@@thundermistlures the difference in taste between a chrome fish and a dark one is huge and the difference in species pink and chum salmon are of the lowest quality and the indigenous peoples called them dog fish because they would feed it to sled dogs.
I'm only 11 so whenever me and my dad always go to Racine and Kenosha in Wisconsin to try to catch these fish. But I have seen the force of these fish and the salmon and trout that jump out of the water are at least 2 times the size of your first catch. This gets me a little scared when being on the boat marina docks but your videos have really helped me. I still have never caught a trout or salmon but I'm going out again this weekend. Thank you for the inspiration and all the tips! love your videos and again, thank you!
+MGSk8rz So glad to hear you are enjoying fishing at the young age of 11 - that means you have plenty of great fishing years ahead of you :) Hope the week end was a great one
+Brenner The Plane Glad to hear you're back at it and the ice fishing season is always a great way to enjoy winter....we are looking forward to using the new stingnose jigging spoons while ice fishing :)
I'm heading to that spot with my boat next week. Chum salmon, once they enter the rivers, are usually best SMOKED, not eaten "fresh fillets". Did you find that to be the case?
Great video Ivo, I'm really happy that you decided to upload this video. Compared to the salmon we get here in Wisconsin, that's a small one. Chinooks get up to 20-30 pounds easily down here & will fight for over 30+ min easily, brown trout as well. Overall great video, spawn sacks work best.
You seemed to get a good kick out of how hardy and energized these fish can be.. within 15 minutes of the location in this video you can use a float/drift setup and literally catch these chum all day long. I'm talking 50 fish days. It's a blast! I tend to run a 10-20lb 10'6" moderate fast rod so that you can horse them a bit.. otherwise some of these beasts never give up.. haha. It's not uncommon to catch a 20lb+ chum!
No problem! If you're ever around Vancouver in Oct or November and want to partake just shoot me a message. I'm no guide but I would be happy to show you some honey holes :). If you know what you're doing you can even catch a Coho, but they are far trickier ;).
Great video! May I ask: (i) what you're using for tackle (e.g., lb test line, length of rod, etc.); and (ii) whether this artificial lure is now available in your store? Wouldn't mind grabbing one in the lead up to fishing season on the Fraser River.
Hi Derek - I believe on that day I was using 20 lb braided line (Thunderbraid)with a fluorocarbon leader. The rod was a 7 foot rod and the lure is just being finalized now and will be available as s new product next year :)
Mr Thundermist I am from California and i just moved here in Vancouver. I am so excited to fish Salmon in Fraser river since Aug 2016 but never catch one. Where's the bridge you fish in the video, coz there's a lot of bridge here along Fraser River. May I know where was that bridge? Thanks
+Thundermist Lures I heared about Vancouver and its great life quality! Never been to Canada, but I guess life is good there in many places right?! I mean for sure if you love fishing, hunting, the outdoors..
Lol, I guide up here in BC, for rainbows, bulls, lakers, chinook and Kokanee. Your keeping a spawning chum lol?? Most ppl throw a bright silver chum back, oof
Hi there! I Great video and great catch! am looking at visiting the Fraser River by Chilliwak in October. Do you know where is a good place to cast from shore for salmon? Thanks a bunch!
You stated that you were using a barbless hook. One of the reasons we use barbless hooks is so you don't damage the fish when you release it. Another thing is, the hook has to be inside the mouth before you can keep it. When the hook comes into the fish from outside, as yours did, it is called snagging. A snagged fish has to be released. During spawning season the aim is to let fish get up stream to spawn. Snagging or flossing is not allowed. To catch a salmon, during spawning season, is hard as once they reach fresh water they quit eating. Your hook has to make them mad enough that they will bite it. A Russell Lure, or an FST work best. Bouncing off the bottom so the hook catches them in their bottom or running the line across the stream so that it goes across their open mouth (Flossing) is not acceptable.
thanks for writing in...when the fish was flopping/thrashing around in the net, because the hook is barbless, it very easily came out and then back in again - if you notice before I land the fish, the barbless hook was in fact in his mouth :)
You must be old school. Being the police. Read up on your regulations. Why don't you do that? Is freshwater regs different than saltwater when it comes to foul hooked fish? If you are not "intentionally" foul hooking fish then it's fine. Go read the regs. Salt water regulations clearly state this. You don't have to throw it back. Unless you quote fresh water regulations and they deem foul hooking differently, then I suggest you go police other people. Crying about a fish? A single fish? Really? What a travesty eh?
+michael meyer LOL :).....yes, i was allowed to keep it as I had my license and salmon tag as well - in fact, a ministry officer actually checked me that day and was very happy to see I was in total compliance :)

Hi Adam - good to hear from you and thanks for writing in :) When holding that salmon, I was holding under the gill cover (i.e. not in the gills) but besides that, he was not released, but rather, kept for a fresh salmon dinner that night :)
You just read my mind. I was wondering if you had taken it to eat. I'm completely new to fishing, I like the idea and the fact that you can get some fresh fish straight from the water. I don't know if its allowed in Britain to take fished fishes home, I was told by my dad that they only fished for sport and let them go free again. Which is what I see on UA-cam a lot. Getting off point here.... Did holding the fish from the gill cover prevent it from attacking? Or is that just the best way to grasp onto it? Thanks a lot for getting back to me by the way. I hope to go fishing one day. I was eating salmon steak and then searched Google for salmon fish, ended up going onto UA-cam to watch people fishing for them and this video was the result lol
Glad you are getting into fishing....you are going to love it as it is a great sport :) The reason I held the fish on the gill cover, was to ensure a good grip. When releasing fish, an alternative way to hold the fish is to grasp the area just in front of the tail fin with one hand, then put the other hand under the fishes neck area. Great to hear from you in Britain and glad you found our channel....we have plenty of tips there for you, which you will find helpful
***** Thanks for getting back to me, I hope to learn some more fishing tactics whilst watching your channel before I step forward and experience the real thing for myself. Have a nice day.
...you will notice that one of the 3 trebels was in the mouth and when the fish flopped around, it easily came out (due to no barb) and the second part of the trebel was now hooked
