    If you take off the 14m caliper bolts off first, your sliders can come off a lot easier because you can take the caliper off which will gove you more room for your tool. Just saying.

    Great video. Only bad comment is never use the pressed steel plate drag link
    to rest the car on. You alter the toe in and also bend the link like the one use did.

    Thanks for this video, very clearly presented and good clear video. This is a job I'm going to undertake some time quite soon on my 06' XC90. I'll keep an eye out for the Plus Gas you like so much too. I'm sure I've used it in the past but tend to just use WD40 these days which likely doesn't have the same penetrating power.

    The problem with the paking brake shoes on XC90s of this vintage is the flat H piece which means the shoes can't be adjusted. Not a problem with original Vovo parts but with aftermarket parts it becomes a problem. The fix is to replace them with adjustable ones. I did this on my own 2003 XC90. Suitable genuine parts can be found in the Volvo 850 parts bin. I bought aftermarket ones on eBay. This means that the shoes can be adjusted resulting in a parking brake that actually holds.

    Thanks a lot for the video. My emergency brake pads did not release in my S80, overheated and are flat (instead of round) in the middle section. With this video you helped me a lot to get it done!
    But as the owner of this xc90 I'd be a bit pissed how the red jack stand bent the cross-bar from the left to the right wheel. It looks like this destroyed the tyre alignment and leads to uneven wear. (see e.g. 19:38).

    Great video, I loved how you explain how those springs work, I watched the video as I've recently changed my shoes and my handbrake performance has gotten worse and I've had to adjust the nut under the lever as tight as it will go to hold the car on the 4th click. I was hoping the video would show ive missed the "adjuster" at the shoe end....but there isnt one. Stupid Volvo

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  8 років тому +2

      craig855s There is an adjuster you can get for the shoe end of handbrake. I am just finishing off the video for it and it will be available shortly. It was tackling an S60 with a handbrake issue. Same issue as yours. Turned out to be a sticking handbrake cable (breakdown in the plastic coating on the cable). Sorry no video. But remarkably easy job.

    on google, there is a pdf document from delphi that shows the correct procedure for park brake cable adjustment.
    pedal adjuster has to be slackened first prior to parking brake work, and then reset after brake work is finished. 1:remove the center console carpeted access panel next to seat, 2:remove clip, rotate linkage clockwise to cover clip notch, return forward cable exposed ratchet threads by pushing into linkage body, rotate counterclockwise to see clip notch, reinstall clip. 3:complete brake work. 4:depress pb pedal one click and adjust self ratcheting forward cable away from linkage body until slack is removed, and pb begins to hold. its a tight area to work in, be careful to not force or turn rear section of cable out of frame mount, or cable linkage out of cable yoke under console. ask me how I know.

    Looking at the state, generally, of ALL the components I see in this video....
    I am so glad to live in the climate that I do!
    That rear end looks like something raised from the Titanic!

    mate did you do a video on the parking brake adjuster on the volvo xc90

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  8 років тому +1

      Unfortunately it didn't turn out very well so I left it out. The adjuster on the one I looked at had an adjustment on the passenger side. I had to remove the seat to get a good enough grip on the adjuster. It requires the c clip to be removed. The adjuster twisted to unlock, pulled apart, then twisted back to lock again, the C clip back on. A real pain. There is another type with an adjustment on the pedal mechanism.
      I prefer to use the handbrake shoe adjuster trick which I have shown on on my latest video.

    great vid, my problem is with e brakes it snapped off one day pulled off the wheel and discovered the springs and guts mingled apparently the rectangular block sheered off and everything went spinning. So basically I need to know where to buy the springs and guts etc. and how to reattached the block i was thinking about putting two screws through it to reattach. Any help or advice please.

    • @michaelscarpa649
      @michaelscarpa649 9 років тому

      Did you have any luck reattaching the aluminum block? how did you do it? Mine sheared off as well and was thinking of welding it.
      Thanks, Mike

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  9 років тому

      Michael Scarpa I have just recently repaired an S80 rear shoe spring retaining block by drilling a small hole in the lip that was previously spot welded and mig welding it. Delicate stuff. I had to do some pretty accurate grinding to stop the weld interfering with the drum.

    • @fredflintstone2077
      @fredflintstone2077 8 років тому +1

      +Michael Scarpa Buy a replacement hub carrier. The block is part of it. If you have an auto you can use park so the parking brake is not so critical but on a manual transmission, you need the proper parts and it would probably fail on the MOT either for performance or break under load if you try and bodge it.

  • @myviews469
    @myviews469 10 років тому

    You that block where the end of brake shoes meet up on the one side. That block sheared off does it really support weight from the e brakes when they are applied??

    • @fredflintstone2077
      @fredflintstone2077 8 років тому

      +myviews It is the only thing that stops the brake shoes from turning. Without that block the brake that side is useless. The block is part of the hub carrier. You have to change the whole thing. Same thing happened to a Volvo I had just bought. it was an auto and I doubt the last owner ever used the parking brake. I used it, it stuck on slightly. When it heated up with the friction it expanded and the shoe probably broke up and jammed in the drum. The force of this happening on a moving vehicle sheared off the casting which allowed the shoes to spin which then ripped the hand brake cable completely out.

    hi Gordan please can you tell me how to adjust the hand brake. Thank for your well explained video

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  10 років тому +1

      The adjustment is via an adjustment rod. The rod is locked in place with C clip. The C clip is removed, the rod twisted to unlock, then the rod pulled apart and twisted back to lock then secured with the C clip. Location is at the side of the centre console. Passenger side. Some have an adjustment on the drivers side under the front of the console, but I haven't done one of these. The filming of it was did not show up well, and I have have not got the car back to re-film.

  • @eyesopen6110
    @eyesopen6110 Рік тому

    Did you have to loosen the brake wire first? (via the passenger side - by the seats)??

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  Рік тому

      On this occasion I didn't have to. When i used the hammer to break it free there was enough free play to take it off without having to loosen off the cable adjuster. If it had been tight and not sliding straight out, I would have had to give myself more free play on the cables

    • @bunnybr

      The adjustment made via a tube and screw assembly at the bottom side of the side of the central console, the opposite side from the parking brake pedal. I did a video of this but have yet posted it.

    How do you adjust the parking break on the volvo xc90. We're is the adjuster. Thanks

    • @bunnybr
      @bunnybr  9 років тому +2

      Anum Ahmed On right hand drive cars, some have an adjuster on the passenger side of the central console under the carpet. some have an adjuster on the parking brake itself and some have no adjuster at all. However searching on ebay for volvo xc90 brake adjuster you will find an adjuster that will work. It fits in place of the shoe separator bar. You have to adjust them then put the disk on and keep adjusting until it will just go on. I will make a video about this soon. Hope this answers your question.

    • @anumahmed3805
      @anumahmed3805 9 років тому

      Yes I have seen the adjuster on ebay. Would love to see a video on how this is put on and then adjusted. My parking break is useless. I've put on new pads and shoes but still won't hold at all.

    • @fredflintstone2077
      @fredflintstone2077 8 років тому

      +Anum Ahmed Two types. Self adjusting and manual. The self adjuster is an early system pre 20034 I believe. It work on a mechanism built into the foot operated section. Apply the brake 10 or times with the release handle held in the release position and it should adjust.
      The manual system has a tubular adjuster built into the front section of the parking brake cable. On a right hand drive car it on the left side of the centre tunnel under the carpet and some trim. The clip that the guy who made this video mentions is to release the adjustment. There is a special tool to adjust it. It fits into the narrow section and stretch the two bigger sections apart. As they separate, a ratchet system holds them apart. The proper procedure is to release the adjuster (by removing the C clip and winding it in) Apply the brake one notch and then do the separation adjustment. You will have to make something up to do the job. I managed to do with with two 10mm open ended spanners with a spacer between them near the adjuster and then squeeze the other ends together. Fiddly but can be done.

    You butcher, I could only watch till calliper came off.
    Those spring clips come off with a flat head under where the pin part locates and flick the pin out , you do not bend it like you did you’ll change its dimensions and ability to keep the calliper in place/wobbling.
