Stuff we discuss: Lifesigns, Jon's brother Ed Poole, More Cardiacs, how musicians land gigs, The Dowling Poole, Luke Machin, Francis Dunnery and Allan Holdsworth, Narada Michael Walden and 'The Dance of Life', Weather Report, counting odd time signatures, Tim Smith's influences and theory knowledge, Zappa's 'The Black Page', Playing with Dr Hook....
Andy is a drummer, producer and educator. He has toured the world with rock legend Robert Plant and played on classic prog albums by Frost and IQ.
As a drum clinician he has played with Terry Bozzio, Kenny Aronoff, Thomas Lang, Marco Minneman and Mike Portnoy.
He also teaches drums privately and at Kidderminster College
Brilliant, I met Mr Poole at a Cardiacs gig before he joined the band, We were next to each other at the urinals and I was humming 'Visiting Hours' to myself and he promptly joined in whilst both relieving ourselves . . . Happy times!
These interviews were great. You guys have a great rapport, you should be in a band! Great hearing Timmy details as always.
Ideal - yet another awesome track.
I completely forgot about this track, what a gem
Now I know I've always heard 1 in the wrong place in the middle section :)
What a great pair of videos. Not heard John speak before. So many of my favourite bands get a mention here (it Bites, Cardiacs, Level 42!!!) :)
What a bang on interview/chat !!
I remember briefly chatting to Christian/Bic in the bar, post gig once in Wolves and he seemed a nice guy, which kind of mirrors the vibe that was being generated by Jon in conversation with you Andy. That vibe that emerges when musicians who just love music,( and tend to have their ego under control), get chatting about the stuff that has soundtracked their lives and been such a part of who they are,( loved the ‘Levitation’ album, especially side 1, building toward ‘Arcs of Light and Dew’).
You’re right about Holdsworth Andy, as I went to one or possibly two tours of his in around 2005 -2010 I think from memory,( not 100% on that), and there was hardly anybody there. One of the greatest electric guitarists ‘ever’ and you can’t get more than 20-40 people there.
Great stuff again though.
Loved watching these vids cardiacs are definitely one of the greatest bands of all time and Jon seems like a great guy whos easy to chat to and has a great knowledge and love of music. This seemed like a chat amongst friends and it was a privilege to listen to it
" The spoken language is mute compared to the amount of information Music can communicate." td
Long songs with lots of bits in …. Legend 😂
Loved it! Thanks!
Great interview, so good to hear from John. I remember the support he did as God Damned Whores, an excellent set and I love the CD, keep hoping for a second helping.
Fantastic interview! As a non-musician I found the Parrot-Sketching absolutely fascinating.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is just the best musicbrain interview ever. Thank you!
A great two parter, thanks Andy! I remember Tim Smith saying in a radio interview that the songs weren't complicated, there were just lots of "fiddly bits" in them. :-)
Great videos, thanks! I really like what Jon did with Cardiacs. He seems to be a very nice guy as well.
Great conversation. You are right about Narada being a great guy. In a kind and gentle way he wrote a note to Tommy Bolin before he died. It wasn't heeded but he tried. Great Zappa conversation.
Good point. However, I would say that silence is the deep well from which all art is drawn.
A fab part 2! Amazing stuff in there!
Great fun, chaps. More please!
The muso talk was a treat. I guess I hear the middle section of Ideal wrong as well.
Another brilliant interview. I would love to chat with both of you lads sometime (fellow musician/music teacher/FZ and Cardiacs fanatic)!! Thanks again Andy and Jon
Really enjoyed this
:)
Excellent fun listening to both parts of this chat! Really in-depth and revealing. Jon is a mensch, and I am infinitely glad he worked with Tim, because they clearly inspired one another...therefore Sing To God being such a peerless LP.
I have a theory about Tim with relation to what Jon was saying about him (ie not listening to a great deal of contemporary music). Tim's approach was so unique, from the very beginning, that I don't think he wanted to "pollute the river", so to speak, by artificially bringing in other influences. In essence, he invented his own quite insular world, and he invented or oversaw all the music to put in it, illustrated and played in exactly the way he liked; so, very little of the outside world could bleed into it. And that's why Cardiacs sound like no other band...there was only one Tim. X
Loved the interviews. I was lucky to see FZ at the Hammy Odeon and saw Cardiacs many times. Most memorably seeing Jon at the Oxford zodiac on the last tour. That was the loudest gig ever. Totally agree on the magical 1979 to 1983 years of diverse chart music. Best wishes to you both and the rest of the little pool people.
Entertaining, thanks!
The bit about how musicians talk to each other was bang on. I know it drives my wife crazy when she comes to a gig.
So, when is the follow up to this GORGEOUS chat?
Ace interview :)
Dubudububudududu ... :D
Both interviews are great, and not just for covering so much ground.
I always think the distinction is between "progressive" music and "Prog". The Wildhearts have long songs with lots of bits in (progressive) but they don't share the stylistics of Prog
Sheffield University!!
Hang on...isn't Sheffield University an 8? Great interview Andy.
I count 5 on a beat with ' Kerry Katona '
Jon always intimidated me. Once we met I knew I was a fool. He IS a genuinely lovely dude. So nice. Funny and warm. Salisbury Cardiacs Pond scum Benefit Gig in '19. xx
