Lightweight Windows Vagrant Boxes with Packer
This talk will focus on how to build a compact and fully patched Windows Vagrant box using Packer. I will guide listeners step by step teaching what I like to think of as the "dark knowledge" needed to trim a windows box down to as small of a size as possible. I'll touch on the key artifacts one will need to start with, highlight online resources that can provide useful starting points, and show how the final box can be sent, stored and retrieved from Atlas. Listener will walk away with an understanding of the following:
• A high level overview of the packer box building workflow which is unique to creating windows boxes
• Where to find free evaluation versions of Windows
• The Windows automated setup process
• Powershell commands to "trim" the box
• Patching via Windows Update
• Handling WinRM authentication and reboots
• Post processing to a vagrant box
• Uploading a box to Atlas
I'll make sure to touch on several pitfalls that will not be obvious and finally how to accommodate different Hypervisors. --
