How to - Range Finder Sight-In with Randy Newberg, Hunter

- Randy Newberg uses his Leupold range finders as critical tools for his hunting and shooting. A high quality range finder is key to correct yardage, reducing the likelihood of poor shots that result in bad outcomes.
Many people assume their range finder is correctly aligned. Most quality range finders, like the Leupold RX-1200 TRB Randy is using, are built to properly along the laser and the sighting picture.
Yet, in many tests with lower quality (not always lower price) range finders, you will find a lot of variance that could cost you a hard-earned opportunity.
Sighting in a range finder is very easy, as shown in this video. If you find your range finder is off, you don't have many options. You can get a new device of a higher quality. You can also adapt, knowing where it is actually hitting and adjusting your point of reading to that location, though that is a big pain in the heat of the moment.

This is why I watch your channel Randy never thought to check it the way you explained it Thanks for the info ..not something you check when your thinking about your hunt !!!
Glad it might help. Good luck this season.
This video really helped me decide that the extra money is worth it, thank you
Very good advice! I'll be doing this after every rangefinder purchase from now on. Thanks!
Yes, best to do it in the store prior to a purchase. Thanks for watching.
Well I'll be damned ... All these years and this never occurred to me .... and now after a quick check mine is off a 1\4 inch to the left of the cross hairs ... Thank you Randy for this tip .. maybe this next fall I'll actually fill my freezer .... greetings from ABQ NM amigo !
Glad it helped. Good luck this season.
Very good information. I use a Leupold rx1200i so there shouldn't be any problem. 😉
Whew... mine's on! Thanks for the tip
Very interesting, never heard of this before....will have to check mine out.
Hopefully all is fine. You should see the look on people's faces when they see their range finder is off.
Great explanation thank you
Thankyou
Thanks again randy, for the tip
Hope it helps a few people from heading to the hills with a bum range finder.
My Nikon Laser bang on the cross hairs, mind you I would expect a Nikon product to be bang on for the price!
If it's off what do you do, throw it in the garbage or is there a fix?
Aloha Randy, always enjoy your viewing your adventures! There are times when I just know that my range finder is not giving me a correct range. Now I understand why. I've been doing a lot of bow hunting from stands lately using the ANG mode... using your tip: My finder seems to give me proper readings both in vertical & horizontal when in regular mode, but the horizontal in ANG mode. Should I look to upgrade?
Hmm. I've not encountered that. I would contact the manufacturer and see if they have any ideas. Might need to be replaced if it does not handle the trigonometry required for angle compensation.
Wow, never occurred to me.
Hope it helps give more comfort that yours is aligned properly.
Randy Newberg, Hunter going to check when I get home from work!
How do you sight it in if it is off
Just about to ask the same thing. Is there an adjustment on most range finders or do you return to the manufacturer for repair?
Jacob Tudor send it back and let them know why.
There are no adjustments. As I mentioned in the video description, you have two choices; 1) Adjust for it by knowing where the laser is hitting (not a very good option), or 2) contact the manufacturer and ask for a new one.
Randy - is there a way to watch the new season of Fresh Tracks online? I can't seem to find anything unfortunately.
The first day of our New Mexico elk hunt goes live tomorrow. On UA-cam we are doing a lot of the episodes in a much longer day-by-day format than what is allowed on TV. And when those day-by-day formats are done, we will load the compressed version that ends up on TV.
Excellent news. Just trying to learn as much as I can before my first elk hunt, a late archery hunt, down here in Arizona. Thanks, Randy!
This guys boring
