- Because I procrastinated, I ended up with a DIY Full deck remodel! Surprisingly, even I was impressed at how good the new deck ends up looking. Let me know your thoughts below if the design was worth all the additional work and wasted materials. I will tell you this. My wife initially thought I bit off more than I could chew and the deck would go unfinished for too long. Now, she is happier than ever so win for me.

Word has it...Kyle went out that night and switched that 2 by with a 1 by to get the proper overhang...
😅
the mistake of thinking that kids will leave forever, yeah until they come back with the grandkids, lol🤣
I got lucky, never went down the road of having kids. I won’t get interrupted when I’m older with screaming grandkids lol. I’m one of the few free adults out here it seems
That's one way of looking at it. I have no biological children, but becoming a grandparent is a great feeling that doesn't compare.
I’m digging the diy “tweener” projects. I think it’s valuable content that we wouldn’t otherwise see. It’s great to also know that you put just as much attention into your own projects as your clients. The deck looks great!
I can't wait to see what you get for Father's day. 😊
QUALITY SELLS ITSELF
ALL DAY LONG!!!
Another Beautiful Job
As Always! ✌🏻
I swear if I had like 6 Greg’s instead of the guys I have now, we could take over the world.
I am sure Mrs RR loves it. You always manage to make even the mundane into a work of art. Nice job gentlemen. 😎
I thought I was the king of the obscenely long bit extension. That's a large deck. Turned out nice. You should've tore the lattice out Day 1. And, you can make another video from correcting the handyman electrical mess. Love seeing your kids helping. You have valuable skills that you're putting to excellent use.
I'm not surprised that your children have such good work ethic.
The 1x at the end of the video.... only carpenters notice stuff like that. It would bother me too if it were my house so it's worth it to do it right the first time.
Love these random projects like this, your expertise shows in everything you do
And that he isn't perfect -cough- wet cut hole bit -cough... 😅 made me feel better about when I do the same thing.
Stuff the average homeowner does are great. More of these videos would be just fine for the channel
Kyle Does It Right cuz He Is A Pro. Definitely up for Pool Deck Part 2 with railing and skirting. 👍
Love how you didnt do just straight boards and did an alternitve pattern, love the raport between you & Greg, reminds me when I was on a building site working, and joking around. Greggs a real asset. Thanks for sharing the video and keeping the Wife Happy,😇.
That's what I like about them, you can tell they're good friends. You don't get that very often on a job
I could see cole being a good worker just keep encouraging him or find what he is awesome at. Turned out clean. You should have your guy directional bore you a conduit to the deck for an above ground junction box. Then trench to the shed for a exterior junction box and outlet in case you need power out there someday.
Mother's Day gift AND a tax write off.....I like your style Kyle.
Fantastic, what a nice transformation. Very well done fellas.
I just watched the definitive guide on how to lay a deck. Well done!
Im enjoying your videos again i welcome the dry a nd black humor keep it up i need more.
Kyle, always remember: "You've got the skills to pay the bills." 🤣😆🤣
Wonderful expression. They are great teachers
Man, that looks really good!
Mammoth efforts guys.💪🏻👍 Kyle you need a t’shirt with Greg’s statement “ if it bothers you”
Awesome!
I love this deck remodel. You and Greg are amazing. I so love your content.
Other "Tubers have the same problem about seeking the approval. Recently, Matt Carriker and crew got a lot of static about throwing some old , tired lawn funiture they found on some abandoned property Matt bought- the comments were all over them for "destroying those valuable pieces of furniture". Next episode while Matt explained how that had happened, he and others were throwing the same abused furniture into the Guadalupe River, and he end it explaining that the furniture was always going to be set on a new deck they were building. I thought it was the finest one finger furniture toss I have ever seen. Not the first time Matt has not followed his commenters orders!
Look forward to seeing how the railing goes up! Hope you share it!
LMBO.....I'm with Kyle. That 2x would kill me. I would think about it constantly and look at it every time I walked by.
On the back edge area near the shed -- when things like that happen to me especially with my limited skillset and tools -- I use it to see it I can add/create something else unplanned that adds "value" so to speak. In this case, a couple of ideas:
- stairs on that side (perhaps not with limited spacing to shed)
- new overhang say for plants or something
- lighting or umbrella ???
- bench seating along that side (using the scrap mtls too :-)
- etc.
Yea, adds another project, takes time. Sometimes my results have been poor/so-so. But, other times adds something cool :-)
Appreciate the many videos and efforts involved in making them! Thank you to you and the other folks involved.
Pls make the part 2 of the pool deck.
deck looks great! The electric would keep me up at night.
“You do it”, because we want to see how Kyle would do it!
Finished deck looks terrific. But the ultimate test of approval: is the Mrs happy with it?
I was surprised that you bought a existing home. You are particular about property and a very skilled Craftsman. I would have thought that you would have built a home
oh I will...still looking for the right property and the right design
I'm surprised that someone with OCD didn't miter that corner. As someone who suffers from OCD, I'm thinking that's an accomplishment.
Good Job on the deck. looks really Nice.
I put on a Cedartone deck 4 years ago. Just put a finish on it for the first time (Defy product). It looked really good until this year and after refinishing looks like a million bucks! Great products!
I think that it is cool that not only Cole but your Daughter got hands dirty in this project. I always say that kids should help at a parents job if it is trades, and it is possible. It keeps them humble about what you do for a living, and how hard your work to give them what they undoubtedly want, need or ask for. It's also cool that she attacked the project and stayed throughout, you are raising them right Kyle.
Nice to have a little break in a large build series.
Amazing, thx so much.
Damn Kyle, what a tease. Biggest building yet? I'm definitely looking forward to this.
Looks great ❤
Lol classic UA-camr!! I wasn't going to make a video of this but here's the b roll time laps of everything I've done so far while I introduce the project. Love it
I know people who film it just to later look back
I kinda like this "floating in space " deck
And the angles of the supports are really cool looking!
Another awesome one fellas enjoying the in between videos
Funny to see this video… did this exact process with our 17 year old treated deck… re facing with composite/ picture frame/ rebar railings… which are still in process… amazing how deck boards come in 475 colors and textures and post sleeves come in 3… and yes, the project took a back burner twice and is now a three month “hobby”… I also used sealant tape on all the old 2x10s…
Come do mine next! 😂
Great job as always guys. 👍👍🏴🏴
that pool was too green in the final overhead shot. Should have shocked it. Beautiful deck. you guys did a great job.
Really digging the routered edges. A detail that's so worth doing.
Beautiful!
I think it’s time to do some Greg projects!,,,,,
Thanks for filming Kyle. 😁👍🏼
I use weather logic tape for joist tape all the time. I made a thing where I can pull the wide tape thru two upright sheet rock knife blades to cut it into joist tape size. A lot cheaper then using a roll of tape supplied by Trex. I always put boarders on the deck. Especially when I use Trex.
Thanks Kyle, was thinking of doing a tiny raised patio deck attached to my shed, seeing your project has given me ideas and good knowledge to start putting plans on paper, or at least into CAD
Only needs it to last a few more years. Process to fix up to last almost a lifetime. 😊
Thats a nice deck kyle!!! I would definitely sit on it!! 😂😅😊
Looks great!
I always love your videos and work you do and I enjoy it more than anything else because it gives me a lot of ideas to do for myself
Love it 😁
What about making the skirt with horizontal 1x1s with 1 inch gap in-between? That could look pretty cool.
Looks great
You made a basic treated lumber deck look amazing, nice work!
Great deck
From what I read on the "Fine Homebuilding" and personal experience, it doesn't matter about the end grain. I have to pull up several boards I installed last year on our deck because of cupping. The boards are random on which ones cupped, smiley end up or down.
Deck looks good.
Awesome deck, man! I was surprised you didn't end up mitering the corners, unless I missed the explanation somewhere?
A miter on that corner would open up over time. Think the butt joint was a better choice.
Grace Vycor markets their tape for decks, and it's pretty much the same thing. It will add a decade to your deck at least. Well worth the small cost
Editing is on point!
we just redid our back deck and we also taped all the rafters with 4 inch black tape to protect the rafters
That water and those leaves in the pool are driving me crazy dude!!!!!!!!!!!!
Man it looks great yeah I want to see it finished
Sorry Cole But I'm leaning to Greg's Router Job.😂😂
I like it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Kyle, of course they complained about taping, it’s hard work, and if it rots, you will fix it, not them. Great vid.
I think my biggest concern is the big hump under the pool cover.
A miter would have been so much better! Nice job on the deck! I like the spacing of the different sections!
nice
That pool looks like a pool your kids didn’t have to earn in any fashion. My sister and I were told if we wanted a pool we could earn the money for it by picking berries for the neighbor and pull weeds on our own farm .. We accomplished that and bought a pool just like the on in your yard that your kids don’t seem interested in keeping maintained.. The mosquito breeding pool complete with rotting leaves on top of the cover is a nice touch.. I can only imagine what the actual pool water and liner looks like 😂
Good story…Your parents must be proud of you and your sister! Clearly you didn’t take care of your pool either if you don’t know how pools get at times over the winter.
Channel name changing soon to RR Honey-do List. 😂
Composite decking is good for maintenance but it gets HOT in the sun. Any kind of deck or balcony around the house where you are likely to have shoes on it is great. A pool deck where you are likely to be barefoot would be painful.
I’ve used those screws with a narrow head. They really are nice for hiding the penetration!
That’s why I started using a 35’ tape measure! 25’ and 30’ is never long enough for some of the most common measurements in construction! Of course, as an electrician now for 12 years, 25 is good most of the times!
Kyle is like Tom Cruise and Greg is Dustin Hoffman.
It’s a nice look to have mitered corners but the reason no to is it creates a hard to sustain a proper connection of the corner especially with any amount of hangover
I put some fiberglass solid color corrugated roofing. ran them vertical, on my deck. I think it looks good.
The trick to putting those final tiny pieces in so that they don't split is to cut the previous deck board thinner splitting the difference giving you 2 boards smaller, but plenty big enough to install without issue.
Great job as usual. You were definitely right to get rid of that ugly lattice. Perhaps some Versetta stone around the deck would look nice. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will be nice.
Cool build I have bought oversized boards and ripped them down to get the perfect width and overhang. Little bit more expensive but then when people are looking at my grass I don’t have to blame Greg. 😂
wife working on her own gift lol
Hi guys, I am writing to you from Turkey. You have really good workmanship. By the way, I would like to ask you to open Turkish subtitles on smart TV to be watched more in Turkey.
Butt joint definitely the right choice in outdoor applications in my view - mitres always age badly. Tyler (TRG Home Conceps) taught me that one.
I built a deck about that size once using those Camo fasteners and it looked great. Will never build another one though
I think the deck looks great! Just in time to splash around in the water and cool off during the summer and relax a little!
Have you thought about covering any of it with some kind of cedar?
You should do black standing seam around the sides and add some low voltage lights under the rim board.
love your work, whats happening with shop build. watching fom Australia learnt so much youre such an inspiration. thank you
This isn’t even your house unless your shop is somewhere else but the deck looks good
Grab a gallon of ready seal. You can have that entire deck covered in a seal in less than an hour with an old rag and it'll look great. The mahogany stain will make treated pine look like a hardwood.
First of all, I like all your videos and builds. And I always enjoy watching you two work 👌. But what are those cool glasses you were wearing this time?
Have you considered installing the stairs on the back side of the deck, where the offset is, left of the pool? Then you'll have continuous railing along the front side length?
The deck looks great Kyle! 😃👍🏼👊🏼 .... For skirting, what do you think about just getting more of the same decking and running it horizontal around the deck, by attaching the boards to the posts?
Good call on the butt joints! Ive decided i hate mitres. They take three times as long and they always end up looking like shit
