles that no other tenors could touch, and who arrived on the scene just when the number of truly great tenor voices had dwindled to a scant few, was hardly, if ever, invited to most of the world's top opera houses like the Met, La Scala, Vienna, Lyric, and Covent Garden, while tenors who couldn't shine his shoes received loads of offers, is something I simply cannot fathom. It is as if some hex was put on him that scared away all the major opera houses, and as a result, most opera lovers of the last 3 decades did not even know who he was. Nor have I ever heard anything to indicate that he was a particularly difficult person to work with. A historical injustice of great proportions was committed against this man in the world of opera, and I haven't the foggiest idea why.
I think he came around at the wrong time. I don't think people like Bergonzi would even be given a chance these days. The big houses want a 'product' - someone who looks good and has a distinctive voice (Kaufman) over someone who can truly sing. They also chew people up and spit them out (Villazon) with alarming regularity. On the bright side, maybe Fisichella has had a great life as an artist; never quite in the global spotlight, but always appreciated by audiences.I knew a guy who for years was the follow on act for 'a famous Peruvian tenor'. The star always sang the first few (reviewed) performances and then the guy I knew took over for the rest of the run. It ate into his soul and he became bitter about it. Last I heard he was selling kitchens. It doesn't look like that has happened to Fisichella.
@@theresearcher253 You make some good points. But Bergonzi is different because he is in the Gobbi class of singers who have excellent but not great voices, with no top and some vocal weaknesses. So while those who truly appreciate great singing value them for their glorious singing and find that sufficient to outweigh the choked high note, the big houses are not so willing to overlook it. But Fisichella had no such weaknesses and actually had insanely good high notes, and is decent in appearance.
I've also listened to everyone and his voice IS unbelievable. Even Mario Lanza's voice is not as pure and clear and he was the best for me for most of my life! I cannot stop listening to him. I think I am addicted to this voice. Greetings to you.
"he’s by far the best" - I completely AGREE. I'm a huge fan of Fisichella's talent. Unbelievable voice! And watch him teach! Fisichella is right up there with the "3Tenors... "along with Bonisolli and Giacomini.
the microphone is wonderful here it records the voice very well. This repertoire is not for his voice, it is a tenore leggero but in a concert version with a microphone less than 1 meter from his mouth, any tenor could sing this heavy aria. His high voice is good because he is a tenore leggero and reaches high notes easily (a quality in tenore leggero) but you would have to listen to his voice in this aria on stage... he would probably be dwarfed in front of the huge orchestra of Puccini style.
Fisichella is an absolutely marvellous tenor! His finish here is incredible. More commanding even than a Corelli. And he is also brilliant at bel canto. Just superlative technique.
@@1963opera it is hard to say very best. There are quite a list of greats, like MDM... which has clean and much clear diction... one of the best, I would say.
I would say he sounds much better than Pavarotti in this aria. Pavarotti was a very technical singer, and the gears of his singing technique really showed when he sang spinto arias. Fisichella sounds wonderful, and to the untrained ear without artifice
at best, there are a long list of great tenors, even only count italian greats... Pavarotti is the darling of recording corp. and a great ambassdor of opera, But voice only, not close.

To your point, I had never heard of him before coming across a few videos here, and that such a singer would be so obscure is a sin.

Taurens stay put. You have to go to them. And they aren't particularly good at communicating or self-promotion.
In my opinion he’s by far the best. I’ve listened to everyone and this is still unbelievable. It’s the little things.

not even close to any of Franco Corelli's version.

Maestro Fisichella, one of best Tenors on the earth.

Leggero, haha
wonderful tenor, wonderful vocal techinque!
Thank you for posting this.Amazing voice & interpretation

Concordo in pieno!
Grigolo non sa cantare
Sono d'accordo.
Bravissimo Maestro
Un gran tenor
Maestro fisichella
This is pure Gold. 1989, prime.
Sublime. como artista y como maestro. Grande de verdad con letras de Oro.
Fantastic open throat singing thank you 🤗
This is literally the best version of Nessun Dorma that I’ve ever heard.
OMG! What a wonderful voice!
I have listened to all at least 50 times....Fisichella is by Far the best...Special mention also for Beniamino Gigli !
Excelente maravilloso Bravo!!!Bravo!!
Oh that was just heavenly, every single note. We dont get many of these superhumans
meraviglioso grande tecnica e splendida voce
Simplemente magnífico..
Ufff...que poder de voz, imprecionante tenor
GREAT TENOR, AND GREAT MAESTRO, BRAVO.
wonderful!
wonderful!
wonderful!
Great tenor great artist
Beside Fritz Wunderlich (German Version) he has the most clear and beautiful voice. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Awe inspiring, throughout!
Sounds just like the legend Franco, absolutely amazing.
Corelli or Bonissoli?
Fisichella is an absolutely marvellous tenor! His finish here is incredible. More commanding even than a Corelli. And he is also brilliant at bel canto. Just superlative technique.
The Calaf by Corelli is the best ever.
@@szilvia2080 you are 100% right Fisichella is a fantastic tenor but Corelli is the very best of all time !!!!!!!

GRAZIE MILLE!!!
well, this tenor is of course fabulous, but also the orchestra - and the public in solingen 1989!
GRANDE... Salvatore..!!!
MARAVILLOSO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Meraviglioso!!!!! Il migliore!
Amazing!
Brilliant 🎭👍
FANTASTICO !!!!!
Looks like Pavarotti woww. 😍Like Pavarotti and Carreras singing togheter wow
Marvelous.
He holds the last note, that high B (or C), for 10 seconds! Only other singer I've heard do that was Pavarotti. Simply superhuman.
that's not C, that's a B
his timbre is much pure er than P
Bjorling in a live radio broadcast held it forever.
Vertrauen in Jesus.
fabulous
Excelente!!!!!!!!
Fenomenale
So smooth like butter
2:54 amazing high B!!!!!!!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love opera my passion
Amazing
What the actual fuck. Just how isn't every one talking about this guy. Wow. WOW. JUST WOW.
adore him.
Grandissimo.
His high notes have a similar shimmer to Bjoerling's high notes. Perhaps a bit lighter.
Bravoooo Colosal!!!
BRAVO!
Senza parole ottimo fraseggio respirazione voce
Klase Tenor👍🥇🥇🥇
Wow! Real high C!!!!
Great!!
It's B
TRAUMHAFT SCHÖN

tecnica e voce a livello di Pavarotti. Che spettacolo!!
Forse addirittura superiore
Nulla in meno né di Pavarotti né di Corelli.
shit. it was live too
Voix souple , aiguës faciles, belle interprétation mais ici hors registre . Bravo tout de même.
Pavaroti Nr 2!!🤩🤩🤩🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Amazing. Not calaf, but as a recording it’s great. I don’t think his voice works for the role. Lacking the power in the low range needed.
Lyric, not Calaf

There is only one Luciano Pavarotti.......
A mosquito pop freak cracked moderno paper legend
homework.

Brilliant 🎭👍
