The cost of food doesn't seem to be out of wack down under, most of the prices are about the same as we pay in the US. Although, 5 cent avocados would be unheard of here.
We do have bacon everywhere “with the bit at the end”. We call then rashers - or long bacon. They are found in the deli section of Coles and Woolworths.
New Zealand prices are at least 25% more per item, except for the frozen goods and bananas which are similar prices. NZ is very expensive at the supermarkets
You can get the big, stronger bags like those Sainsbury ones at Daiso or the Reject Shop. Even KMart has some now too. I love em. The fewer trips to the car the better
I love Aldi, especially for laundry items. Unlike yourselves, we live in regional Queensland (700km north of Brisbane) and don’t have the luxury of a Costco or a fruit market, so we generally buy our fresh F&V from Aldi (45km drive away) and the local IGA (which is 12km away from us). We do tend to avoid Coles and Woolworths though, plus our local supermarket, because they are just way too expensive and the products go off before we get to use them. Great video Ross. Have a great week and stay warm….it’s getting a bit brass monkey up here, must be chilling down a bit more down where you are 🤭🤭🤭
I think I speak for all of your viewers and subscribers when I say - “Mate, it’s time, peel the blue plastic from the kitchen cabinets, you won’t know yourself” but make sure you film it all for UA-cam 😅
Yes, Aldi meat doesn't impress me, and Costco has great deals if you buy in bulk. I just have to avoid the Aldi middle aisles. I go in to buy a jar of peanut butter, and end up buying a new masonry bit kit, some odd kitchen appliance and a concrete owl as well. Nice house, good to see you're enjoying your new life in Australia.
heheh. I remember a woman I used to work with got a call on her mobile phone, it was plainly her husband and she kind of hunched over and said "I told you to stay away from the centre aisle!"
There are plenty of sharp cheeses about. Mersey Valley has quite a few. Cracker Barrel does "Old Bitey" which is kind of sharp. Lots of varieties of aged cheddar, smoked cheeses, parmigiano reggiano, etc.
I have a coles, woolies and Aldi all within a 100 metre the shopping centre, Cannon Hill, I go to. I always go to woolies because it's the closest. Perhaps, I should step outside the box and go to Aldi which is literally 50 metres further to walk and save a few bucks.
Your food prices are fairly similar to those here in Western Canada. Actually, the second batch of dry goods was overall way cheaper than what we would pay here. I'm jealous!!
If you want the tail bit of the bacon - the streaky bacon - now that we know you are a Costco member, get the Coburg streaky bacon in that huge chiller section next to that huge freezer section (I'm in Canberra but Costcos are all reassuringly the same). You'll be glad you did :-)
Thanks for the tip with the cheese.. i find the rip off pringles taste sooo much better.. i do miss the sausages/bacon we have in the uk. washing power yep doesn't smell the same..we have a store near us that sells persil but very expensive. thanks for an awesome video
Did costco last week, was sooo much cheaper and better quality than the supermarkets in terms of meat packs. We also do a monthly butcher shop "Narangba Select Meats" next to Narangba Station. They have a $170 pack where you can get 10 items of meat, including steak, chicken, mince etc and its all very good quality. That lasts us (Family of 8 with teens and adults) a month.
New Zealand remains stubbornly high. We need an Aldi. Countdown is now Woollies it always was just a different name. Our cheapest is Pak n Save but only on some items.
I've noticed that over the last several years, Aldi has become less value for money than it once was, and is just as much as Woolies, who I shop with. For me, based on where I live, Aldi, and Woolies, is a 100km round trip, so any possible savings are lost in fuel costs, especially as Woolies does home delivery to my little town, for less than my fuel, which Aldi doesn't offer. As for frozen veges, you'll find they can be better for you in that as the frozen veges are snap frozen soon after picking on the farm, thus they are fresher than 'fresh' veges as you don't know how long it's been between picking and getting to the store.
@thatjohnstonlife we’re just going through the visa application process. Brisbane looks amazing, but we’ve always had an eye on Melbourne. I’m torn about which state to nominate. Any advice? We’re a family of 3.
@@aishaabdullah6993 thanks for coming back, does Melbourne have good springs and summers? Thing is, brits have a different opinion on what’s cold. Keeping an eye on the weather apps, I can see Melbourne is around 16 degrees Celsius during the Autumn which is like spring in the UK 😀 I’ve seen the average temp in winter is 14 degrees. Which to us is almost shorts weather 😂
@kevape oh no worries mate, I'm originally from Tassie so our winters were on average 2°c and sometimes lower. Melbourne has similar for winter but being from the UK dealing with snow and rain I think you'd find it a breeze. I won't lie, I'm on the Gold Coast and have lived here for 8 years and the summers can be brutal like the air is so humid you could drink the air and it feels suffocating. Melbourne is good if your big into fashion and food. Qld is good for well.. not wearing clothes 😆 and living by the beach. I really love QLD but I find it a bit more unaffordable compared to Melbourne. Just make sure you have a house lined up, I'd hate to see you competing against 100 other people. How exciting for your visa application! We pretty welcoming here, you'd be welcomed with open arms, just remember when your here, if you have questions or need help do not hesitate to ask us Aussie's enjoy helping.
@@aishaabdullah6993 that’s great pal! Yeh I think the humidity would kill me to be fair if it was for months on end, I don’t know how I would deal with it. Yeh it’s exciting and scary obviously. The market for housing in Melbourne looks like the UK’s to be fair. Expensive and in short supply. We’re not looking for inner city living, suburb within 30 ish mins to CBD is ideal. Looks like you get more for your dollar though for housing in Brisbane they seem to be on a bigger plot of land with swimming pools whereas in Melbourne the plots even in the suburbs look smaller for the same money. Gold Coast looks lush!! We’ve also been looking at Newcastle, seems like a half way house weather wise.
If you like weather that is not too hot and not too cold, then New South Wales is goldilocks. You don’t have to choose Sydney, which is very expensive. There are smaller cities in the Central Coast area, north of Sydney, then a bit further north is Newcastle, and to the south there is Wollongong. All of these are coastal cities with nearby beaches and city amenities. You just have to find a job in your field that is on the migration list. But need to be quick as pressure is on to close the immigration program for now, until housing catches up with demand. Same all around Australia.
Mate! As a health professional, I have to say, this is the WORST bag of food you can buy except the frozen veg. Frozen veg is actually fine just make sure its not from china or asia as they are factually known to grow their stuff in sewer water! That Barra and Salmon if you look on the back is also from the dirty water of Asia ! If your kids wont eat fish and you live in Qld then now is the time to start ! Start with a local mild fish like Ling, or Flathead. Take out the bones. Grill it not fry it in nasty fats so bad for their body snd yours!! Why pay to eat imported fish when Qld has the best fish ever !!! Clean water etc. tastes awesome. Also your complaining about grocery prices, stop feeding the kids processed crap like fish fingers and nuggets!!! I dont know any kid here who eats this crap ! All the processing in a factory ! Its easy to make your own healthy baked nuggets if you so wish. If your kids wont eat other stuff it takes 8-10 attempts to try other stuff. Science studies show us if you give them nothing else, they eventually will eat whats offered. Too often parents worry "what if my kid wont eat " etc the reality is, given no option they will eat ! Giving frozen foods because it suits you is a really really bad start to life. Uk vs aust we dont feed our kids packaged crap. Harsh but true. And if you look at life span less cardiac issues etc. fresh is best. It costs less. Frozen veg and fruit are fine their snapped locked. I could feed your family for half of what you say. Its all about choices mate . No matter how full on parents careers are here no toddler or school age child I see is given boxes "mcCrap". It's all choices. We all have the same hours in the day. It's all about educating yourself what goes in that stuff your kids are going to eat. All those trans fats in nuggets fried chips fried food fried fish is later associated beyond doubt in life to be a contributer to early and later child obesity, and later in life blindness by glaucoma. Studies have recently shown trans fats except pure olive oil to cause early blindness in the outer areas of eyes, high blood pressure even early in kids, and more health issues than I can document here. Give kids that crap and their taste buds will become used to it. As for bacon, most of us dont eat that crap because of the sulphur and preserving agents. If only you knew what was in it you'd not eat it. The heart foundation here has strict rules of to which i would refer you to. Hence why the "long" piece of fat isnt eaten. If you want to really take the step and finally be Aussie i would say, take a good look at what you buy and eat for yourself and kids. Fresh is not expensive esp fish. Grill with some lemon and herbs. Far tastier than anything i ever ate from a box !!! I would never ever buy asian fish. Not sure if you just didnt read the back label. We have to support local fishermen and their trade which fyi is not as expensive as a box of crap fish fingers which btw is less than 1 percent fish ! Kids taste buds are formed before school age. Do you really want your kid to say "i need processed nuggets thanks" when their invited for dinner (not tea get it right) with their friends ? And bring up a picky eater ? If you continue to give your kids what you are you only have yourself to blame for tantrums and picky eating. Picky eaters aren't born.
The passata is awful, trimat 9.99 had that fresh smell that lingers. Love the fish fingers. Pesto is good. The nut bars can be cheaper in Woolworths if on special. Chicken crispy is better than the original. The sweeteners are good value. The noodles and gnocchi is great value. The cereal is on par with Kellogg’s. The porridge is delish. Most products come from Aussie big brands anyway
Between the growing popularity of Aldi and the inflation, Aldi is no longer the " budget friendly" grocery store as it used to be. At least here in Florida, USA.

Not sure if it’s as strong as the cheese you like but woollies have an English cheese by Thomas Dux which we love. 😊
