Sometimes... sometimes I actually wonder how she manages to remember her own lyrics. Joke aside, isn't it terrific that she would actually just go and record this exact song in the studio note for note and then only add embellishments that make it even *more* beautiful? The second half, or to be more precise the very last third starting from "So we all raise a standard" was one of the most beautiful things ever put to music even in this "stripped" version - right up there with the melodic perfection that is "Emily" or "Kingfisher"...
+mwaddisfilms Altering the shape of your mouth while singing affects the timbre of the note. Try singing a note and then screw around with the shape of your mouth, the sound will change a lot. She does it to affect the sound I presume.
Just astonishing, every time. This song that Joanna has crafted deserves to survive the passage of all time, to teach and to inspire. To comfort and concern, disrupting the peace in one soul and bringing rest to another. But that, just as Joanna so expertly explains, won't happen. In my mind, Ms. Newsom will always be underrated.
when I imagine all those high notes having the power of the last few she sang it's amazing. i can't wait to hear the studio version. it's already a great song and i know she'll deliver something even more exceptional
it completely exceeded my expectations. and i never expected her to go that hard with those drums n synths and all the other instrumentation on leaving the city. october 23rd needs to be here now
yeah i was trying to stop myself from listening to both songs repeatedly until i can hear them in the context of the whole album but im starting to realize i don't have that kind of self control
I noticed the inner ridge in her ear goes all the way from the top to the end of her ear lob, which is a little unusual, and I stared at it too much and now all I can think is how fcking weird human ears look.

She just need to use it more properly, she struggled between her twangy mix voice and falsetto, all she need is a vocal coach, her voice already has the potential.
even though her piano skill is improving, may be joanna should let someone else play it for her while she sings. The piano isn't her main instrument and she seems to have hard times performing with it
actually it is said in a couple interviews that joanna is a virtuoso in both instruments, the harp and piano. could be that she was unsatisfied w her voice on this day, so she looks like shes struggling, idk
@@lorenacairus9215 A virtuoso? I'm a huge fan of hers but that is an insane overstatement. On piano she's normal to average, the stuff she plays is very basic and she plays it fine. A virtuoso is like Paganini on a violin, like an inhumanly perfect player with absurd technical ability. She's not even remotely close to that. She's a quirky, unique artist who's really great to listen to, not a virtuoso.
Amazing. You can tell that performing this song is WORK. Just another testament to Joanna's endless talent.
I love how this song flows.
she's so talented, god damn.
yea
Makes me feel like I should quit playing music.

+NIMRODakaNIMROD She learned to memorise and recite long poems in school, which helps her remember her long lyrics while on tour
My favorite is also the one started from “So we all raised a standard.” Its so beautiful, the melody that takes your soul to a foreign land”
I love the way she sings out of one side of her mouth.
+Gene Mackie i wonder if she is deaf in one ear. brian wilson did the same thing.
+mwaddisfilms I think it's so she can hit notes.
It's because of the weird enunciation she sings with. It's not one that happens in your throat, but in your mouth.

i heard it because she got so used to singing to the side with her arp
you can see the reflection of her hands playing in the propped-up piano top
shes so cute and brilliant. this makes me grin ear to ear

She looks stunning and she played so wonderfully like just wow
The Hills Are Alive.......with the sound of Joanna........
The most interesting thing is how she sounds nothing like she sings when she talks in an interview.
when I imagine all those high notes having the power of the last few she sang it's amazing. i can't wait to hear the studio version. it's already a great song and i know she'll deliver something even more exceptional
+Ty D Did it live up to your expectations?
it completely exceeded my expectations. and i never expected her to go that hard with those drums n synths and all the other instrumentation on leaving the city. october 23rd needs to be here now
Ty D I know, it's my favourite song of the year so far
+Ty D I love the piano work on the final version
yeah i was trying to stop myself from listening to both songs repeatedly until i can hear them in the context of the whole album but im starting to realize i don't have that kind of self control
I bet the neighbors loved this one while she was working it out
What a babe

JOANNA’S AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL
Blessed be Joanna
She is the greatest songwriter of the 21st century.
So unbelievably beautiful
The cause is Ozymandian
What a queen

this song takes me back to milk eyed mender days, inflammatory writ mostly
Kids now this is talent. Not taylor or justin bieber.

Those high notes about kill her voice. I love Joanna but I can still tell that she shouldn't have sung such high notes.
