  • A pride of lions on a leisurely stroll spots a giraffe having a drink. They instantly turn on hunt mode and try catch the giraffe off-guard!

28-year-old self-employed entrepreneur David Sher recorded the heart-pumping scene whilst camping in Xai Xai, Botswana he shared his footage and story with LatestSightings.com.
Xai Xai campsite is situated close to the Chobe River in Botswana. Tall trees, sandy riverbeds, and open plains surround the camp. You can hear birds singing and see the water moving slowly by. Sometimes, animals like elephants come close to the water where you can watch them quietly.
"During our drive to the Xai Xai Campsite, where we were set to spend the night, we found ourselves driving along a sandy road by the river. We didn’t have much hope at the time of spotting anything, but that’s when we stumbled upon a pride of lions-a pleasant surprise!"
“It was a very serene few hours spent observing their routine, from waking to quenching their thirst and leisurely strolling. But the calmness was soon disrupted as they spotted the giraffe. The change in their pace was instant. They went from lazily walking to laser-focused stalking, slipping into hunting mode!”
The lions crept up very quietly, getting closer and closer to the big giraffe. They spread out, each lion going to a good spot where they could jump out. The giraffe didn't see them at first because it had to bend its long neck down to drink. But then, all of a sudden, the giraffe saw the lions all around it. That's when the lions ran after the giraffe, and it took off running down the road with the lions right behind it. It was amazing to see how it all happened right there!
Lions hunting giraffes is really interesting to watch. When lions hunt giraffes, they have to work as a team because giraffes are not only big; they're also strong and can kick hard. They have to be smart and quiet as they sneak up on the giraffe. Then they rush out all at once to try to surprise it. Giraffes can defend themselves by kicking really hard, so the lions have to be careful.
"It was just beautiful to witness the sheer will to live from the giraffe and the lions' natural instincts in play-even if they didn't result in a kill."
After the chase, the tired lions went to lie down in the river bed. They looked like they were comforting each other because they missed catching the giraffe. David watched them quietly and took pictures as the sun was setting. The light was golden and beautiful. It was a perfect moment for photos. This is how lions learn: by trying and sometimes missing, just like we do when we are learning something new.

It was probably an opportunistic warm up as the sun went down. That or the Lions were being lazy and or knew that they had little luck of bringing down a full grown male giraffe with minimal numbers. Considering a lionesses hunting speed is 80km/h compared to a giraffes 60km/h, if they wanted to, they could have outrun it, but it’s a case of energy expenditure vs the uncertain likelihood of them actually being able to bring down a bull giraffe.

@@reginarichards6261🙌🏼 100% valid points, but yes ultimately that was a huge male! Even if they got a hold of him, it would have been potentially a very risky move unless they had the pride males for leverage. Giraffe calves and females are one thing…bulls are next level power (I’ve seen the damage they do to each other firsthand let alone predators) the size of their heads as it is! and if he decides to swing at them….Lordy.

The diesel engine sound masked the sound of the approaching lions. It's why the giraff didn't move. These things are loud af. If lions figured it out by themselves, and used the diesel engine sound to mask their own sounds of approaching, that's an amazing thing by itself. But who knows.

I'm sorry, this shouldn't be allowed by whoever runs that reserve/the government. Cameras can do a great job zooming in nowadays, there's no need to not only get that close to a chase, but to constantly keep moving towards it. You have no idea where the animal(s) are going to want to run, and you risk altering what the outcome would've otherwise been - indeed, the giraffe basically did a u-turn towards the vehicle. It reminds me of a video I saw from a reserve (I think Kruger, might be wrong) where the amount and proximity of cars seemed to essentially severely limit the escape options of a gazelle, who was promptly killed by its pursuers after practically running into a car - something that might not have happened otherwise. What I'm seeing in this video is shameful, they should've stopped where the other car in the vid did. But I doubt reserves/governments take this stuff seriously, from what I've seen anyway. Wouldn't want to discourage shitty tourists when they need that tourism money.
Beyond that, just the cheek of these guys to send in the video being taken by the driver, wtf. Like yeah guys, send the vid with the armpit zoom-in, and not from the passenger looking out the window. All this really ruined what would've been a cool video, imo

Videos like these are not uncommon. Correct me if you think I'm wrong, but you're not supposed to impact natural moments. I think there should be a minimum range tourist cars can go to these situations. When animals are so close they're running around your car, that's too far. Impeding space could hinder or help either animal... for clicks? Maybe I'm ignorant, but it seems unethical. It's fine in small quantity, but now it seems like a cowboy industry gone out of control.
