I've been running a PF1e campaign for the last 6 years. Same campaign, but my players have yet to either get bored, or fail to surprise me with something they've worked out.
We've been running a Forgotten Realms campaign using the Pathfinder 1e rules for over 10 years now. We sometimes switch DMs with each other and it's been working out great. We also gestalt the classes because of the lack of players and that has rounded out the characters more and made the challenges less impossible for a group of 2, sometimes 3 players. It's been the most fulfilling system I've ever played. And my experience is similar to yours. However, it might also be that you are a good DM and your players are great to play with that plays a huge factor in your enjoyment.
I'd add one more reason: The (free!) online PFSRD for PF1e. Hands down the best resource I have found in 40 years of TTRPG experience. Its robust hyperlinking, search, and layout features (and also source references) make it invaluable for mid-session look-ups and piecing together what might seem like bloat if it were any other game. And it's a handy companion to the core books for a GM trying to build encounters, settings, or campaigns.
True, pathfinder 1e is the pinnacle of the D20 systems in my mind. Fixes all the issues 3.5 had and feels more satisfying than 5e, which while great for simple and quick games, doesn’t have anything really deep to enjoy, like the magic items. Money feels useless in 5e

Thank You! Everyone's all "Go to Pathfinder 2E!" Well, I've looked at Pathfinder 2E and I'm not impressed. I skipped D&D 4E and 5E, and Pathfinder 2E just appears to be a newer version of D&D 5E. I'll pass. Pathfinder 1E / 3.5E remains my definitive edition of the D&D game.
I started with Pathfinder 1e, and have been playing 5e because I was able to get into a game. Man 5e leaves a lot to be desired. There's a reason why I yearn for Pathfinder 1e. I looked at Pathfinder 2e as well, and boy did I not like the math or just overall class and multiclass design. I've only played 3 systems, and would love to play more, but currently Pathfinder 1e is my favorite by far. Though I should give some credit to savage worlds cuz I didn't get to play much and that was YEARS ago.
@@slydoorkeeper4783 There's a Pathfinder for Savage Worlds that I just picked up on DTRPG. At first glance it seems interesting. It's based on Pathfinder 1E converted to Savage Worlds.
Love the hybrid classes. Been a Hunter fan for quite a while. It scratches that Ranger/Druid combo I’ve wanted. The archetypes can help you with any style of play you’re looking for. Currently playing two sorcerers that use intelligence and wisdom as their spellcasting stat instead of charisma.
I was wondering if you ever tried Dreamscarred Presses Ulitmate Psionics. It actually creates Psionic Classes for characters including spells, magic items, powers etc. Some of them kind of have the same class names as in Occult Adventures, but I think Ultimate Psionics is truer to 2nd AD&D with 3rd edition rules. Great video and I invested to much in Pathfinder 1e to go to another system now, unless it's in a different genre.
I haven't seen Ultimate Psionics, but I'll have to check it out. I'm a big fan of the occult classes, but they feel very different from older D&D psionics.
@@d6damage93 Well that's what this does it takes it back to 2ndAD&D it uses points for pyshic powers, and they just updated it for pathfinder 1e. I really like it a lot it's more to the original system I think. I just bought the book last year so they shoud still be in print.
My home group is finishing up Book 2 of Tyrant's Grasp this weekend and after six years of playing APs in Pathfinder 1E, still seem to be having a blast. I keep asking them if they want to try anything else, but they keep saying they're enjoying 1E. Once you get comfortable with the system and the rules, it really is an almost infinitely customizable version of D&D. On the content side - as the "Librarian" for our local PFS lodge during the 1E organized play days before Covid, I still have all the printed out scenarios from Seasons 0 thru 10 - well over 200 separate 4-hour adventures spanning the first decade of Pathfinder. So even if I somehow ran all 24 APs (fat chance of that happening) and the dozen or so modules I own, I still have the PFS library to fall back on. So I could go a decade or two without buying anything new and still have content for my home group.....
As my favorite system of all time, I can see a lot of good in 1e... But some of my top picks Monsters: the parity of monster, templates out the wahzoo, telling you to just add class levels to certain monsters! It all feels really nice. 5e, even 2e, monsters feel far more arbitrary, lack the wealth of templates. And for 5e monsters feel more samey despite Pathfinder having so many shared mechanics... Maybe because they simply have less? The variety of actions. Sure, maybe 2e has it beat on variety of actions, but the fact that almost everything can aid another, bull rush, coup de grace, delay, dirty trick, disarm, drag, feint, fight defensively, grapple, overrun, ready an action, reposition, steal, sunder, total defence, trip, tumble, and likely more... And there are rules for it! It's great... This sort of goes with player monster parity, I suppose. Content! Maybe the biggest draw. Backwards compatible (with minor tweaks) to 3.x D&D, add in all the books to Pathfinder you could play every day of your life and run into something new every session... It is crazy and would be baffled by anything that out-contents it. There is just so much to explore!
I love the freedom of choice you have when making your character's build in PF1. You have hundreds of archetypes to fit for your character concept. My favourite is a hunter, with really cool Ranger abilities and an animal companion and advanced spellcasting from the druid
Hey man, I just wanted to say I love your content man. You help with so much lore and rule questions I always ask and I can't say enough how much I appreciate it. I love PF1e, started ttrpgs with it and honestly don't have a want to change. I even started a whole document of homebrew rules to make it even more fun
Great list. I've played since the beginning and tried 2e for a year and just came here to see how others felt - I am not liking how 2e ignores things like disrupting casters to make it feel balanced.. the old school feel of a powerful caster is still possible in 1e, but held in check by those that know to just interrupt with readied actions. Going back to 1e for that reason number 1 primarily. Awesome video
Jess Montgomery makes a really good point. Another HUGE advantage of PF1 is the staggering amount of exceptional 3rd party products made for it; Freeport, all Midgard products (including Southlands), the perilous vistas series, the Lost Lands, the mythic companion books from Legendary games and so much more. All these companies have switched their products to 5e and in my opinion PF2 suffers greatly from it. My friends and me have so many of these products and we don't regret buying them.
It’s wild how disillusioned 5e players are finding 3.5e then naturally progressing to pathfinder 1e. The cycle repeats itself! It blew my mind the many poor decisions made in pathfinder 2e (min/max emphasis, +10/-10 crit system, level locked feats, etc). Having played it a few times I returned to pf1e with no regrets!
I'm late to the party here, but great video! I hope I can continue to find PF1e coverage from you, as the system deserves the attention, even being over a decade old. The whole WotC controversy really boosted PF2e, but it's just not crunchy in the way I love. I hope you branch out into the amazing 3PP content for PF1e, as you can find so many revolutionary ideas and concepts that change it into a whole new game!
The Pathfinder 1e starter set was excellent. I hadn't been a DM since 2nd addition DnD, but that starter made it really easy to dive back in. And for the DM on a budget, the Pathfinder 1e content is pretty inexpensive.
The tough choice I'm weighing right now is onboarding new players to the hobby. Definitely using PF, but trying to pick 1e vs 2e...I love PF 1e, certainly over D&D 5e. But trying to balance between love and experience with 1e and best experience for new players. Brand new players with 0 TTRPG experience. And I really want to hook them, lol
Definitely not an easy choice. Some players might respond well to 2e, but I think for ones that have a clear idea of what they want to play, 1e is best because it has more options.
I played my first ever ttrpg 2 weeks ago and it was pathfinder 1e. Personally I really liked it and the other 2 new players playing with me liked it to. But my DM helped us make our character before the game and encouraged us to use d20pfsrd to learn about our class and all that. So by the time the game started, I already knew what I wanted to do up to level 4 (we started at level 1).
In the last reason of this video, you precisely nailed with great words why I don't find much fun in dnd 5e and PF 2 systems. Playing with PF 1 set of rules in dnd 5 lore is my favorite setup today. I think I will follow and evolve in campaigns, but I will stick to pf1 rules for PF campaigns or Forgotten Realms modern campaigns. Yes, some tweaks to numbers in dnd 5 campaigns have to be adapted for equilibrium, but it's worth it.
I remember we were playing 4e then tried a couple games of 3.5 we we ended up having two core games one for 4e and one for pathfinder just after it came out back in the day it was brilliant!! ATM i am honestly just olaying AD&D solo and Shadowdark. Id love to get my hands on some 1e books for pathfinder
On the Corruption System: Even though Mind Flayers are not canon to Pathfinder/Golarion, I've always wanted to write up a 'Illithid Corruption' for use with Pathfinder. There is a 'class' in one of the psionic books for 3.5 edition that lets you slowly pick up Illithid like abilities, and that should be a good starting point for such a corruption (if I can ever get my lazy butt up and actually do it, that is, especially now since a certain game has made Mind Flayers popular 😅)
I’m tempted to shift to pathfinder (3.5e). Not a fan of 5e as a DM and my players are not fans of the OSR classes and their “sameness” (ie lack of class abilities).
Pathfinder 1E is the best and most fun. Every class has their time to shine. The potential customization is off the charts. 5E and Pathfinder 2E limits you so much.
@@dragonlord498 They do, they are just less crunchy and I am fine with that.. As a DM I can determine what my players can and cannot do so I don't need very specific guidelines about how to balance things around their party.. There are no limitations in 5e and PF 2e unless you lack some specific braincells...
In my current game we are using the Wordcasting alternative magic system to replicate the Shouts of Skyrim as our party is playing in the Nirn setting of Elder Scrolls as Nord Tongues
14:07 just recently our catfolk barbarian has completely wiped the floor with the wraith boss in Carrion Croun 2nd book, using an adamantine ranseur buffed with enlarge, bull's strength and haste. He did like 60+ damage per round that even halved was enough to absolutely destroy the boss 😂
Honestly I’m going back to the d20 system because I’m so bored with 5e. I like Pathfinder and DnD 3.5’s prestige classes where you have to earn and plan for that specialization. Weapons feeling different. And also just the sheer variety of books for the d20 system. You have access to Conan the Barbarian books, Pathfinder, World of Warcraft and DnD3.5 all can be used together with minimal effort.
Been trying to find videos on youtube to help me learn the system, since I'm seriously considering switching systems, and even try my hand as DM'ing. Unfortunately, whenever I try to search for such videos on youtue, it thinks I actually meant to find guides for 2E instead. Don't suppose anyone here could help me out and point me in the right direction.
For the bestiary don’t forget the Villain Codex and Monster Codex as well as unique monsters from individual adventures like the mask golem from Mask of the Living God.
would you be interested in doing a review of my 1e dragonball inspired race/class/prestige class/ and mythic path? i've been wanting to switch to a general RPG commenter channel for a while and i've been subscribed to here for a while and am looking to collab more
I would definitely check out the skald video I did. That will be a good starting point. Beyond that your party composition means a lot. Class features like Raging Song won't work well unless you have some strong front-line fighters to give the bonuses to.
Which is why it has creature creation rules in the back of every bestiary, barring that just /ke a few monster groups you like, find a theme and a couple universal abilities and whatnot then fit them in to make your own easy templates if you don't want to design them from the ground up. Use differing physical descriptors, remove some prominent trait maybe, or maybe make it into less of a physical challenge and see if you can generate a logic/tactics/ethical puzzle out of what you already have access to. Hope it helps even a bit~
I'm personally more interested in PF1e because of my experience playing Wrath of the Righteous and Neverwinter Nights 2. Some of the stuff I've heard that's different in 2e seems to deviate too much from what I'm used to. I'm sure a lot of other people are interested in 1e because of Kingmaker and WOTR.
1e was certainly intimidating for me at first glance, with all the first party stuff to sift through that has been added to the game overtime; third party/homebrew stuff is a mountain of content in and of itself.
I love Pathfinder, however if done right/wrong the gms will be forced to beef up monsters. Had a group where everyone but me could one hit kill raaks but I could get any skill check with a 60+, with perform being the highest of 185 before rolling
pathfinder 2 doesn't work above all the magic it is useless to say that it has been nerfed it is different everything is really wrong and there are no ways to improve because the critic system blocks everything you have to play it to understand what I am saying but as long as I can I will post on every video I see of people who still believes that it was necessary to improve path1 instead of creating path2 just make a warrior and put an archetype on him and it will be better than anything you can invent yourself I hate magic in path2 and I don't understand how paizo doesn't explain the thousands of questions that are asked about a game that is not even clear on certain points
Ha, I would consider 'Mechanically rewarding' as a negative. Anyone who is new to the game will have a much harder time than someone who knows all of the twists and turns in the mechanics. GURPS is my go to, as the mechanics are very simple (if overly detailed when you dig into the optional rules). There isn't any gotchas or deep understanding of feat trees you need to know.

We still play Pathfinder 1e and this August will be the game's 15th anniversary....too bad Paizo will not do anything for the event.
This is a wonderful video. Nothing has been able to match Pathfinder in my eyes to this day.
Our table runs dnd 3.5e, but we love supplementing with pf1e content from time to time
I was wondering if you ever tried Dreamscarred Presses Ulitmate Psionics.
This is the first time I’ve stumbled upon your channel and I had to say, well done. This was a really good video
And for the DM on a budget, the Pathfinder 1e content is pretty inexpensive.
i like how i got a dnd beyond add on this video
1e all the way, group loves all the numbers and ability to define your character so much.
Gonna be the DM for my friends, they finally gonna play Pathfinder 1e.
5E and Pathfinder 2E limits you so much.
agreed the limitations of both systems are why im not interested in them
Yeah if you like to build munchkins it's ideal. Most people, me included, hate that. Especially in TTRPGs...
@@NickStrife yep plus PF1 actually gives advice on homebrewing stuff which I'm fairly certain those 2 don't
The Ultimate Campaign book is the reason.
Like - 1e lets you run for office. It has rules for that. It has rules for literally WHATEVER you want. It's SO accommodating.
What's everyone's favorite class.
Mine is Alchemist
I've been theorycrafting an Arcanist conjurer idea for a Diety hunter.
It's kinda dope
Magus. My PC of 5+ years is a Kitsune Eldritch Scion (we needed s face... lol)
Also big fan of the Psionics rules.
@@barttmorris5592 Construct Rider and judicial use of the modified construct rules was some of the most fun I've had with dice.
For the bestiary don’t forget the Villain Codex and Monster Codex as well as unique monsters from individual adventures like the mask golem from Mask of the Living God.
5 reasons to play pathfinder 1E in 23:
1-5: Its not Pathfinder 2E. So stfu and take my money !
Thats at least my opinion :D
Having just finally had a look at Pathfinder 2E...I like the cut of your jib. 🙂
would you be interested in doing a review of my 1e dragonball inspired race/class/prestige class/ and mythic path? i've been wanting to switch to a general RPG commenter channel for a while and i've been subscribed to here for a while and am looking to collab more
1. It's not owned by Hasbro. 2. It's not sanitized like D&D
Paizo going down that route
3.5 and pathfinder 1e are the last not woke books. pf2e and DnD 5.5 are terribly woke.
Really ought to check out ( if you can find it) some older d&d “ fringe “ source books ( The Blue Book of Spells ) were very not p c
@mirieus this one reason I starting play Castles and Crusades
Love all of your content for the past couple of years. I'm fired up about learning of pathfinder 2e
Me d6 could you help me with a skald build?
I would definitely check out the skald video I did. That will be a good starting point. Beyond that your party composition means a lot. Class features like Raging Song won't work well unless you have some strong front-line fighters to give the bonuses to.
@@d6damage93 Thank you so much
Love the pf beastiary, but I find it too small. It needs to go on forever.
You've loved bestiary, yes, but what about 6th bestiary?
I'm personally more interested in PF1e because of my experience playing Wrath of the Righteous and Neverwinter Nights 2. Some of the stuff I've heard that's different in 2e seems to deviate too much from what I'm used to. I'm sure a lot of other people are interested in 1e because of Kingmaker and WOTR.
one more reason to add, races have bonuses and flaws.... +X to stat, -X to another stat... short races are slower then medium and large....
You need to update your video title, we are 2024!
Haha good idea.
might as well just make it 2025 now!
Hello good sir. Do you have any advice for running high level pathfinder? Starting a campaign at level 12 soonish.
Also PF1 still has psionics :D
1e was certainly intimidating for me at first glance, with all the first party stuff to sift through that has been added to the game overtime; third party/homebrew stuff is a mountain of content in and of itself.
Why do your S's have an echo
I love Pathfinder, however if done right/wrong the gms will be forced to beef up monsters. Had a group where everyone but me could one hit kill raaks but I could get any skill check with a 60+, with perform being the highest of 185 before rolling
I cut my teeth on the system.
Love From a Vaush Fan!
What?
The Bros and I RETVRNED to 1e after realizing 2e is just boring
Stealth ranged attacks are always the best in Bethesda games.
This comment seems its from a different video.
@30noir lol I have had that happen before, but I was referring to his fallout 3 comment in the later half of the video.
pathfinder 2 doesn't work above all the magic it is useless to say that it has been nerfed it is different everything is really wrong and there are no ways to improve because the critic system blocks everything you have to play it to understand what I am saying but as long as I can I will post on every video I see of people who still believes that it was necessary to improve path1 instead of creating path2 just make a warrior and put an archetype on him and it will be better than anything you can invent yourself I hate magic in path2 and I don't understand how paizo doesn't explain the thousands of questions that are asked about a game that is not even clear on certain points

Sticking to Pathfinder 1e, 2e is woke garbage
NO
Do you see an A in the word 'bestiary'? It's pronounced "bes-chee-eh-ree".
feel better? powerful?
