How to fix the error code on Canon printer mx492 paper jam,dirty ink strip etc....easy fix .use a qtip no alcohol just dry qtip And swipe back and forth very lightly.then shut off printer and turn back on after 30 seconds.
Description
Cleaning the Encoder Film - MX490 / MX492
Solution
If vertical lines always appear on printouts or print always shifts from the correct position, or if Error 5100 occurs during printer operation, the Encoder Film inside the printer may be smeared.
Follow the procedures below to check the film condition, and clean it when necessary.
Press the POWER button to turn off the printer.
Unplug the power cord (from wall outlet or power source).
Remove any paper in the cassette.
Open the front cover (A).
The paper output tray (B) opens.
Check if the Encoder Film (A) inside the printer is clear.
If the Encoder Film is smeared with dust or ink , it needs to be cleaned.
To clean the Encoder Film, a cotton swab and some isopropyl alcohol or window cleaning solution are required.
Moisten a cotton swab with the isopropyl alcohol or window cleaning solution. Eliminate extra liquid from the cotton swab.
Using the moistened cotton swab, wipe the Encoder Film.
CAUTION
Do not contact the rail (B). If the rail is contacted, the print quality may be deteriorated.
The Encoder Film (A) is fixed to the printer with the springs at the ends. If the film is pushed too strong, it may be dislocated. Do not push the film. Just gently move the cotton swab over the surface of the film.
REFERENCE
Keep your hands off the printer and clean the film with the tip of the cotton swab, as shown in the photo above.
Change the cotton swab to new ones frequently.
Eliminate any stains or smearing from the film until the entire film becomes transparent and clear.
If a trail of liquid is left on the film, clean it using a cotton swab that is moistened with just water.
If moisture is left on the film, eliminate it using a dry cotton swab, and wait until the film dries well.
Close the Paper Output Cover, and plug in the power cord of the printer.
Press the POWER button to turn on the printer.
Print the Nozzle Check Pattern, and confirm that the pattern is printed properly.
Print desired data, and confirm that the print quality is good.if error persist please try all the steps from the beginning as shown in the video.

This works... and I’m back in business, thank you... and I knew after thinking that my finger had touched this a few days ago when pulling paper out!👌🏾 good old cotton buds
THIS JUST SAVED my week!!!!
Spent over an hour trying to sort this out and NOTHING worked! Seems there was a smudge of something (maybe ink) right behind the middle where the cartridge defaults to. I just slid it manually to one side found the smudge on the back side of the little clear tap. Q-Tip tip to the rescue and 3 miinutes of VERY light scrubbing it off and shut down and restart! MAGIC! After this I resterted with NO error. NOTE it took almost 3 minutes of making noise on the next print before it started but whatever calibration it was doing was good enough as it printed right after that perfectly!
You are AWESOME! For hours I messed around with this printer it was printing a complete blur with lines and jagged edges. I thought it was totally broken. I spotted oil on the ribbon cleaned it in 2 minutes and it’s fixed! Thank you!!!

worked for me thanks! I had ink smudged on that belt, but a Qtip wasn't doing it. I used a wet wipe and got it off, fixed it right away!

Thank you for your video. I have the MX450 series. I also tried a Qtip but it didn't clean it all, so reading through the comments, I used a wet wipe and needed to also do the back side of that little plastic cable. It did the trick perfectly! May you be blessed!

I think you answered my question. Was going to ask if it is OK to use alcohol or something as a cleaner but if you were OK using a wet wipe, rubbing alcohol should be OK. My wife was already shopping for new printers. She knows how to motivate me to fix something!

Amazing....i was ready to drive my truck over this printer. I had tried everything else so - I was like FINE...i'll try the cutip thing - it WORKS!! For real. Clean the grease, dirt whatever off the clear strip where the ink cartridge lies - and now it PRINTS!!!

That was the problem! That ribbon in my printer was very oily for some reason. I had to use paper towel to clean it off, but the printer fired right up and printed just fine after that 👍

THANK YOU SO MUCH! IT WORKED! Now Im kicking myself in the butt for not running to UA-cam first! Lol I've been working on this on and off for a month! I even replaced the ink cartridges (which we know aren't cheap) because they were getting low anyway. I finally cave and hit the internet, yours was the 2nd suggested video but I clicked on it first cuz its the same printer I have. And look at that! Between the video and the Q-Tip swipe, problem solved in under 3 minutes! LOL Thanks again, you guys! 😉 👋

The strip is called the Encoder Strip, it has little lines on it that the printer counts so it knows where it is. If it's dirty, then the printer is confused.

OMG!!! mine (mx490 series) kept not feeding the paper, i ran through the steps to clean the rollers and then came across this error. I was getting so mad at this point it wasn't funny. And yet I did this and now it's working...with some hiccups (contant paper jams) but it's working
