This is my first exposure to WDR. Great band with great soloists. But of all of them, Billy Test is really special. There are some musicians like Monk, Sonny, Charlie, Chick and Michael Brecker, that seem to have an unending wellspring of ideas that flow effortlessly through them and their instruments. I think Billy is one of those special few. More of him please. Again, great band. Truly enjoyable.
Paul Heller, what a German tribute to the late Michael Brecker! Karolina Strassmayer excellent in all her solos. A brilliant performance from brilliant musicians under the direction of the great Bob Mintzer!
Strassmayer's sax solo at 51:00 on the Basie's Blues chart is as good as it gets. Love the WDR Big Band, they always get the job done in superb fashion. Less is always more. The Count of Red Bank, New Jersey smiles down on these folks.

I've just heard the first song of this concert and it is wonderful for this Basie fan of many years. Bob Mintzer did do a CD around 2003 or so of all Basie songs, so he very familiar with the Count and his material. Wow... just Wow. The Count lives on.
Hans Dekker can swing la band into the next hemisphere. Band is only great as it's rhythm leader and he kills all the arrangements. ON POINT SLAYING DRUM SOLO ....... AMAZING TIME KEEPING WITH SKILLFUL TASTE.

Love Bob's funk inspired tune at 1:01:33 called " Off Basie". Every time I hear a new tune like this I get chills up my back. Been that way for 35 years .

This is a most interesting project more for what Mintzer didn't do than what he did do (which amounts to the same thing of course). He could have gone much "further out" but didn't, so deep is his respect and love for the Basie and jazz tradition...and yet it is very creative and I still hear Mintzer in there (for example from 15:28 ) and of course Off-Basie :)
I love this band period virtuosic masters a true tribute to accomplished chemestry it's amazing they respect each artists vision all while bringing themselves to the compositions amazing made me go back to the piano back to scales and reading.

Unbelievable! Super Musicians! First though, a camera suggestion: Please consider way fewer view changes, especially during solos. (Very frustrating and distracting, unfortunately.) Having said that... You're definitely my new favourite Big Band! Totally World-Class! I don't think I'd ever run out of amazing musical moments to point out because everything was truly spectacular. My congratulations and deep thanks for posting this amazing performance!
I quite agree jaykay. The sometimes rapid cuts between musicians in the hope of catching them playing one or two notes is often hectic, disturbing and distracts from the music. There's no point cutting to the soloist standing out front if he/she is not actually playing at that precise second. If the cut has already been made, stay there until they have played something!
I miss Shannon in the group. All other trombone players are tops (especially Mr. Cimbassionista), for sure... but Shannon is another ball game. I also miss Johan Hörlen (on alto sax) though we have the excellent Ms. Strassmayer playing (and doubling in flute and alto) in this venue. Happy to hear/see Mr. Test on piano (super) and Mr. Heller on tenor (he is a heck of a player, tested for years of tenure at the WDR). Mr. Mintzer has put forward excellent compositions and arrangements -- fresh ideas and all that makes a great tapestry for Count Bassie's songbook. Last but not least, the impeccable cooking trio (bass, drums and guitar) that has in Mr. Goldsby a steady pulse and great notes of choice! Thank you for the up!
Excellent comments, Ricardo! I totally agree, man. I have been a fan of WDR (and Bob Mintzer) for years. Bob's book Blues Etudes is what inspired me to keep studying saxophone, and it gave me encouragement, but I will never be in the "ball park" of these monsters. Shannon is definitely amazing, and I love her vocals as well. Can't wait to find out what she is currently pursuing. I think it wonderful that so many cultures and countries are embracing this music and respecting the traditions, yet allowing it to evolve as jazz does. With more good listeners and fans as yourself on UA-cam, I am totally relieved that big band music is not even close to dying. I hope you will post more comments, because this one was quite compelling.
