  • Because I procrastinated, I ended up with a DIY Full deck remodel! Surprisingly, even I was impressed at how good the new deck ends up looking. Let me know your thoughts below if the design was worth all the additional work and wasted materials. I will tell you this. My wife initially thought I bit off more than I could chew and the deck would go unfinished for too long. Now, she is happier than ever so win for me.

I’m digging the diy “tweener” projects. I think it’s valuable content that we wouldn’t otherwise see. It’s great to also know that you put just as much attention into your own projects as your clients. The deck looks great!

I thought I was the king of the obscenely long bit extension. That's a large deck. Turned out nice. You should've tore the lattice out Day 1. And, you can make another video from correcting the handyman electrical mess. Love seeing your kids helping. You have valuable skills that you're putting to excellent use.

I'm not surprised that your children have such good work ethic.
The 1x at the end of the video.... only carpenters notice stuff like that. It would bother me too if it were my house so it's worth it to do it right the first time.

I could see cole being a good worker just keep encouraging him or find what he is awesome at. Turned out clean. You should have your guy directional bore you a conduit to the deck for an above ground junction box. Then trench to the shed for a exterior junction box and outlet in case you need power out there someday.

Other "Tubers have the same problem about seeking the approval. Recently, Matt Carriker and crew got a lot of static about throwing some old , tired lawn funiture they found on some abandoned property Matt bought- the comments were all over them for "destroying those valuable pieces of furniture". Next episode while Matt explained how that had happened, he and others were throwing the same abused furniture into the Guadalupe River, and he end it explaining that the furniture was always going to be set on a new deck they were building. I thought it was the finest one finger furniture toss I have ever seen. Not the first time Matt has not followed his commenters orders!

On the back edge area near the shed -- when things like that happen to me especially with my limited skillset and tools -- I use it to see it I can add/create something else unplanned that adds "value" so to speak. In this case, a couple of ideas:
    - stairs on that side (perhaps not with limited spacing to shed)
    - new overhang say for plants or something
    - lighting or umbrella ???
    - bench seating along that side (using the scrap mtls too :-)
    - etc.
Yea, adds another project, takes time. Sometimes my results have been poor/so-so. But, other times adds something cool :-)
Appreciate the many videos and efforts involved in making them! Thank you to you and the other folks involved.

I think that it is cool that not only Cole but your Daughter got hands dirty in this project. I always say that kids should help at a parents job if it is trades, and it is possible. It keeps them humble about what you do for a living, and how hard your work to give them what they undoubtedly want, need or ask for. It's also cool that she attacked the project and stayed throughout, you are raising them right Kyle.

I use weather logic tape for joist tape all the time. I made a thing where I can pull the wide tape thru two upright sheet rock knife blades to cut it into joist tape size. A lot cheaper then using a roll of tape supplied by Trex. I always put boarders on the deck. Especially when I use Trex.

From what I read on the "Fine Homebuilding" and personal experience, it doesn't matter about the end grain. I have to pull up several boards I installed last year on our deck because of cupping. The boards are random on which ones cupped, smiley end up or down.

That pool looks like a pool your kids didn’t have to earn in any fashion. My sister and I were told if we wanted a pool we could earn the money for it by picking berries for the neighbor and pull weeds on our own farm .. We accomplished that and bought a pool just like the on in your yard that your kids don’t seem interested in keeping maintained.. The mosquito breeding pool complete with rotting leaves on top of the cover is a nice touch.. I can only imagine what the actual pool water and liner looks like 😂

Composite decking is good for maintenance but it gets HOT in the sun. Any kind of deck or balcony around the house where you are likely to have shoes on it is great. A pool deck where you are likely to be barefoot would be painful.

The trick to putting those final tiny pieces in so that they don't split is to cut the previous deck board thinner splitting the difference giving you 2 boards smaller, but plenty big enough to install without issue.
