- People are alway surprised when we tell them that right after Valentine's Day is the best time to trim your ferns. But it's true! J-Dog explains why and demonstrates how we trim our ferns at the Garden Corner.
My jaw dropped watching him cut the entire fern off haha
Hahaha
That's what I'm about to do I just am here to make sure that it's okay. 😁
Didn't see that coming. Came for a trim. Received full head shave.
I wanted to thank you for this video. I had added a reoccurring event on my calendar with a link to this video. On Valentine’s Day this year I trimmed back my fern to baldness 😂 Today April 21st, 2020 my fern is drop dead gorgeous and luscious. Thanks again!!!
I’m happy to see you’re back making videos. I trimmed my ferns again this year. It’s was so sad looking and I missed my fern so much. But shortly I had so much new growth and by the summer I had a HUGE beautiful fern again. I think of you every time I look at my fern. Thank You
@@cobbieg really cool to hear about the follow-ups.
I literally just woke up and thought "Today I must trim my huge fern". So that's why I'm here.
Same
Dude went ham on that fern.
DazzleThemForMe 😂
Definitely I woke up like this today and i went to bed thinking about my ferns 😆 i need to bring my ferns inside to avoid winter damage and I just couldn’t wait and I felt “fern accomplished”
This man took the time to make a video to help people with their plants. You mean people really suck.
Gina Duarte yes 😣
THIS DOES WORK! Just make sure u already have new coming in . Also the Kimberley Queen is the type I did this to.
I was wondering about the Kimberly queen fern I have three that are looking pretty rough
i just did it today to mine...i probably should have asked you how it worked out first...althought i still am..asking...😏👂🙏
Love your positive energy 💛 I’m going to do this with my fern!
never bothered all the negatives thought about you bro... keep it up with the good job... simply the best.
I love the enthusiasm and energy that you put into your videos! This was informative AND inspiring!
My face when he slaughtered the fern 😵
This is amazing. I came here for fern help and left with inspiration. Thank you and please keep up the content, the world needs more people like you!
I must say i’m afraid to cut my ferns all back - but I’m no longer afraid after watching your video🙏
Thank you. The best tutorial on cutting back ferns.
Thank you!
Ferns are a great asset to our g a rdens. And indoors. All varities are so different.
This video made me smile. Good quote
I did this - I really hope i don't regret it!!
Its been a year did you regret it. I'm curious i have a 2 year old Boston fern
@@ashleyvardy5791 no regrets! I ended up letting the plant go after the season - but it was a fun experiment
Whew!!! I cringed when he did that!!!! I thought that was what we strive for !OMG I almost cried- -it was so perfect. Glad your's is looking great again. The only thing tho...you have to wait so long while it looks so horrible for it to come back again! Happy gardening~
Remembering this video on Valentine's Day! Trimming my ferns today 💚🌿
Hi!!!! Thank you for your video. I always go back to your videos for help and always find it. Love the positive vibe you send this is what gardening is all about you inspire us!!! 💚💚💚💚💚💚
My fern of 9 years thanks you. I am hoping that she will look more beautiful than she has in years past thanks to your advice.
Can I ask, how did it go for you? Did you mist daily after or just stick to the same watering pattern?
If moving ferns indoors to keep out of cold weather is it okay to go ahead and trim them back now with the intent to keep them indoors until the weather warms up?
Superb video.
Keep it up.
I like the way you explained why you need to do it.
Watched this a couple of years ago and tried it. It definitely works. I watched again as I couldn't recall if applied to all ferns. I've just chopped them, so I'm hoping it works again.
wow...what karma. i wanted to watch a vid about how to/whether to cut back
my Autumn fern & this is the exact fern you demonstrated. thank you J
Thank you for this video, it’s very informative 🙂! I have an indoor Boston fern, does this require to be trimmed back every February too? Or is it only for outdoor ferns? X
Hey thanks for not showing everyone what it looked like after it grew back. Did it grow back and how many of you killed your ferns?
Say a prayer for my fern 😭 she was viciously attacked by frost and his evil minions!!
John, I trimmed my Australian Sword fern a couple weeks ago... No growth. I regret cutting it! When will it start looking like a fern again?
Did it ever grow back? 💔
I need to know also
what happened?
Thank-you! I really wanted to trim my very overgrown Boston Fern just like this, now that I have seen your video I have the confidence to go for it! It loves our humid weather in Austin - I keep it in the shade and don't have to water as much as one would expect - but I know it needs food - what kind of fertilizer do you recommend, I have fertilized it with basic plant food, maybe not enough? mine is a very pale green and I think it used to be deeper green ....
😲Haha ok, fair enough 🤣 thanks so much! 😘
my ferns died so I trimmed off all the dead leaves and saw that they had sprouted some of those little baby leaves again. This makes me think that cutting them down isn't too bad, but are you sure that the other person isn't right about only cutting off 30%?
Mines also. I am on youtube hunting any ideas how to save them. Now i saw this video i have hope. . Because there are many new sprouts.
have never cut my ferns back. makes sense. thanks
chatty but I really don't mind. :) so much enthusiasm!
I did as instructed and have a ton of small, spikey, brown stalks left. I see new fern heads popping up. Should I pull the brown stalks out bc it is crowded?
I did this with my Boston fern, granted it was turning brown when I did it, but it is not really coming back! 😕only have tiny little regrowth how long should I give it? it's been about 4 months since pruning
It seems to me Feb is the time I would enjoy this plant the most. Or does this make it last green in around December? Thanks
Hi J-Dog! Watched your vid cuz I need help with my bro's ferns. We are from Portland ourselves but living in hot CA on Lake Nacemiento rightt now but we still love ferns. ( We know...not the best climate/ferns). But you just answered my Q of what to do when his ferns look a little spindly. Thanks! But I cringed when you shopped that beautiful fern off!!!!! OMG I thought the biggest fern was the whole idea!!!! Thanks for a helpful video!
Just cut back mine! They were REAL unhappy about spending winter indoors with limited light. What are the watering instructions? Do I continue to keep the soil moist?
❤
Aaaaawww at 2:30 I felt relived because I did that to my 2 big ferns Now I now I did not killed them :D
I killed my damn plant last year cuz of this video thanks j dog 🙄
liagiba liagiba for real?
I had our gardener do this last winter and the ferns grew back beautiful this past summer.
If you do any cutting of a potted plant or any sort of cutting for propagation and repotting, you should let the cuts dry for 2 to 3 days so they callus, if you get the cut areas wet before theyve callused they can rot and die. Then you put in water for root growth, or into soil. Once you put it into soil, or repot something, you should keep the plant in shade for another 2 to 3 days. After that if it's a full sun plant, you can put it in direct light. Ferns arnt. They like partial light, shady areas, or a nice spot inside next to a window with indirect light.
I wish he'd just get to it already, I bailed at 1:40 when he didn't finish his sentence and jumped to another topic. May revisit when I have the patience to jump forward to find the action.
Wow. I was just thinking how snappy it was. Lol. Usually they go
into this long thing about where the fern comes from, how they started loving the plant, etc.
i never knew... thanks!
Huge thankyou .. if I divide my huge fern should I cut off all last year's growth?? Or this too much of a shock?
Thank you for the info. So I cut them back before bringing them in for the winter, or when is the best time to do that?
Do you ever answer the questions people ask? I've read some interesting questions, ones that I would ask also but I don't see your answers for them.
thanks for the tips ,it works
I pruned mine down and it never came back. 😢 Don’t know what happened? Does this also work for indoor Boston ferns?
Ah it's so painful though! :(
Can I do this in zone 9 during August? I just found a large boston fern on sale for 4 dollars and want to bring it back to life.
I am currently attempting to revive a Boston fern I saw on sale last week. I have divided them into smaller pots, trimmed back the foliage, and tested some pots with a mix of just soil, one with mixed egg shells and another with some tea leaves. I just came upon your video today, and you do not do much with them except for trim so did I just got too excited and ruined them or are they salvageable?
Do you do this with all kind of ferns? I have asplenium that I don't normally prune hard. Should I do that? What about maidenhair fern? I never prune my outdoor version. Not sure if I should...
That dog is cute.....
I am pretty certain this killed my fern when I followed this. 1 month post trimmin and nothing back.
Dude listening to you I killed my fern I think. I don't see any new growth it's been weeks
Wow...Butchered an entire fern!!! I have Macho ferns that are enormous I will NOT butcher them. Maybe this works for some ferns, but i assure you it will not for all. That will kill or cause a VERY slow regrowth process. You cut the dead off and leave the green foilage. Your fern, if in the proper zone, should be fine during winter, if your worried about leaving it outdoors, bring it inside and keep trimming the dead off and water as necessary.
Okay if I do it in june? Lol I live in Florida. I was given some very sad looking ferns and pruned them back.
can you do the same trim job in the fall?
What do I do with it once I cut it all the way back?? Can I keep it outside during the winter ❄️
There's my answer. Big chop it is
I need urgent help. I have sone fluffy ruffle fern stems. U know those stem with leaves. How do i grow roots on them? I have dipped them in water like any other cutting. Will it grow roots?
Where do you live? Valentine's Day is cold with snow. Maybe... mid April.
are you talking about a boston fern cutting it back and dividing it
My Boston ferns are planted in the back yard under a tree. They are beautiful, but need trimming. Do I cut them all down like you did in the pot?
No!!!
Boy, he's a chatter! ;-)
My partner watched this video and did this to my ferns just before Valentine's Day! We have tried to mist them every other day and give them a soak in the bathtub every couple weeks but nothing is really happening! :( Have we killed them or does it just take time??
I did the same thing and nothing as of yet. I'm hoping for the best but not very optimistic.
Just wondering if your ferns shoot up again? Mine never did, its been more than 2-3 months.
Thanks.
I waited until June and nothing. Bought a new fern.
I think this killed 2 of my ferns too. Maybe this guy don't know what he's talking about. wish I had read the comments.
Have you learnt your lesson? I don't think your ferns will come back - you killed them. Without any leaves how are they going to do photosynthesis which is where they get their food from?
Would this also apply to a boston fern??
When would you start trimming your fern? I just planted one. It's Jan. 15. Would I wait till next year? Thanks
He said that the fern can be cut back right around Valentine's Day, but I'm wondering if that can be delayed. At the end of a trip in mid-April I'll be flying home three ferns that I can't find in a nursery nearer to home, and I wonder if they'd be killed if I trimmed them back to fit them in a suitcase. Thanks.
Does that works in a boston fern too? My is not that good looking any more when i first got it.
How much water do these require ?
I cut my fern down even further. Will it survive or should I just say goodbye now?
MsDOMOARIGATO how’d it go?
Would this work on broader-leafed ferns like bird’s nest and crocodile ferns?
ccaatthheerriinnee no. Do not do this. It will kill your plant. Ecspecially with birdnest ferns
hi I have a boston fern that started to bring roots out of the pot like 6 months ago will the trimming stop it from doing this or should I repot it?
thanks
do you prune boston ferns valentines day to
Felt sad when he cut that fern with what felt like no regard for the plant... I'm sure he cares but geez...be gentle
How could you kill that beautiful lush green fern ! trimming is fine but spoiling its beauty like this for future growth is not good for a plant lover. If dried leaves are trimmed new fronds come up anyway.
is that true for all ferns?...macho ferns included?
thanks!
Marianne Rohde killed my boston fern
You already had it. Silly
My boston fern is three feet wide...I afraid to do this...
Don't do it !
DO NOT TRIM THE FERN FULLY LIKE HE DID. read comments below by others.
If you really want to trim a lot, leave 20-30% of leaves. Or wait till new growth are out then individually trim of last year’s leaves.
this killed my fern😔
sanjose528 mine to
You have to mist the fern everyday. If you just leave it and forget to water it then it won't come back. It takes a while so people think it's dead.
but it took 2 minutes just to get into it....
I'm pretty sure this is Ryan Reynolds disguised as a gardener trolling everyone into killing their fern.
I did this and it killed my fern
"trim"
Get to it. Stop yappin
😢😢
4 mins of video....30 seconds of info....chatty guy
Antoni santo
This video could have been 30 seconds, we only need the info about the plant, not your personal life
Michael Reyes woah, chill michael
EXACTLY!!!
Why is this video so loud?
ahahahahahahahaahahahahaha
Disliked, as this is misleading. Some ferns canNOT tolerate more than 30 percent of pruning and could kill it.
BOO HISSS on him taking any plant from the wild. Native plants are already struggling because of development. This man is clearly NO kind of naturalist. If you love plants, you should love nature and not demolish it like this fool. Please find another source for your plant information - there are lots of good ones on YT.
