Your reviews are so engaging. I love the reading you did from Cider with Rosie and the enthusiasm for a book that I probably would have overlooked. Now I can’t wait to find a copy. Looking forward to your announcement!
Couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing the audio clip with us, your enthusiasm for Cider with Rosie was contagious! And it is a book I have overlooked. I will be sure to remedy that. Your mention of memoirs, made me wonder if you have come across the publisher Slightly Foxed. They publish many memoirs like Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson , A Country Man's Notebook by Adrian Bell, Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield, Letters To Michael by Charles Phillipson, and so many more including Cider with Rosie. I have read a few, and plan to read more from this publisher. Passing along in case you are not familiar with them. Link below to a pairing they offer with Cider with Rosie. foxedquarterly.com/shop/pair-cider-with-rosie-lark-rise/
I really enjoyed your July wrap up, I did have a little chuckle when you mentioned who wrote A Dissertation Upon Roast Pig!! I would definitely like to read Cider with Rosie, I've been wanting too for a while!! Thank you for a lovely video and a lovely wrap up!! Have a great weekend!!xx
@@adayofsmallthings I hadn't heard of him until your video, the book does sound interesting though!! Cider With Rosie is definitely going to be added to books I want to read!!
Good to hear you liked Lamb, keep reading him and the others. The memoir of Laurie Lee was an excellent choice. The image of him wrapped in the Union Jack delivered to his new home was striking. The possible presentation on memoirs has potential. There are many books to choose from. "Such, Such Were the Joys" by Orwell is a good example.
Yes I do! Thanks for encouraging me to read it on the plane. I would like to read more memoirs. Thanks for the recommendation. Will go have a search now!
I feel the same way with Babel. And thank you for sharing your thoughts about it…I was disappointed by the book and felt pressured to like it because many held it as one of their favorite books of all time. I just felt like the narrator/historian in the novel is a bit biased. I have this feeling that the book will judge me for asking questions.
Thanks for sharing! Yes I understand what you mean, the buzz around a book raise our expectations. But we can like or dislike a book regardless of what others say :)
Not familiar with "Wild" but the other books I have read and while as a vegetarian I skipped through a lot of Lamb's book I love his "Elia" essays and regularly reread. "Cider with Rosie" is a gem. "Babel" was a major disappointment. From the outset I sensed an agenda of issues that for me became a Hyde Park soapbox that constantly interrupted and could not be ignored. I too rarely read modern novels and I could not ignore all the press as she has become massively popular with modern readers who must be fed an anti-colonial stance at every turn. She is a good writer but her promulgation of her various causes get in the way. I was hoping for another "Dr. Norrell"....alas!! Nice work!!
@@adayofsmallthings I’d forgotten Lambs essay on on Pork was an essay in Elia (part 1 if I recall) not published elsewhere . Memory is not great ! Yes I wish there was a sequel to Strange and company !
Yeah, when I heard you were going to read Dissertation upon Roast Pig, I was worried how you were going to react as a native Chinese speaker. I read the essay when I was thirteen (as I thought the title sounded funny and couldn't help myself) and I found it rather icky even then...but knowing the context, (which of course I didn't have at thirteen), sounds rather more balanced.
Hi! Very interesting to hear your experience reading the essay. I had no idea about the context either so I'm very thankful to come across that essay online. Lamb is such a character!
It's interesting. I always forget that you are a native Chinese speaker as you are more well-read, passionate, and knowledgeable about English literature than most native English speakers. Those things aren't mutually exclusive as you are living proof.
Thank you! I don’t feel very well-read or knowledgeable but that’s so kind! I guess people are interested in different things. I happen to like reading in English 🤔 Maybe because people have been very kind to me here :)
@@adayofsmallthingswell, you are certainly a mentor to me with respect to English Literature. I have picked up several recommendations from watching your reviews.
Babel was a rather huge disappointment to me. I really liked the premise with language as the backbone of the magic system. The book started well (though I expected it’s an adult fiction. Turned out it’s YA which I am not a fan). But the story and/or the execution just went south. The writing style wasn’t great neither. I agreed with your comments which I won’t be able to express myself. But so much potential in the concept with disappointing execution.🫣

Thank you! It's a lovely memoir especially if you can get hold of the audiobook. Hope you like it :)

I had the exact same experience with Babel! The patronizing tone was way too much for me.
Phew 😮💨 I’m glad I’m not the only one. Thanks for telling me that!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Babel! It’s a shame - definitely not Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell!

Yes the premise has a lot of potential I totally agree. Oh well I guess the author aimed for different things. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
