The only thing I don't like (if that's even possible because of its extreme beauty), is the phrasing. It seems all wrong. So many times I want the singer to pause (or tie) for a crotchet, and then proceed. E.g. "Qui ge-mit in ex-ilio-", as opposed to "Qui gemit in Exi-ilio" It seems like what was meant for this sublime hymn was lost, like some children had accidentally found it and just 'went for it', and then all the World copied what they'd done without ever thinking.

In mass, instead of english, my grandma would start speaking the old way (Latin). For 34 years of her life, the catholic church, everything was in Latin, and so she taught me, and some of my many cousins some Latin songs.
I'm an atheist, and heard this tune for the first time at a Border's bookstore many years ago. I immediately turned to the counter and asked the staff what the song is, as I wanted to buy the CD (yes, those were the days). But there was already another lady with the same question, and before we could be help, a second lady stopped by with the same question!
We started a children sanctuary choir,and this is the song they are going to start singing en latin for this coming Christmas 2013, and at the end of the cantata they will sing it in spanish, Muchas gracias, all the kids are listening at this video to get used to the music.

As someone who sings in a Catholic choir, although this is an Advent song, it's perfectly appropriate to include it in one's Christmas collection in anticipation of the Birth of the Lord. Don't be technical if it makes you happy. The song means God With Us, and Christmas, He IS WITH US!!!
It is actually sung every (or nearly every) advent in traditional Christian churches, but sadly American Evangelicalism has, for the most part, done away with advent and traditional hymns in favor of CCM "worship songs."

I remember singing these songs in church as a child. Latin was the language of the Roman Catholic Church. Mass was in Latin, hymns were in Latin.
I am Roman Catholic also. However, I don't ever remember hearing this hymn sung at any masses. It would have been perfect for Christmas midnight mass.
