If norbit was a women it would be a tragedy because its a subversion of power dynamics its silly and funny!! its funny because its unbelievable under the patriarchy. ironicly its why weomon sympathize with norbit and men just laugh without a second thought.
You know the saying laughter is the best medicine, when handled correctly comedy can help us address and heal wounds within ourselves and our community without it being too painful
I remember as a kid, i was so confused when i was feeling bad for him and everyone around me was laughing. I thought “why does nobody feel bad for him?”
ALSO I just realized that scene in the end where the whole town stands up against the Latimores is fantastic because not only was Norbit standing up to his abuser but the community was too!! The Latimores were TERRIBLE bullies in that town so this plus the psychological horror perspective just makes the ending that much more impactful!
Bro the car gaslighting is like someone secretly recorded my mom talking to me growing up. I found out she was a narcissistic mother before it was trendy to call everyone who upset you a narc. She would completely twist reality and then threaten me or actually be violent. Is I hadn’t been in therapy for yrs that would have been wayyy more triggering.
It seems super exaggerated to people who haven't experienced it. My birth giver was the same way, an abvser, a cheater and a gaslighter. (TW for abuse descriptions) She once flew out of the house after my dad flailing a butcher knife around and slamming on his truck windows. She also pushed him down the front porch stairs at one point, we lived on a cliff that the stairs were directly parallel to so thank god he stopped at the bottom. It would have absolutely fit right into Norbit. Can't believe anyone found this movie genuinely hilarious, but I do laugh at the ridiculous sh!t she would do because it's just so unfathomable for any sane person to do it. I don't think people who haven't witnessed it firsthand can always really see the horror behind it.
I just relived the most infuriating memory and it’s weird because if I told you about my life you’d probably consider other events much worse but for some reason this memory makes my blood boil the most. My mom was driving us to a family cookout and started going off on me because I wasn’t smiling enough..? I finally kinda snapped back at her and said I don’t have to be constantly smiling I’m just sitting here not bothering you. She slammed on brakes and screamed that she can just take me home. I should’ve took the offer but I wanted to see my folks so I just sat there quiet. She kept going off on me like screaming on me like a maniac to the point I started to cry. That didn’t stop her finally I started to scream back and she pulled out her mf phone and started recording me. Dude. I saw red. She threatened to take me home again and I was just like fawk it take me home. I still feel the pain of laying in bed realizing I’d never have a good mother let alone any type of normal relationship with her. She was diagnosed with NPD the next year and surprise she cussed out her therapist. I was only 16 dude I’m 27 now but that day is burned into my mind.
Not to mention she is a darker woman compared to her skinny light skin competitor who is represented as a nice sweet lady. The timing of when this was made this was done a lot (colorism). These images are dangerous
The "inspiration" for this movie was based on a video that Eddie Murphy and his brother Charlie saw of an overweight woman slapping her skinny husband around, and they thought it was funny and would make a great story line for a movie. They wrote it together.
This movie made me so uncomfortable when I remember first seeing it, and it was more than just the fat jokes. Watching a person being abused for an hour and a half was rough. I love that this video was suggested to me!
Norbit changed my life, I hated the movie until oneday I broke down and realized I was Norbit. I cried. The scene that really resonated with me was when was laying next to Resputia at night. I know what its like laying next to your abus3r while they sleep well, and you are restless, hurt, and wish u had the nerve to put a pillow over their face.
i hope you are doing well and have found the gentle, caring, never painful love that we are all meant to experience. if not in someone else, then in yourself. 🩷
The movie Norbit kinda reminds me of those "kids shows" that are actually some kind of subliminal horror. The colors are bright, everyone's smiling and laughing but actually paying attention just makes you feel disturbed or sad inside. He's literally being abused and manipulated in EVERY way possible and somehow everyone's just.. kinda fine with it. It feels more like a sick joke rather than a lighthearted comedy
Reminds me of fairly odd parents… I realized he was treated horrible by everyone and it made me so sad to realize as an adult cus it was my fav show and my life went very similarly, ironically
I always felt that this movie was ahead of its time, It showed how men can get abused but people either ignore it or play it for laughs. It reminded me of Why did I get married? where people hated Mike for abusing Sheila but Angela was abusive to Marcus but that was played for laughs…😒. I remember seeing a video of someone that was abused by his wife and when he finally divorced and called the cops on her people in family had the nerve to say stuff like “well what did you do to her” and “she was probably going through something” like… 🤦🏽♀️
Marcus was also living off of her, spending her money and in the same breath giving her stds oh and let’s not forget the cheating.. how was he abused? Granted she should have left his dusty ahh where she found him, but how was abused again?
I'm so glad you addressed this. I honestly still like the movie, but at most parts, it obviously doesn't age well. Even still, my relationship with it kind evolved, from watching it as a kid for the cussing to some background noise with the occasional chuckle to it almost becoming like a dramedy. It's obviously intended as a comedy but like you said in the beginning, I noticed the community around Norbit save for his immediate family was very protective of him, but it isn't like they babied him nor chastised him for his choices. They wished him happiness with Rasputia because they saw how much he loved her and what she meant to him, especially with how she grew up protecting him. I found it sad how even at points when he was obviously still intimidated by her, he still loved her and kind of just took it as "how she was". He wasn't even a pushover, he asserted his opinion when he could, but when she started amping up ways she could hurt him (the cheating being one of the ways) that's when he became resentful and less open. Even if she didn't cheat or was able to hide it, I fear he would've stayed because she and the Lattimores were all he had, like she once asserted. Kate was his light at the end of the tunnel, despite the fact I have a sort of gripe with the light skin favoritism, she symbolizes.
We have no idea how that woman looked like or behaved like...? You can't repeat behavior that you've never witnessed. Psychological trauma doesn't work like that.
Firstly.. you have a beautiful reading voice! Secondly I do wonder if anyone has spoken about how rasputia is a overweight dark skinned woman who is mean, abusive & angry to Kate who is a slim light-skinned woman who is sweet & kind…
I haven’t seen any videos about it but on twitter many people have discussed it. Recently a tweet by KevOnStage about black men dressing up as black women has started conversations and many people have brought up your point.
It is absolutely a colorist movie. All kinds of awful, stereotypical tropes. Someone gave me a bunch of dvds and this one went in the trash, right where it belongs!
As a plus sized black woman, i HATED this movie. So many plus sized dsbw got compared to either Rasputia or Precious when getting bullied (whether you actually looked them or not). Hell I still hate both of those movies for existing in my adulthood.
Precious was really a piece of 💩. Norbit got to be my favorite Eddie Murphy movie. I'm bout to turn this off cause she gone make me not like it. I was sad when she hit Norbit with that speaker.
@@2villainy It is slightly different when you take the anti-blackness of it all. But I don't feel like diving into that because I just don't have the energy. Google is free
Thank you for starting a conversation I've been internally begging to be brought to light. I will never forget the day my abusive narcissistic mother showed me the movie Norbit. I was an undiagnosed Autistic & ADHD child who my mother would regularly beat, punch, slap and choke. She was also abusive to my Autistic uncle who lived with us. I remember not laughing as much as her during the movie cuz Rasputia was just LIKE my mother. She treated me like Norbit, and she also used the dog (who was bonded most to me and my only source of love in that home) and would always threaten to get her euthanized out of spite. She didn't allow me to have friends and even when I went off to college, she would spy on me. She also LOVED the Madea movies. She loved any movie with an abusive female lead. Also, in our household, lots of dirty family secrets were swept under the rug. When she found out her husband SA'ed me as a child, did she kick him out? No. Instead she had the whole family lie to Child Support Services and I had to live with him, hug him on holidays and keep up the pretense that we were one happy family. I'm so glad I'm now free and no contact with her. And the black community really needs to stop coddling abusers and predators. Every one of my uncles (minus the autistic one) were predators and abused many of the women in our family (including me). There is a generational cycle of abuse and cover up that goes back generations. It's sickening.
I’m glad you made it out 💓 I was also silenced as a child SA victim. It wasn’t our fault. We were failed. I hope I can eventually go no contact like you.
You are extremely intelligent, well-spoken, and talented. It’s crazy how you articulated your ideas into this video and not once was I lost on what you meant.
this video made me understand why i felt so uncomfortable watching this movie. thank you for your insight and your commentary on how the movie ties to black people's struggles with handling trauma and suffering in general, it was really informative to people like me who are outside of the community.
Dude, I went through this myself and it went right over my head. No one takes your trauma seriously when you’re back and will laugh along, even other black people and that just goes to show
the movie is also colorist i dont know if anyone else noticed but it follows the trop of a darkskin male main character needing to get away from his darkskin often mean/sassy partner so that he can get to a lightskin more feminine and nicer woman ive noticed this trope in other movies but norbit was when i realized that "oh this is a thing"
I mean do you say anything when they make a black women gets with a powerful white man I feel like they do these things to divide the black man and women
I remember finding this movie unsettling and kind of scary as a young teen, I'm glad someone else agreed because anyone whos lived under similar situations probably laughed as little as I did. Absolutely his worst movie. Anyone would be terrified to have a Rasputia in their life.
I think the sentiment in this video explains why I never liked the show Everybody Hates Chris; I just thought it was me being too sensitive to find the humor in it because the mom's actions hit too close to home (ie getting yelled at/punished for things I didn't do or simple mistakes)
@ yes it does. You’re manifesting…. Rochelle got a lil hot because she’s trying to provide a healthy family despite systematic injustice. Some of our parents are on drugs and or abuse us and traffic their children. But ultimately. We will all hear the gospel and will be held accountable if we harkened …. Only so much I’ll be able to blame on parents. Christ heals all wounds.
Rewatching this movie nearly 20 years later, I forgot why it was ever funny. I felt so much frustration for Norbit, who was horrifically abused by the Latimore family and constantly belittled by Mr. Wong. With a bit of a tweak on the tone of the movie, it would’ve been on the same level as “Precious”.
I view norbit as a tale of a man rising up from his abusers and finally getting a happy ending. I believe this is to remind people that no matter how it gets, you can still find light at the end of the tunnel.
Good analysis. Her being obese is a visual metaphor. She “takes up all the space” in their relationship. Norbits mental delay due to being thrown from a car is a symbol of his psychological absence/emptiness/skinnyness. The same psychological empty space is taken up by rasputias narcissism. Compare rasputia to the character Janie played by natalie deselle in the show “Eve,” whom was warm and funny/nurturing and occasionally sensual without compromising herself for others or violating them. Janie being obese on eve is a visual metaphor for her overall love and connection to others, aka “more to love.”
This was an outstanding analysis! There are SO many layers. I never took the time to fully watch the movie because I feel that darker skinned black women of size are often stereotyped as harsh, masculine and abusive and I don’t like that. Notice how in this movie Norbits new love interest is portrayed as everything Respusha is not - loving, feminine, thin, and fair skin. I love how you centered his pain, abusive relationship and possible intellectual disability. These things are often unaddressed or under addressed in the black community especially among our boys. I am a loving auntie in my 40s and seeing vids like this give me hope. Us adults have left our youth a messy environment and society to inherit but analysis like this give me hope for our future. 😭💕🙏🏽 I love how this younger generation has the language to name and frame complex issues.
I agree. What that woman does to that man is awful. I think it would have been better if rasputia had been a smaller woman and there were less fat jokes tbh but the point is…. Poor norbit
This movie came out when I was in like elementary school i think…the way I was bullied and called Rasputia bc I was also fat n black… like oh !! but yeah this movie is high key very sad a majority of it I always felt so bad for norbit ;;
@AwkwardBlackGal613 I'm so sorry to hear that. It's crazy because Precious is a victim. She's a victim of abuse, colorism, racism, etc. The fact that people use her as an insult shows that it's not about someone's character but simply about who they are. Precious was everything but an angry girl. How can you watch that movie and dare to call someone "Precious" as an insult? The moral of the movie is that SHE IS PRECIOUS regardless of the hardships she went through. Whoever said that to you is a despicable human being. Don't let the ignorance of others make you hate that movie. The movie is, unfortunately, a testimony of the experiences that some black girls go through in their communities. It gave them a voice. It fails in a lot of instances. However, overall, it is a faithful depiction of reality.
Thank you for this video. For years I've been going insane because every time I've bought up this exact argument I got called a killjoy. This movie has always made me incredibly nauseous. I felt so crummy for Norbit and this movie always disturbed me since I was a child.
It poses as a comedy but it definitely fits better as a horror. Norbit did Dr. Doofensmirtz before Dr. Doofensmirtz. I am glad that you acknowledged that this film is fatphobic and possibly colorist since Rasputia and her brothers are pretty dark compared Norbit's love interest. It's also good to laugh at your problems, even though it's not necessary comfronting issue but it's better than constantly deelling on your issues.
I don't condone any type of discrimination or phobias that are bigotry in disguise but a key part of the message in Norbit I believe is "What if sometimes the stereotypes are true?"
I love your analysis very insightful and very true. I'm curious if he *actually* intended for the undertones to be probing and thought provoking, or if he just is perpetuating the same cycle intentionally. And evenso, despite his efforts, it continues to perpetuate the cycle due to the collective consciousness. That being said, again, love your take.
There have been a number of so called comedies through the years that when i've watched them made me oddly uncomfortable, even though I understood that there were parts that were funny, the underlying plot and everything that was actually going on was horrible 😢
Right, I think another good example of this is 'A thin line between love and hate'. It's a funny movie but it was obviously a horror film in disguise since it can show you how betrayal makes people do terrible things and how lying can end up getting you killed.
Well also in The Help the chocolate pie 🥧 scene is funny but it’s still a movie meant to be serious subject matter yet there’s a bunch of funny scenes in it.
Last year UA-cam introduced me to UA-cam horror short films. This year they put me on to black content creators discussing films. Thank you I love Norbit and it's not even Eddie Murphy's funniest film. Even when you changed the tone a bit of the seatbelt scene, as soon as Murphy said, "that's not science" I cracked up. Like you said black people, but usually historically oppressed people, rely on humor to an almost detrimental level, but also to bring things to light that causes an eventual change. To still have the scene be funny even when it's such a real and sad situation, shows the talent Murphy has. And to use humor to bring realness to light in a way that very few actors/comedians could is again a testament to his talent. Interesting you didn't go deeper into the complexions of the characters. Great video, thank you for your perspective
It’s actually scary that as black people we’ve been trained to just laugh at the pain, it’s probably a handful of individuals who didn’t see this movie a slight but of scary but now, it’s almost not even the same movie
Nothing about Norbit was slow to me. He was just too nice and a nerd. It was never giving mentally handicap. I wish you would've stop obsessing and repeating him being mentally delayed. Cause its not true.
He is very clearly mentally delayed. Don't act in denial. Being mentally delayed is not the end of the world, and honestly, it irritates me as someone who is mentally delayed similarly to norbit to be treated like a disease 👎🏾
Norbit is like Everybody hates Chris, Norbit's Parents didn't love him, Mr. wrong didn't love him, the two White Boys didn't like him at school ,Norbit's Wife didn't Love him, the only one who loved him was Kate !!!
I hated the movies from this time and how they portrayed bigger black female characters… I’m surprised that people even allowed this movie to be made (it would get him cancelled in our current timeline)… it does have funny moments but for any bigger female the wife’s name is still a hurtful insult… I believe if he were to remake it now, it would get him canceled… there are so much better ways to deal with abuse then with the abuse of another group… Good review
Wow I really like your video on this movie!! This was my favorite movie as a child and I agree that the more you watch as you age the more you come to truly understand and see how sad the movie is without the comedy. I like that you highlighted that everyone is ignoring how they are also guilty of the same violence yet used laughter to ignore the issue/hypocrisy. I think I watched this movie last in 2020 and even just seeing the cut scenes (where his pup was killed and where Rasputia poured the acid on the potato) made me realize now 4 years later that her threats are very scary because she's not saying empty threats. Great video!!!! 😁
This really makes me feel SEEN listening to you talk about the very thing I ALWAYS felt about this movie but whenever I would try to say it I would basically be told that I’m always messing things up and taking things to seriously!
Hey I appreciate you making this video I saw Norbert for the first time a couple of months ago and I was shocked how similar it was to the life I lived with my ex-wife. I'm going through therapy now which is not something popular in the black community and I'm realizing that I do have ADHD as well as some other disabilities that make me more trusting and more likely to be abused by narcissist. Mental health and learning disabilities need to be addressed in our community from the inside out.
One thing I know from watching years and years of comedy (particularly dark comedy) I believe the point is to shed light and bring awareness to various, typically heavy topics using humor. People will be more likely to absorb the message and themes (whether consciously or subconsciously) better in a lighthearted manner. An analogy I can use is if I’m trying to get someone to understand me better through conversation, will the listener be more open to listen if I’m screaming at them? Or if I’m calmly expressing my point? Typically the latter. Some times heavy topics can trigger people if it’s given to the audience in a heavier tone. Making them less likely to want to be exposed to it. Do you know how many people I know who saw the movie “Precious” once and refused to watch it ever again or couldn’t even finish it because of how heavy it was? I think you’ll reach a wider audience using something everyone likes to do. Be happy and laugh. It’s universal.
I was a child or a pre-teen (it's been a long time) when i watched Norbit, i thought it was funny because i knew that the characters were all Eddie Murphy. I was so impressed by how he played the chinese man, norbit and rasputia. But now that i am older and had experienced a long relationship with my ex, who emotionally abused me and made me feel like I am a horrible person because I wouldn't do what he wanted. And when I tried to leave, he tried to tell me he will kill himself, it sucked. I cannot make light out of it because it's awful dealing with people like Rasputia. People who emotionally and mentally gaslight you.
I love your view of this movie I recently went down a path of watching comedy movies that have traumatic moments on main and side characters such a That’s my boy if you ever cover that it would be amazing while it is funny take away the jokes and silly music it’s sad and scary to think about.

When I was in a psychiatric ward last year, I started thinking about this movie, and how devastating it was. I would never want to be anything compared to Rasputia spiritually
This was a great analysis! I feel this same way about the movie Cable Guy. It’s only labeled a comedy because Jim Carey is a comedic actor. Carey’s, at times, zany performance, the musical score, and some one-liners add some levity. But even that zany performance can be viewed as sinister.
as a kid i had this movie on repeat and probably watched it twice a day at LEAST. never even understood most of it until re-watching but it's always been one of my favourites
I genuinely love this video. Great analysis of the medium-amusing fat jokes dv survivor with a side order of deeply uncomfortable and incredibly out of place yellowface movie, earnestly a 10/10. Horror and comedy sure are just about the same thing but with different sound effects.

This movie made me so uncomfortable when I remember first seeing it, and it was more than just the fat jokes. Watching a person being abused for an hour and a half was rough. I love that this video was suggested to me!
Honestly same this is exactly how I feel about this movie you said it the best ❤
My friends really had the nerve to look at me crazy when I told them I didn’t really like this movie growing up
Norbit changed my life, I hated the movie until oneday I broke down and realized I was Norbit.
Yup! Courage the cowardly dog came to mind for me when I saw first this movie
It was basically a movie about the defeat of a Narcissist.
Nah, the hitting the dog with car scene made me cry as a child.
I don’t know who you are, or how this video got in my algorithm. But you have earned a subscriber 😊
Same
Same here lol
Came here to say this. Amazing coherent and cohesive. Spectacular. Gimme 14 more
Right , this video is so good. HER SO ADORABLE TOO 😢 😂😂 🔥 well made vid fr
Yeah I’m stuck now
This movie confirms that being desperate for companionship will get you in the most f*****-up situationships
I always felt that this movie was ahead of its time, It showed how men can get abused but people either ignore it or play it for laughs. It reminded me of Why did I get married? where people hated Mike for abusing Sheila but Angela was abusive to Marcus but that was played for laughs…😒. I remember seeing a video of someone that was abused by his wife and when he finally divorced and called the cops on her people in family had the nerve to say stuff like “well what did you do to her” and “she was probably going through something” like… 🤦🏽♀️
Exactly wtf!!!😤
it’s so crazy bc that’s what they say ab both genders being abused. like why is it always “well what did you do to him/her”
wasn't sheila reacting to marcus' abuse?
It aint ahead of shit !! Weak men get abused
Marcus was also living off of her, spending her money and in the same breath giving her stds oh and let’s not forget the cheating.. how was he abused? Granted she should have left his dusty ahh where she found him, but how was abused again?
Literally I’ve always said this…it’s actually a sad story of a man that was abused since he was a kid and trapped in a abusive relationship
Nah, DEADASS! As an adult, I borderline cry for Norbit every time I watch it now.
Norbit married a copy of his mother. It's not just an internal psychological horror but a story of Norbit's external living horror.
What, we don’t even meet his mother ?
@@Sombercat Wasn't she the one who threw him out onto the side of the road?
We have no idea how that woman looked like or behaved like...? You can't repeat behavior that you've never witnessed. Psychological trauma doesn't work like that.
@@TheeQuirkyPandathat’s not really true, it’s not always about what you witness but how you feel.
@@TheeQuirkyPandadna is a real thing. I’ve seen people act just like their parents they never met. Very creepy.
Firstly.. you have a beautiful reading voice!
What I wonder is why the little girl that plays young Kate is Black but grown up Kate is a biracial woman.
I wondered this too, this has been a thing in black film for the longest…
It is absolutely a colorist movie. All kinds of awful, stereotypical tropes. Someone gave me a bunch of dvds and this one went in the trash, right where it belongs!
Be careful of that, it can very easily turn into colourism against light skinned black people too
As a plus sized black woman, i HATED this movie. So many plus sized dsbw got compared to either Rasputia or Precious when getting bullied (whether you actually looked them or not). Hell I still hate both of those movies for existing in my adulthood.
I was just talking about this!
No different than tall people being called Lurch or bald people being called Mr. Clean all the time...just find good jokes to throw back
Precious was really a piece of 💩.
Precious was a ONE TIME watch. I cant stomach that movie more
Thank you for starting a conversation I've been internally begging to be brought to light.
Your story is super close to mine and Im still in it. It's good to know there's some hope on the other side
I’m glad you made it out 💓 I was also silenced as a child SA victim. It wasn’t our fault. We were failed. I hope I can eventually go no contact like you.
I can relate. I went no contact with my mother and haven’t talked to her for almost 11 years.❤
Wow this is an insane story I’m sorry u had to deal w all that I pray u are ok now ❤
You are extremely intelligent, well-spoken, and talented. It’s crazy how you articulated your ideas into this video and not once was I lost on what you meant.
You are 100% correct, as soon as you change the music Rasputia becomes Mary from Precious. Great video.
Random note but the shirt respucia wears as a child in the playground is something I've wanted since this movie came out
It does look cozy af
this video made me understand why i felt so uncomfortable watching this movie. thank you for your insight and your commentary on how the movie ties to black people's struggles with handling trauma and suffering in general, it was really informative to people like me who are outside of the community.
Dude, I went through this myself and it went right over my head. No one takes your trauma seriously when you’re back and will laugh along, even other black people and that just goes to show
the movie is also colorist i dont know if anyone else noticed but it follows the trop of a darkskin male main character needing to get away from his darkskin often mean/sassy partner so that he can get to a lightskin more feminine and nicer woman
ive noticed this trope in other movies but norbit was when i realized that "oh this is a thing"
Tyler Perry does this in his movies
This reflects Eddie Murphy’s real life obsession with thin light skinned black women look at all his children’s mothers.
It’s not his fault he portrays reality of life ❤
That's just Eddie Murphy movies in general lol
I mean do you say anything when they make a black women gets with a powerful white man I feel like they do these things to divide the black man and women
This movie made me UNCOMFORTABLE when I was a kid, I feel like you hit the nail on the head with this one! Earned a subscriber too!
I remember finding this movie unsettling and kind of scary as a young teen, I'm glad someone else agreed because anyone whos lived under similar situations probably laughed as little as I did. Absolutely his worst movie. Anyone would be terrified to have a Rasputia in their life.
It's the black misery
To be honest, I never thought of Norbit this way, but now I understand and agree with your point of view.
I think the sentiment in this video explains why I never liked the show Everybody Hates Chris; I just thought it was me being too sensitive to find the humor in it because the mom's actions hit too close to home (ie getting yelled at/punished for things I didn't do or simple mistakes)
Yeah i can't watch that show either.
Because we care 😢 and we get it from our daddies. 😢. That’s why it’s about you and Christ. Parents and children all transform into Christ.
weirdo.
@kellytaylor9170 what an odd comment to make when this comment had nothing to do with your religion or beliefs. not needed when talking about abuse.
I always felt sorry for Norbit! Like it was funny, I think but also I was waiting for him to be able to stand up to her.
I love people who think too deeply about things. This is how I look at things too
Always felt bad for Norbit. I never watched this purposely after seeing it in theaters.
Side note, I'm old 😂
Yea, watching this in adulthood had me so uncomfortable I couldn't even finish it
It made me very uncomfortable as well but I only kept watching due to Eddie Murphys acting capabilities.
I view norbit as a tale of a man rising up from his abusers and finally getting a happy ending. I believe this is to remind people that no matter how it gets, you can still find light at the end of the tunnel.
This niche hyper fixation yapaholic nature of this is content I've been longing for. Love the work and analysis!!
The scene was still funny when you changed the music but mainly cuz of Rasputias ridiculous voice and way of speaking 😂
My mom told me if you don’t leave the first time you slow. Now i really believe her.
Someone with niche interests and interesting takes on them? The algorithm has blessed me today. Subbing rn
The seriousness of your tone with this movie.. omg honestly it made it funnier, the contrast I mean lol I’ve thought these thoughts for years
I agree. What that woman does to that man is awful. I think it would have been better if rasputia had been a smaller woman and there were less fat jokes tbh but the point is…. Poor norbit
Abuse is abuse fat or skinny
This movie came out when I was in like elementary school i think…the way I was bullied and called Rasputia bc I was also fat n black…
like oh !!
but yeah this movie is high key very sad a majority of it I always felt so bad for norbit ;;
I hate that Precious movie. One of my coworkers called me that because I was in a bad mood from working with him.
Most fat people are abusive darkskin or not 😂
I love your analysis very insightful and very true. I'm curious if he *actually* intended for the undertones to be probing and thought provoking, or if he just is perpetuating the same cycle intentionally. And evenso, despite his efforts, it continues to perpetuate the cycle due to the collective consciousness. That being said, again, love your take.
SAME!!! I need to know if he was just making a movie or tryna make us think
Thank you
I love Norbit and it's not even Eddie Murphy's funniest film.
I will never watch this movie the same way again. Thank you for pushing the real narrative to the forefront.
The movie would still be made as it has a message plus it’s funny
What a hell of an analysis! This deserves a sub
4:38 when u prove yo mom wrong
Hey I appreciate you making this video I saw Norbert for the first time a couple of months ago and I was shocked how similar it was to the life I lived with my ex-wife. I'm going through therapy now which is not something popular in the black community and I'm realizing that I do have ADHD as well as some other disabilities that make me more trusting and more likely to be abused by narcissist. Mental health and learning disabilities need to be addressed in our community from the inside out.
Poor Norbit was going THROUGH it!! And his sensitive, soft-spoken personality made it all even tougher to watch. T_T
Norbit is one of those movies we've all seen so many times lmao it's so easy to just put it on and let it play.
A "20th watch through of Norbit" is a sentence that I've never before seen in my lifetime
I love Adamn Sandler movies but that was disgusting, that boy was in middle school.
This is the same with everybody hates Chris.
Just wow. I have no idea how you got into my algorithm, but I watched the whole piece and you definitely have a new subscriber. I have been saying something to this effect for years about this movie and it’s nice to have some validation. I look forward to seeing what you come up up next.
When I was in a psychiatric ward last year, I started thinking about this movie, and how devastating it was. I would never want to be anything compared to Rasputia spiritually
I hope you do more of these. I love your commentary!
i’ve always noticed the unfairness and weirdness when i was younger. now i really understand.
This was a great analysis! I feel this same way about the movie Cable Guy. It’s only labeled a comedy because Jim Carey is a comedic actor.
Carey’s, at times, zany performance, the musical score, and some one-liners add some levity. But even that zany performance can be viewed as sinister.
I agree. Norbit is a cultural touchstone!
i loooove this analysis, i was always creeped out by this movie as a kid. Now it kinda makes sense.
This was a nice deep dive, I think I subconsciously felt this but didn’t put it into words. Beautiful video!
as a kid i had this movie on repeat and probably watched it twice a day at LEAST. never even understood most of it until re-watching but it's always been one of my favourites
Well done video! I’ve only watched this movie once cause it was so disturbing on a level that you’ve articulated so gracefully. Thank you for this!
I genuinely love this video. Great analysis of the medium-amusing fat jokes dv survivor with a side order of deeply uncomfortable and incredibly out of place yellowface movie, earnestly a 10/10. Horror and comedy sure are just about the same thing but with different sound effects.
I remember my Father taking me to the theater to watch this movie. One year later, I got Norbit on DVD.
You are absolutely correct and I loved hearing your point of view on this. Thank you. I enjoyed this video.
Such an incredible breakdown in only 12 minutes of a movie I laughed at so much as a child that I now view differently. This is my first video on this channel and I’m off to watch more 🫡
This video is great! I always felt for Norbit, he was mentally and physically tormented by Rasputia for decades in a toxic relationship. The comedy tried to mask that but it was hard to watch at times. I just felt so bad for him. :(
Now watching this when I was younger this never dawned on me. Norbit is still my all time favorite but thank you for opening a new view on it
The funny thing is I was just on tubi last night and half considered watching norbit. So this would show up for me. Now I wanna watch it again after like 15 yrs and then watch your take 😂. It’s kinda my fav way to watch some stuff get a lil summary or personal pov and watch it through that lens.
Now i gotta watch Norbit again through this lens
0:31 😂 not a certified yapper channel lmao I hath found my people 🙂↕️🥳 also I have always thought that nor it was meant to be satire so I’m really interested to listen to your view on it because right out of the gate I can already think of moments that would definitely classify as horror 🎉

Who are you? I accidentally clicked, you got in my algorithm, at first I’m like I don’t know bout this, and…..I’m glad I gave you a chance. Take my subscription.
This analysis was amazingly well done. Please continue these and do all the black classics!
I hope you get the credit you deserve for how well put together and thought out this was. I loved itttttt.
Damn this was good!!! Never seen Norbit in spite of being a HUGE Eddie Murphy fan and I never will. I love how you weaved in the importance of the black experience into your explanation. This was impeccably done!!!
This is a great overview of this film. I enjoyed watching it. Very well done!
This was such a good breakdown 👏
My brain blocked this out for a reason that I couldn’t articulate. This PERFECTLY describes my feelings.
I’m not use to watching content creators who sound so young, but this video reminds me there are still quality content in all forms. I like how u structured this video, moving forward I would say work a little on the mixing of movie audio and ur own commentary. From what I watched it’s nothing bad, just the one part when Norbit and Repusha in the car, something to be mindful of in the future. Otherwise this is a great video👍🏾
I remember this movie vaugely from my childhood. It genuinely disturbs me how normal and common it was to just invalidate and laugh at horrible abuse. What thats done to so many people and how they trets others scares the hell outta me.
This video just made me sub to your channel. Keep up the Good Fight fam!!❤️💯🔥
