    Hi Luke. Thanks for the review of the drumit 5 mkII. I own a drumit 3 module since four months back and the reason I bought it is because I have been using Steven Slates drums 5.5 at live gigs and triggered this from my Yamaha dtxtress4 module.
    It felt a bit unsafe to use a macbook to generate the sounds instead of a drum module.
    So when I found a used drumit3 module for half the cost of a new one I purchased it directly. One of the reasons was the compatibility with different pads. I use Yamaha cymbals, hihat, and DIY pads for toms and snare, and it works well but when you spoke about the misstriggering of the bell zone I recalled that I sometimes have experienced that to.
    I found the 4G SDCARD on the drumit3 limited since I wanted to squeeze in as many drumkits from Steve Slates VST as possible. Solved this by buying an upgrade kit from Zourman with a preloaded 64GB SDcard. With this I now have a drumit5 mkII except for 2 outputs and separate buttons for each trigger. The SD card from Zourman contained all drumsets from the Drumit 5 mkII so it was very convenient.
    When I opened up the Drumit3 casing I discovered that its the exact same electronic board that is used for both drumit 3 and drumit 5 mkII because it was marked also with drumit 5. The only difference is that they don't mount the extra output on the board and the extra buttons and that the metalic casing does not have a hole for the SD card, and the buttons.
    I also know the reason why they removed the USB port. I have a USB port on my drumit3 but I cannot use it with my 64GB SD card mounted because then the SD card is erased. Why? It is because the hardware and software on the drumit 3/5 mkII (which is the same) does not support to communicate with SD cards larger that 4GB. This is as you said really a shame but to me it proves what I have been suspecting all along. The development resources spent to raise the drumit5 to the drumit3/5mkII is very limited, and I don't have high expectations on that any firmware updates are going to be released either.
    I have tried to reach out to the 2BOX support mail with questions about, some of the buggs that you mention in your review but there is no respons at all. Not even a mail confirmation that my support question has been registered.
    I can also tell you that the original Swedish owners has sold the company to a German distributor, so the engineering brains behind the original drumit5 module is no longer in the company. So I am suspecting that the design is now a milking cow for the new owners of 2BOX to get the most out of it before it gets to out of date.
    With all this said I love my expanded drumit3 module. I could never justify to buy a Mimic pro module, but but with my drumit and my Steven Slate VST I can have almost the same sound experience without using a computer on stage.
    It's of course more statical than a Mimic Pro module but much, much cheaper, even though theres some hours to spend when moving the sounds from SD5.5 VSTs into the drumit module.

      Hi Mikael. Thanks for weighing in with your experience! Interesting to hear that you've also experienced the Yamaha mistriggers. It definitely sounds like you've been through your options carefully and found what works for you, despite a couple of frustrations along the way. It's a shame that you've not had any response from support.
      I've heard about the change in development staff before. I can only really go on what communication I've had with the people involved on that front. I have also read about the USB issues once upgrading the card too - my first draft of the review had an extra few comments about this, but I ended up chopping it out for time and to remove speculation since I hadn't attempted to confirm it myself. But as you say, it looks to be the case. It's a shame that they couldn't upgrade to a newer USB port and work out how to support it considering the time that has passed. But there's definitely a market for what it can do well and it seems like we're both part of that!

    I know what you mean about the lack of effects processing on board. I honestly don't even see the point of a delay or a flanger. Nothin a digital mixer wouldnt solve though, I know it's added expense and of course this could be a deal breaker. When I had a 2box set up, for live use I ran it though a Behringer X18. 1. Kick 2. snare 3+4 toms, 5+6 cymbals. I stuck with mainly dry sounds and added verb on top. A different verb for snare than toms and an overall ambience for the kit. Plus I had better eq and compression on the individual channels. Seriously, it was a killer set up, sounded really awesome. The RCF M18 mixer is only £350 (at last check) and that would give you all this, it's got a small foot print too!

    I really hope that Drumit 5 can hop you onboard, because you are not only a great experienced drummer but also a tech savvy, if they listen at least 10% of your feedback they will end up with an amazing and well polished product once and for all

    The first kit I started when I got into edrums was the Alesis Nitro Mesh - I've come a long way as I have a VAD 506 now but anyway .... one of the things I like about that entry level nitro module was that I could push buttons on the module and hear the exact pad I wanted to. Made it very easy and quick to edit sounds. To my knowledge, this is the only other module that has that, and its a really helpful features.

    You are able to adjust a sample with the DSound Manager software, if you double left click on the DSDN file. I have added reverb, I've listen and removed indvidual unwanted samples from DSDN files, I've turned a medium ride into a power bell ride (increasing volume & tuning of the bell) and increased the max turning on high hats to get a trap high hat sound all with DSound Manager.
    Great news that you will be selling multilayered DSDN samples.
    I'am looking forward to more videos about the 2Box module.

    Just a note about the lack of USB thing. When I had the original Di5, I added the 32g mod from Jman and it was a breath of fresh air. Not only did I have way more storage space for sounds (constantly having to juggle the 4gig space was a pain) but also I no longer had to have the module connected in USB mode to make sound dumps, it was also a hell of a lot quicker then the USB1 transfer speed.

      I'm working on my first multilayered snare at the moment, I'm hoping for release within the next few weeks. It'll include some presets with it but, because of the nature of the 2Box system, they will only work correctly if you still have some of the stock sounds on your SD card.
      I had to build the presets out of some stock sounds for the other instruments since I don't have a set of "full kit" samples included. You can of course use this snare with any kit you build yourself and there are multiple variations of mic configurations, one with reverb added and 6 full articulations included.

    It would great to see episode about a diy snare for the 2Box module. Testing if different switches and bar triggers work with rim and cross stick. Try my multi trigger snare setup, using maybe the 2Box trigit triggers.
    I have the 2Box drumit 5 mk1 module with a 64 GB card extension connversion loaded with 2Box & VST samples. When I first started playing the 2Box module I found the kick & snare lacking some cut & doesn't have positional sensing but I made my 13" snare play like it has positional sensing.
    On the snare I'am using 2 different edge triggers mounted @ 11 o'clock & 1 o'clock into the 2Box and a 3rd smaller 27mm centre mounted cone trigger (Quartz percussion lowest sensitivity) plugged into my TD11 that adds dry Roland sounds. I'am right handed so the 35mm Quartz percussion cone trigger @ 11 o'clock is the most sensitive. There is an square Extreme trigger @ 1 o'clock it is medium sensitive with a higher threshold setting sometimes has the same snare DSDN samples tuned +0.1 more and a decay of 1.5 -2.5 and 40% - 60% volume and that is plugged into Tom 1. Hitting the mesh snare head at different sides and at different dynamics triggers 3 different layers of sound. I have 4 toms on a splitter cables from the Tom 2 & Tom 3 inputs.
    With a guitar ABY pedal I plug the kick into both the TD11 & 2Box modules. Only the snare & kick are connected to the TD11. Different TD11 kits will change the tuning, tone, snare buzz, ring and kick fattness of the combined drum sound. The 2Box open sound does benefit from the fat, tight, attack of the Roland kick & snare sound. The headphone output from a module is plugged into the aux input of the other module and I can still use the Rolands metronome and coach function. I hope this helps get diy positonal sensing and great layered sounds.

    Learned a lot from this. Thanks. Searching for a tight snare sound. What are you using 17:42 with the pd128? And does downtuning a sound only stretch it, making it less dense with loss of snare rattle. Sounds recorded low tuned and tuned up inside the 2box, will that make that sound more dense. And will its recorded reflections start to sound weird. In search of the holy grale.

      A lot of it (not all) is expectation bias. 65drums has a blind comparison between about a dozen different drum modules and you may be surprised at the end which sounds best to your ears when you don't know what module/s your listening too. To my ears the Pearl Mimic sounded like one of the worst, but to most people it's just about the most realistic sounding module the market.

    Hey, what do you prefer, the TD-27 or the 2BOX Drumit 5?
    I've been considering the TD-27 because of the positional sensing and the digital snare compatibility, because I really like to have realistic rim shots. Also supposedly Roland has better triggering and a more realistic feel?
    I'm just worried about the machine gunning on the TD-27 because I play a lot of fast beats at a constant velocity. Thanks a lot for all of these videos btw.

      Hey! Sorry for the slow reply. It's difficult to say because both modules are very good at different things. The Roland is much easier to get to grips with generally and the triggering is probably the best you'll get out of most modules (as you highlighted, the digital pads are great and the cross-stick detection and deep/shallow rimshots make things very playable). But the 2Box beats it for "pure acoustic" style sounds, if that's what you're after and the flexibility of creating your own instruments is awesome if you have the time or patience (and sample collection) for it. So it really does come down to exactly what you want to use it for and how happy you are to experiment with different things.

    I did watch the whole thing :-D Great video as usual, Luke. I think I'll stick to the Strike for now, although I've been trying to get my TD-27 to sound half decent, it´s nowhere near to the EZ Drummer sets I´m able to load on the Strike...the TD-27 works a lot better though...Strike´s a bitch in terms of trigger response

      I'm using either the Roland FD-7 (when the hi-hat pad is stationary) or a Goedrum controller (when it's on the hi-hat stand). For use with a stand, I just put a clutch through the mounting hole. It's bigger than the hole on most cymbal pads so it's easily done, and it's got rubber washers which help prevent spinning.

    hello my friend, first of all I want to thank you because your channel has helped me make good decisions. I want to ask you something about drumit Five mkII, can't I get the x-stick sound by connect a bt1 bar into one of the inputs? On the other hand, if I decided to change the sample rim shot side to the snare rim zone, would I be able to find X-stick samples inside the module??? thousand and thousand thanks. I also have mimic, I'm still waiting for your new ready-to-use kits to buy, I want new cymbals and raw snares samples to play with positional sensing ready to play without use editor.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому +2

      Hello! Thank you for the kind words!
      Yes, you can assign sounds like cross-stick to additional triggers like a BT-1 or you can swap the rim to a cross-stick only instead of a rimshot. The cross-stick samples will usually be part of the .dsnd files for different snare instruments and not all of them will have these samples. I think there is a separate folder named something like "3 Zone Snares" or similar that all have head, cross-stick and rim samples.
      To use them, you have to change the SOUND setting in the KIT > ENV page. If there are 3 zone samples, the SOUND parameter will have a +++ sign. You can press the button above to swap to different sounds. The middle + is the cross-stick, so if you change the setting to show ++- it should disable the rimshot and make the rim use the cross-stick sound.
      I am planning to have a tutorial that shows this sometime soon.

      No, I won't be at NAMM. I wouldn't be able to afford to get over there for a start, but I'm also going on holiday around then so I might even struggle to cover it on the channel. Will have to see what crops up!

    when are the e-drum manufacturers going to figure out how to integrate a decent size touch screen into a decently priced drum module....
    i had to go to the mimic for $2000 to get good sounds and good user functionality.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  2 роки тому +1

      It is surprising that the screens seem to be such a huge hangup in this market. I get that the economics when compared to the phone market means that things might not work out quite as cheap, but being limited to so few modules with the option is pretty crazy.
      On the flip side, as much as I enjoy using the Mimic, I personally don't think touch-screen only is the best approach for a module. I'd still rather have mostly buttons or dials for a lot of functionality. A combination of both is probably the sweetspot for me. Bigger, nicer screens are well past due for most manufacturers, though!

      This module do not need any colorscreen. With Software from Lustark you can layer all the great sounding kits from addictive drums, toontrack, Steven slate, perfect drums usw. in a few hours. The drummanager does assign the right sound to your pad setup automatically. With 64 GB perfect sounding kits, this is the best sounding module on the Market. But this is not for beginners... You have to weigh up the risks when it comes to live performance. Personally, I'd avoid using a laptop and VST live, but some people are totally fine with using them.
      In terms of flexibility with sound, you'd technically get more of that with a VST. But a lot of the time you only really need dry sounds going to the desk so it's not 100% necessary and the module would work great for that without adding an extra piece of hardware. "Performance" in a triggering sense is probably best on a Roland module, but getting exactly what you want out of a VST might take a bit of dialling depending on the software. There are a lot of variables.

    • @steevidrums

      @@vazer71 Performance with a VST will largely depend on the spec of your laptop and it's strongly advised to use a connected interface for the audio out of the laptop. If you have a decent laptop already, then you're half way there. If not, it can get very pricey!

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      Yeah, pretty much true. The 2Box module uses (and can load) multilayered samples of acoustic drums, so it will sound more "acoustic" than Roland's approach.
      Roland's sounds typically involve having a limited set (in terms of sample layers) of heavily edited/processed instruments that sound unnatural to many people and they tend to fare best in a setting where processed or electronic sounds are desired. The playability of their sounds, especially when coupled with the digital pads or the positional sensing capabilities, can feel better for some people than what you can achieve with a 2Box module though and, for some people, this can make it feel more like an acoustic instrument. This is more of a "behaviour" thing than a purely sound-based thing and whether or not this is valuable to you really depends on personal preference.

    • @TheeDrumWorkshop
      @TheeDrumWorkshop  Рік тому

      Yeah, the Mimic Pro is pretty much the ultimate module now for "acoustic" sounds since you can also load sounds with the editor (except for hi-hats).
      The Mimic has a more robust trigger engine in my opinion with support for more pad types and articulations, it received a huge library update to its onboard sounds recently and it also has things like adjustable microphone controls on its stock sounds, per-microphone and master EQ and compression options, more inputs/outputs and some other useful features. So it has a lot going for it, but not everyone wants or needs these features! As you say, it's very expensive (over double the price of a DrumIt 5 MKII last I checked), so you need to work out if it offers enough over the DrumIt to be worthwhile for your usage!

      Pretty much as Ozterkvlt says - adding in extra hardware can be irritating/costly and sometimes introduces an extra weakness into the equation, depending on how you want to use it. Personally I try to keep hardware to a minimum and prefer to use a dedicated device if I'm playing live with my eDrums, for example. Some people are happy to take a laptop on stage for that sort of thing and fair play to them, but I'm not big on it. There's a creative element to producing instruments for something like this too which I enjoy - I'm not personally that bothered about using VST sounds on them, I'll be using my own or creating combinations of samples.

It does however look like legal influence buying or like a bribe. Unfortunately I have to put the "paid promotion" disclaimer if I receive anything at all of value from a company to make a video. So 2Box sending me the module = receiving "payment" even if I haven't actually been paid cash (which I haven't). It's a legal thing in certain countries (including the UK, as far as I'm aware) so I put it on to cover myself more than anything else. Personally, even if I was returning the item after a review, I wouldn't accept the review unit if there was a stipulation about what I could or couldn't say in the video.
      Obviously my agreement with 2Box is a little different to usual, but I accepted the module in return for the tutorials, not for the review, and I made sure to make that distinction before agreeing!
