Looks great, Russ. It's nice that you are helping out Rt L. We are all learning a lot.
Thank you!
This is pretty much the technique I used for painting my kitchen cabinet doors and they came out amazing! Friends actually think we had our cabinets sprayed. They are shocked when we say we rolled and brushed them. Benjamin moore advance is just awesome paint! It levels out so smooth and it dries extremely hard. I'm currently painting our trim and doors in our home with the same paint and technique and it's coming out so good that sometimes I'm in disbelief that I did it! Lol! Thanks so much for your videos and time!
Hello
Thanks for sharing that! I’m happy that your trim and doors are coming out so Good! Are you using the Satin or Semi Gloss sheen?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow satin.
Nice!
What brush/roller did you use? THX
@pearlperlitavenegas2023 I used a microfiber roller. It should be in the video!
Impressive results! I have wanted to paint my oak cabinets for so long but spraying them seemed like a daunting task. I might your method!
Hello Elias
Thank you! The Benjamin Moore Advance paint does a great job in leveling out!
Russ
Some recommend lightly sanding between paint coats? What do you think?? I know you don't sand between coats
Hi - if you spray then yes, but if you roll no. Make sure your paint is strained and use a good roller that doesn’t shed!
Thank you for this video. what type of brush are you using? any special type alike Microfiber roller
Hi Rooter
I’m using a Natural Bristle Brush to apply primer!
Russ
Looks great!
Question, I used Bin shellac as a primer for some MDF doors and top coated it with SW latex (not enamel like in your video). About a day later I noticed alligator cracking all over!
I can’t recall if I didn’t scuff it prior to the latex but what would have caused that? I am a bit hesitant to use bin again since that.. thanks
Hi
Thanks for your question! I have never had any problems like that using Zinsser BIN or top Coating with latex or waterborne paints. Question 1) how did u apply the BIN?
2) how many Bin Coats
3) how many top coats
4)timeframe from start to finish with primers and paint
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow
I used a roller to apply, only one coat of bin. I believe I waited about 2 hour to recoat. I applied two coats of latex and sprayed it. I remember the bin was very smooth, glossy almost. Maybe I needed to rough the surface more to get it to adhere?
What size and nap roller. Was it microfiber or white woven or brown and spongy?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShowthis was before I saw your video, so if was a 6” white one 1/2” nap. It was not microfiber.
Ok yes way too thick. Apply thin coat. Let dry. Apply another thin coat if needed
what type of paint did you use? latex?
I used a hybrid paint. It’s part Oil and Latex. It levels out great!
I like your show it's very informative. I was an painting apprentice back in the 90s I'm just now coming back. We always spray cabinets. I like brushing and rolling. How are you able to sell this to your clients.
Hi Robert
Have you worked with todays newer paints? Like the Benjamin Moore Advance or Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim Urethane.
Russ
I worked with the emerald but my next project in my own house I'm going to try the advanced. So my question is are you getting near to a sprayed finish with rollers and brushes. And I have to assume that whatever you're getting your customers are very happy with the results. Thank you for getting back to me so quickly.
Yes I am getting closer to a spray finish by priming first with BIN, then top coating with paints that level out great provided the conditions are right. Have you ever rolled BIN?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShowno. I watched a lot of videos on priming cabinets yours included. it seems like Ben's shellac is really the most popular primer to transition from a varnish type finish to paint. I will definitely give it a try. I Like your show thanks for sharing with us.
Hi Robert
Yes BIN is the Best adhesive Primer, especially over varnish!
Russ
A fine job Russ! Great information.
Thank you Tom!
How long do I have to wait after bin primer to start painting?
45 minutes. But that could change based off ur current weather conditions!
Can you please tell me what type of paint you are using? Oil based or some water based stuff?
Hi rabon
Benjamin Moore's Advance is a low VOC Water Reducible Alkyd. This means that Advance is an alkyd that uses water as a carrier instead of solvents. ... They are basically combining the benefits of oil and water-based enamels into a hybrid enamel.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Thank you sir. God bless!!

@@RussOlinatzPaintShow thanks!!
Hi what paint sheen did you use to get the shine?
Hi
Satin
Russ
Are you using the same kind of microfiber roller cover that you used with the primer?
Hi
Yes the Same one! 1/4 inch Nap!
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow thanks👍
No problem!
What are you using for the stand to put the doors on ?
Hi Jr
I’m using a lazy Susan. I will do a video for you!
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Perfect thanks what brushes would you recommend to use?
Hi
I like to use the Corona Excalibur Chinex bristle brush.
Russ
Do you have the link to purchase the lazy Susan thanks
@@jrsblogs I just put up Lazy Susan Video. There will be a link in the description of the Video.
Awesome work!
Thank You Jared!
What color green is that? Great job btw!
Hi Eric
Thank you! It’s Ben Moore Stonecutter
Russ
Russ is that an arroworthy baracuda frame?
Yes it is.
Sweet
We can’t get them at our local shop
I think it’s a back east thing
Also an arroworthy nap?
@@deekoh3996 yes 1/4 inch microfiber. where u from?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow im in Bakersfield California unfortunately lol
Love it
Thanks!
This was a great video! Are you using a 4” or 6” roller? Do you mind leaving the link to the one you’re using in the video. Thank you!
Hi Rodney
It’s a 4 inch roller. Click the link in the description of the video for my Amazon Storefront. Then click “Brush and Roll Cabinets “ You will find it there!
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow thanks for the information. For some reason the link takes me to the 6” instead. Also how do you keep your roller from sliding? Mine likes to slide more then roll while painting my cabinets. Thank you!
@@rodney254 HI- I just checked and all they have is the 6 inch now. you can try your local hardware store. You want to also buy the red frame that I am using. there is a picture of it on the roller sleeve!
Hi Russ, do you sand the first topcoat before applying the second coat of paint?
Hi Edward
Just a very light sand to remove any specs in paint. Make sure to strain your paint. The 1st coat will still be soft so next coat will adhere with no problems. If you sand, be careful not to sand off your first coat. If I see any specs or hairs in paint I either do a light sand or use a taping blade to remove them. Do you have a similar project?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow Thanks for the reply Russ. So, if the first coat has no debris or blemishes, I can go straight to the second coat? Yes, we're painting our kitchen cabinets
Hi Edward
Yes you can! You don’t want to sand to aggressively. If you put deep scratches in your 1st top coat, the scratches might show through on your 2nd top coat. So make sure to strain your paint and use the 1/4 inch microfiber roller. What did you prime with?
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I used the zinsser bin you recommended, and we had it tinted at the paint store. We're trying to follow your video exactly. we're doing a test run on one cabinet door to perfect our technique
Ok Great! So you are painted over Stained and Polyurethane oak cabinets? What is your top coat color?
They do have the look of a sprayed finish! What is your opinion on foam covers Russ?
Thanks again my friend!
Hi Jack
Thank you my friend! I don’t like to use them. They create air bubbles.
Russ
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow okay thank You my friend 💙
Do you like them?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow I've done some table tops with them, then laying the poly off with a pure bristle china brush, but I prefer to spray varnish on large surfaces.
Hi Jack
Nice! Do you get bubbles when you roll the polyurethane?
Russ
How long do you need to wait between one side of the door before flipping it over and painting the other side? I know Advance has a long drying time. Great video!
Hi Josh
16 hours. So figure a day! Don’t try otherwise!
Russ
So you only had to wait 2 hours after priming to paint then?
Yes
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow cool thanks for the reply. It seems like most be wait about 24 hours for the primer to dry/cure. Is there actually any benefit to waiting 24 hours instead of 2 hours?
Hi
The Zinsser BIN dries real fast, depending on your heating conditions. You can top coat in 45 minutes provided it dries out. If you wait longer than 3 days the primer will harden up too hard and top coat might not adhere that well. Do you plan on doing 2 coats of the BIN?
thanks again for the reply. I’ve just been doing one coat of BIN with my HVLP on the doors. I waited a day and sanded then shot those with BM Advance. But today I’m going to prime the cabinet bodies with BIN and I’d like to spray them with BM Advance today as well but could not find an answer if this is ok or not. The can does say you can recoat in 45 mins but I thought them meant recoat with primer in that case. But if you think I should be ok in 2 hours to spray BM advance then I will try that. Thank you
Yes you should be fine. If you do 2 coats of Bin, you can lock down color in same day then do just 1 top coat of advance and be done with it in 1 day. The Advance takes at least 16 hours before recoating!
How about a tack cloth first?
To do what with?
pick up any dust or debris.@@RussOlinatzPaintShow
water base or lacquer/ enamel paints
It’s a y, waterborne alkyd paint!
Love the finished product. I like the thin nap microfiber rollers so much better than the foam ones. The problem with the foam ones, is you get bubbles and while Advance and Emerald Urethane flow level very well, it seems every once and a while when using foam rollers some bubbles don't escape and level out properly and you see some dimples
Thanks for sharing that. What kind of rollers did u use?
I liked the first color better.
Hi Denise
The Primer?
Russ
Oh sorry didn't realize that was primer lol. But I love the primer color better. 😊
😀
Advance is nice paint but takes a long time to cure
Yes it takes 16 hours before re coating! What paint do you like to use?
@@RussOlinatzPaintShow pre cat lacquer
Nice! Does that Yellow in time?
