I worked out of Denver for a few years after working on the railroad in Australia. US railroading is the pits. You are like an indentured servant, you are on call 24/7 and there are penalties if you call in sick (did I mention there is no sick leave?) They run their boards with the minimum number of personnel so forget about having any time off. You’ll get one weeks leave after your first year and then two weeks a year until 8 years service. It is the worst job as being furloughed is always a possibility.
Whats well i saw the pay structure and its not thay great to be on call 24/7 and to be furloughed so much. Civilians jobs are paying $25+ now and railways have gotten a raise in a while
And if you pay your cards right UP will give you a year or two unpaid vacation... a little thing they call furlough... but on the bright side they'll record record profits

You're allowed your federal rest and/or you can lay off for 24 hours. There is a very strict attendance policy to abide by and it's a point system. You don't talk to any managers, it's all done on your phone.
What about non payed time off? As in you want to take an additional week off without pay, is it frowned upon or people just happy to take your shift to gain seniority?
@@AWatchmanKnightonday365 you are holding a job during a furlough. You are laid off. you can collect Unemployment from the Railroad Retirement Board. They want you to either collect from the RRB or find temp employment. I have been furloughed from my Class 1 RR twice in my first 4 years.
