As an architect, this type of architecture is the most difficult, when you have to keep things as minimal and simple as possible but still keep it practical. I personally find so much beauty in these buildings... it brings people back to their origins, to what they really need and excludes what is unnecessary and superfluous.

"a photograph is exactly what you see and the drawing is what you see in what you see" there is something so brilliant about that sentence.

@Element Air Absolutely. If everyone stands in the same spot and takes the same scenic view with the same light and focus, yes, that's just "what you see"-- it's a snapshot. Yet a photograph can be as personal and as individual as a watercolor sketch, which is why we recognize the work of great photographers as being theirs, and while another photographer can copy their methods, just like learning to paint or write by copying a master, you can't copy the artist's mind. The trouble is that photography is a little like the piano--anyone can make a noise with it. But we recognize immediately when someone plays who understands the instrument and understands music.

Film has only the ability of 6 f stops but eyes have 9 f stop equivalent my instructor in creative photography stated! This is why photographs cannot capture all the essence there.

The education of LIFE is what I garner from your poetry Kirsten. You and your husband have discovered a way to take an ordinary day and turn it into an adventure! This video of this "neighborhood" [I love the way they put this name to their property] is so relaxing. I am saving it to devour again - I say devour because this is the cream on top of the dessert! Thank you for your videos where UA-cam becomes more than entertainment - it's a beautiful way to see life.

I'm so surprised people don't show a lot more tropical areas in the world, with all the absolutely gorgeous vegetation. It's my dream to live off grid and somewhat simply in a place like Florida, Costa Rica, Panama, Hawaii, Malasia or Indonesia. I love to be in all the rich vegetation with privacy. The kitchen would be upstairs with a huge deck to watch the wildlife, maybe monkeys 🐒 swinging by and exotic birds like Toucans!

I was an exchange student to Argentina and they have something similar to this 'out door kitchen' idea. It's called a quincho (kincho) and it's usually flanked on 3 sides and open to the elements on the 4th. It contains a bbq/grill space with chimney and always has a nice long table with enough chairs to seat 20 people or more. Fantastic idea for at least 3 seasons out of the year! They've got something very similar on Guam too, but I don't know what they call it.

I love these videos because at first when I see some houses I think, "I don't really get it" or..."it's too simple, why'd they do it that way?" and the more they explain their appreciation for the landscape, not adulterating it with too much stuff or structure. Keeping things simple and the thought into each design, it makes me think differently. Appreciate things and be more open minded. I guess, focusing less on the structure itself and more about how it blends with the environment. i sometimes forget that and this channel helps me to appreciate that talent and imagination doesn't have to be showy or ostentatious, but simple and honest.

In New Zealand/Aotearoa the man of the house used to build his own family house. Most families had a plot of land out of town to holiday to as well, of course near the beach. We call these domiciles a bach (said like batch), plural baches. They are simple like this one is and square but being Kiwi they are normally made of wood.

In ancient Egypt, among the peasant classes, when a man wanted to marry a woman, he would build a house. When it was finished, he would propose. She would carefully inspect the house, and make her decision. If she said yes, the house became her property, not his, just like an engagement ring.

Beautiful. Looking at all those stone terraces, built centuries (millennia?) ago by hand and at great physical expense, can you not help wonder what happened to the productivity of this land? The descendants of the families that abandoned these places for Athens and other cities are now enjoying the void left behind, for quiet contemplation and retreat. Is a new generation not returning to replant the olive trees?

I loved this This taps into my early reading of Clean Straw For Nothing by George Johnson In real life, Johnson abandoned a conventional career in Australia in journalism, and moved to a Greek island which was a magnet at the time for artists and writers. The novel Clean Straw for Nothing similarly tells the story of a journalist (David Meredith) who relocates to a Greek island, but fails to find the answers he seeks after even 13 years.
When I think about it, I have always been attracted to some kind of sirens call (and the examples do link well to the Myth). Books like On Walden Pond by Henry David Thoreau or Razors Edge by Somerset Maugham or Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux although these ended badly I guess it’s the risk you take for responding to some inner compass
