Hi I’m Matt Lockey, welcome to my Coach Lockey UA-cam Channel. This UA-cam channel is designed to help you play better golf, and to help you enjoy your golf more!
I specialise in golf course vlogs, golf challenges, golf tips, golf lessons, golf club reviews and the odd golf club unboxing. So pretty much everything golf!
I want to help you play better golf by providing coaching videos on all topics about golf. How to fix your slice, fix your hook, help you drive the golf ball longer, hit your irons more pure, hit your irons closer to the hole and help you draw and fade your golf shots.
As well as helping you produce the best long game you can have, I will help you lower your scores by chipping better, stopping duff and thin chips, pitching the ball closer and creating backspin like the tour pros. Finally, I will provide you help to putt better and hole more putts too!
If you enjoy the channel make sure you hit subscribe and also tap the notification bell so that you are always notified when I release a new video.
I go 7 wood, 25 degree hybrid and 28 hybrid. My longest iron is my 7 and I’m vey happy with this setup.
Brilliant yep agree 100% as I'm now doing the same...
Sooo let me put two and two together. We’ve got a title that says “the SECRET to hitting your long irons pure” but an explanation that says if your speed sucks you need hybrids. So the secret to hitting your long irons is using hybrids in lieu of? Hmmmm
when I try to hit my 4 hybrid I always hit a hook with it so in a few days I am getting a new G430 5 wood HL and have a G430 7wood HL on order .
As you get older, your swing speed decreases. Long irons become unnecessary. Personally, I stop at the 6-iron and then take hybrids
He's correct, the longer irons are just low % shots for most. When most LPGA players started dropping 3-4 iron, that was a clue. Although they are world class ball strikers, they had better results with hybrids and 7 woods. The reason... speed. I play 7 wood and hybrid at the top end. Still play 5 iron but that will change when my speed decreases as I get older. Excellent video.
An abundance of age and a lack of speed = lack of launch, height and spin = lack of control and distance. The lower the loft the worse it becomes. My least lofted iron is a 24.5* 5-iron because I hit a 4 iron just 4 yards farther, and a 3 iron actually goes 3 yards shorter. Sadly, it took me until recently to accept reality and ditch the long irons and put in a couple a hybrids. But now, my proximity to greens (yes greens, not pins) has improved dramatically and my "missed short" stat has dropped by nearly half.
I have a 3 wood and a full set of hybrids from 4 through 9 and I love them
I think you're spot on as a general rule but I'm much more consistent in directional terms with my 4 utility iron than with my 4 hybrid! Sure I'm not getting as much height and distance but I do know where it's going to go more often than not.
Same here. Maybe my next lesson is how to hit the new 430 4 Hybrid I have bought because right now my 4&3 utility irons are still in the bag. 6 HC
@@markkenyon8760 I have a TM SIM 3 hybrid and often pull it left on approaches! Don't have the speed for a 3 iron. My Sub70 4 utility is surprisingly easy to hit.
2 fairway wood. 15/18
3 hybrids. 21, 25, 29
Then irons starting with 7i at 28*. Distance gaps are roughly 10 yds.
Swing speed for driver about 85.
Hybrids and 7 and 9 woods are so much easier to hit, and they offer tons of forgiveness!
True. Since last year I prefer my 5H over my 5 iron. Stopped using a 4 iron 2 years ago. Stopped using my 3 iron 20 years ago when I left it accidentally on the course. :-)
I used to love carrying my 3i and 4i… then stopped hitting as many balls and went hybrid. I love my 5i, but my set is also 20+ years old so it wouldn’t surprise me if that’s a 7 today. Sometimes I just love chipping that longer iron just to get up the hole 150yds or so. This is such great advice Coach. Always appreciate you bruh!
Today's 4 iron is the same club mainly as my old 2 iron from 30 years ago. I bought a new set of Mizuno JPXs several years ago and longest iron is a 6 🤣 I am old now and love my hybrids and fairway woods. Thanks coach! Good stuff!
At age 67 I have lost the skill to hit any iron above my 5 iron. Most of the time my 5 and 7 irons travel the same distance but the trajectory is higher on the 7. I play the same two courses regularly, so I have found that a putter, 56, and 9,7,5 irons are all I need. I tried a hybrid and it just didn't work for me so I added a used 7 wood to go with my driver. Sometimes when the driver is misbehaving, I will tee off with the 7 wood. Usually after the 3rd hole, my drive will be ready to play and the 7 wood will wait its turn on the par 5s.
Demo'd a few hybrids over the years but i just can't hit them..I prefer hitting long irons but use a 5wood for those 235-240 shots that I want to land softly..I would replace the old 2 iron i had before it got nicked out my bag but i can't find any with a narrow sole and doesn't cost a fortune.
6 iron is the longest iron in my bag, the i have hybrids instead of 5-4 irons, wedge play is key to low rounds when the speed slowly fades out - aging :). Practice your wedge play, then it doesn't matter if you didn't hit the green, you simply use your well trained wedge play and put the ball into a radius of 90cm from the cup and putt it in.....too many club players use too little time on the short game area :)
I have never felt comfortable with hybrids, so with my 6 - 9 irons, I have 5 wood, 7 wood, and 9 wood. Seems to work ok with my senior swing speed.
Lack of practice, smaller sweet spot, lack of confidence >>>> all why long irons are hard.
No longer carry a 3 iron, simply because it didn't come with the set, but my 4 is pretty much 3 iron loft anyway ... carry a 2 which is primarily my safety shot off the tee when a driver isn't an option. I've tried a hybrid but never got on with it, flip it left every time!
I have two Hybrids 17 & 23 degree I struggle to hit down is it a speed issue. No problems with my mid irons feel fairly competent ish
I keep my 4 iron as more of a trainer and will put it in the bag if I am hitting it well. Mentally, I feel if I can hit the 4-iron, the 5 is no problem. However, if my 5 is the longest club it kind of defaults to being the hardest club to hit.
The title suggests tips on hitting long irons. The video suggests blending in fairway woods and hybrids? Perhaps a more suitable title.
my 3 5 and 9 wood are all the same length. i have a 4h as well. 6-pw. got rid of the 5. for me the dispersion left and right at a green means trouble, rather hit a 6 short and chip from the short grass instead of rough/bunker pin high.
I play all hybrids, my lowest lofted iron is a 43* nine iron. I can shoot mid 70's.
3i Wilson fg100 tour blade favourite club in the bag 😝
The biggest problem is the lie of the ball, like you hitting of a flat surface is easier, dont see you hitting off a little rough uneven surface, thats the reason i use hybrids and not long irons and are more successful, if i had the perfect lie like you did then i would use an iron more often but thats just my opinion, cheers
Speed has been proven to be my issue.....I now only have hybrids in place of long irons.
Long irons and amateurs? What about your mate Mark Crossfield who only goes to a 6i.
Lack of accuracy plus poor stopping on green makes my long irons good only for 2nd shot on par 5.
I guess im lucky...I can hit my 4 around 205-210
even for higher speed players, this can be true! on a good day, I get my 4i up around 101, 102mph on trackman, which is plenty of speed, but it is less accurate than my 7w, which replaced my 3i. I'm leaning toward adding a 9w; I've just never entirely gotten on with hybrids. To be clear, by 4i is fairly weak lofted, so it it probably more like most golfers' 5i.
Good stuff!
I stop my irons at 6 then have 2 hybrids and 2 woods
Hi coach, its been a long winter down the driving range but now with my new clubs ( Ping 430 driver and 5- pw irons) I've been fitted for a ping 430 hybrid plus vokey wedges which will be here by the weekend. I'm ready to hit the golf course next week so just wanted to thank you for all the instructions I've received over the winter. 27 years since i last played golf and can't wait. Cheers
Love my 430 hybrid. Enjoy it!
How to hit your long irons better? "Replace it with a hybrid" really? Here I was hoping to get some good hints with longer irons.. 🤔
Maybe I’ll do that next time 👍👍
I don't struggle with my long irons at all, what are you going on about lol
Good for you, but you don't need to be a twat about it
So, here’s how to hit your long irons better … get a hybrid.
Correct 👍
A 5 wood, 4 hybrid and 5 iron
Percentages of greens hit from a further distance away will always be less regardless of the club you use. A 1 degree miss off the club will result in a bigger miss the further you play it out
Parked my ego last Nov and bought a set of Cleveland Launcher XL Halo hybrid irons (4-PW) with graphite shafts.
They're ugly as sin, but they get the job done!
My irons stop at a 6 iron. Then the fairway woods. I keep a 3 iron only for recovery shots under tree branches to get back on the fairway.
7 wood and 9 wood instead
I'm a weird golfer... mid handicap. I can't hit hybrid clubs at all... I actually hit long irons way better. 3-9
7-wood fan here. Also carry a 23-degree rescue and a 4-wood. Longest club I carry is a 5-iron only to use for punching out from under a tree, for example. Hit 6-iron randomly then everything above that works great for me.
High handicap here (20) but I actually generally strike my longer irons (5-3) better than my shorter irons (w-7). My gut feeling is that it has to do with my height (6’3”). My irons are 1/2” over standard and +1 upright but I still feel like I really have to reach to get the shorter clubs to the ball. Any thoughts on that?
7-9 i, 23d/20d hybrids, 7 wood. thanks coach !
Nice work!
Tell that to a young Mark Crossfield - with his 2 iron.
And I am sure with bigger legs, you too Coach can hit it 375 yards.
I have 2 Callaway Apex utility woods 21 and 17 degrees, then 4 iron down and 3 wood and driver. I find this works for me.
1 hydrid in my bag, a 4. I added last year. I used to love my 4 iron but when I got new irons the 4 just never felt right. Now thinking about a 5 hybrid. My gaps from 6 to 5 to 4 hybrid isn't what I want. In part because the 4 hybrid is flying further.
I hit my long irons better than I strike my short irons. Handicap doesn’t play a role on ball striking. Swing speed doesn’t really matter either.
Good call Coach. Slower swing speed, short hitter, older guy - all of the above.. That’s why I love my 4 and 5 hybrids (XXIO). Haven’t tried the utility irons that someone else mentioned. Thoughts?
I feel its a combination of reasons, we don't hit them often, the blade is less lofted, and longer we have to adjust ball position and then the mental nervousness...the lowest iron I carry is a 5 and my Hybrid has been fantastic replacing the 3/4...
You were always such a tremendous long iron hitter, and Mark went to Hybrids before you, but I believe you are now using Hybrids now too.
I play off 8 and can’t hit long irons due to lack of technique.my irons go to 6 iron but I do own a tsr4 hybrid, if it wasn’t that little wond I’d be playing off 18 or more
I keep my 4 iron in the bag,a couple of the places we play have a long par 3.. 4 iron seems more accurate for me off a tee, long par 4 definitely going hybrid. Good lesson Coach!! Cheers!! Do I sense a coarse vlog coming soon?
Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 9 wood, 5-PW, 47, 52, 58 for me
I'm close to the same setup. D, 5W, 19* hybrid, 9W, 5i - PW, 56*, 60* and room for one more club as that is only 13 clubs with a putter. I'm looking at adding a gap wedge about 52*.
Unrelated Lockey but my stand bag's just packed it in - any recommendations?
Great advice yet again coach, I started with a PXG 3 hybrid, now have 2h, 5h,,6h searching for a 4h to finish, irons for the rest of the bag.
I switch between a driving iron and a hybrid depending on course I am playing, I also tend to draw the hybrid and fade the driving iron, they are interchangeable in my bag.
I’ve not got a slow swing but I Made this change a few months back and it’s made a huge difference. Stop at a 5 iron now then 5 and 4. hybrids which are light years easier for me than the longer irons ever were. I’ve now got confidence at those distances which I never had with an iron.
Uhh.... what is the secret to hitting them!? 🙄
Still hitting down with speed
Usually hit them somewhat consistently but not always on target
Great video. I have many friends who have replaced their long irons with hybrids and they hit them fantastically. People should get out to get their swings analyzed for the exact reasons you cite. I've never tried hybrids and really don't intend to because, out of pure luck, the golf gods have made long irons the clubs I hit the best. Several of the best shots I've ever hit were consistently with my 2i. I'm just getting back into golf again after being sidelined a few years because of surgery and am getting close to hitting the course again. My immediate thought before the first time back at the range was that my new condition would make my long irons harder to hit but thankfully not. I can't wait to get back out there.
I grew up playing bladed irons, so 3-4 irons fell way more comfortable for me than Hybrids. I tried switching to hybrids 5 years ago and struggled getting use to them, I now have switched back to long irons ( I'm 63 yrs old ,example I carry my 4 iron 195)
Yes same here, I always feel the accuracy of the Hybrid is worse than my irons. (I'm 58 and still can't hit the hybrid 4 anywhere near as well as my ZU85 4 iron)
72 years old. 13 handicap. Have no trouble with my 4 iron. It's that damn 3 wood on the fairway that sabotages me. Sometimes hit it like a pro, sometimes like a beginner.
Can't sweep the fairway woods. Nor the driver off the deck. Have you tried that before? I figure if you can slap the DOD, the rest of the clubs should be slightly easier to strike cleanly. Fairway woods must strike ball first and compress the ball down prior to contacting the turf with the through swing.
@@JayOsh99 Hi. I do occasionally use the driver off the deck when trapped inside a forest of trees. Never hit it very far. And often hook the ball. Should practice that shot. I have a 79 year old friend who hits DOD 250 yards. Impressive.
Are the titles of these videos for the benefit of the algorithm? The negative emphasis is just poor imo. The whole “why are amateurs crap” UA-cam videos are a turn off for me. “How to get better with your long irons” would be better.
Then don't watch.
That's stuff for another ... and different ... video.
Turn off then
You observe can’t hit a long iron bruh. Bore off
Think about it. Content is being made to get views. What search would produce more views? “Why can’t I hit my long irons” or “How can I get better with my long irons?” You create titles that will pop up with the most likely search.
I go all the way up to 3 iron in blades. Tried hybrids and cavity backs, but for whatever reason, I hit the blades better.
