  • Interview with Commander Stephen Williams, Commanding Officer, Unmanned Patrol Squadron 19, on the US Navy's MQ-4C Triton unmanned surveillance aircraft.
    =====================
    Commander Williams introduces his squadron, VUP-19, and discusses the missions of the MQ-4C Triton, the current status of the program and what is next for VUP-19.
    According to NAVAIR, the MQ-4C Triton is an autonomously operated system that provides a persistent maritime ISR capability using multiple maritime sensors. The MQ-4C Triton air vehicle is based upon the United States Air Force (USAF) RQ-4B Global Hawk, while its sensors are based upon components of (or entire systems) already fielded in the DoD inventory. Along with the P-8A manned aircraft, the MQ-4C Triton is integral to the Navy’s Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force (MPRF) Family of Systems (FoS). The MPRF is the operational agent for the MQ-4C Triton and Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Group (CPRG) is the fleet sponsor for the manned/unmanned integration concept.

    The enemy thought they would be safe moving their wedding parties to sea, but the Navy is now ready for them.

    I wonder what the cost savings will look like that come from replacing the EP3 fleet with UAVs. I'd expect it to be pretty dramatic.

      It likely won’t change much. The money that the P-3 saved on maintenance will be spent on maintenance for the MQ-4C. This drone has so many systems and sensors to maintain. Although the capability is worlds apart.

    Couldn’t they have brought back VQ-2, or transitioned the EPs to a new platform?

    Meh…. 😕😒
    I used to work on these things and in a nutshell it’s a pop riveted piece of expensive junk! Sure, it can do this, that and the other but airframe-wise this thing is mostly assembled with (including the fuel tank) what are known as Cherry Max rivets, basically nothing but a glorified pop rivet. Last I heard the U.S. Navy wasn’t very happy with it either because some of the electronics packages on it weren’t working as advertised and the Navy suspended production of any more of them. Northrop Grumman can beat their chest all they want and ballyhoo how great the Triton is but like my dad used to say even a turd looks good if you put enough paint on it!

      @@slyzoro4795 You know my friend, I wish I could agree with you and say “you’re right, I didn’t do a damn thing“ but me and my fellow coworkers went well above and beyond our calls of duty to make Northrop Grumman shine. And what did we get in return? Nothing. The managers took all the glory, while we ended up with the root in the rump routine.
      Do you work for Northrop Grumman? If so, all I can say is what they used to say to people who moved up in the company: SUCKER! Working for Northrop Grumman was about like being a prostitute where people paid you to screw you and screw us, they did! Where I work now not only have multiple doors open for me, allowing me to advance, but they have treated me a lot better than Northrop Grumman ever did. Aside from that when it comes to major players in the aerospace industry Northrop Grumman is barely holding on. Lockheed, Boeing and Airbus can swim circles around that little California tinhorn company any day of the week.

      @@slyzoro4795 Exactly what does that have to do with the comment I wrote? Please explain your reply. Everything I wrote about that aircraft was true as it’s mostly put together by glorified pop rivets. Of course, Northrop Grumman is not going to own up to how much of a piece of junk it is.
      Judging from the caliber of your comment, it sounds to me like you’re speaking from experience. You probably get cussed out by your boss every day for doing shoddy work!
